Reading is an amazing activity that can transport you to various worlds and eras. I can recall being asked many times to put down the book I was reading and pay attention to class or losing sleep to finish the next chapter. While it certainly helps to be able to pronounce and understand what you are reading, I believe that the most important thing a good reader needs is curiosity. It can be easy to lose yourself in a book you are curious about if can catch your attention. A lot of readers hear about a book and decide to explore it or simply find the summary interesting and being to read. Encouraging that curiosity is my goal as a teacher. I want my children to have an insatiable curiosity for the world around them. My own passion for reading will help me get my students encouraged about the next book or topic. Children can feel how people are towards different subject areas and reading is one of my favorite so I feel that I will be able to pass that excitement on. I was nervous that my reading would have fallen behind since I cannot read as often for pleasure as I would like, but I was pleasantly surprised. What did disappoint me was that I missed more vocabulary questions than comprehension questions. In middle school I prided myself on my vocabulary and to a degree I still do. I was hoping to have a better score on vocabulary because I feel that I read more than a lot of people. However, I am proud that I was able to correctly answer sixty-nine of the questions because some of the words I have not come across in a long time. The words that I did not answer correctly were words that I have never come across before. Overall, I feel that I did very well and I attribute my vocabulary knowledge to my love of reading. My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
In the essay titled “How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading” written by John Holt and published in Reading for writers in 2013, Mr. Holt discusses why most children aren’t interested in reading. Mr. Holt spent fourteen years as an elementary school teacher. He believed classroom activities destroy a student’s learning ability. Mr. Holt never let his students say what they thought about a book. He wanted his students to look up every word they didn’t know. People can learn difficult words without looking them up in the dictionary.
If you had the choice between your phone and a book,you would probably without thinking grab your phone. But what if you knew that reading is crucial to a future. In “Reading for pleasure Is in Painful Decline” by Stephen L. Carter and “Twilight of the books” by Caleb Crain, both authors argue about the state of reading in The United States. Within both passages they give valid points as to why and how the state of reading are negatively affecting the country. Stephen L. Carter represents how the decline in reading for fun is the main concern, while on the other hand, Caleb Crain shows it’s technology and social media that actually are the main contributors.
When I first got out of school, I had time to read. But as I got older the more I worked and the harder it got for me to get into a good book. When I did find a book I could get into I had a hard time with the bigger words, from reading to understanding them. Over time I got a little better at understanding and using the words around them to figure out what they meant. I still have those obstacles, but I am working through them to better my reading.
Spurring from a growing concern over the literacy requirements of students in a Middle school science class, Holli Eddins Forrest in “Using Literacy to Engage Adolescents in Science,” asserts that it is not literacy that causes students to “hate science,” but the way in which information is presented. In the article, Forrest aims to analyze motivation and engagement of Middle school children in a Science class, to determine the root of the problem and highlights ways in which educators can cultivate the necessary literacy skills required to keeps students motivated and engaged.
Literacy, the ability to read and write, also arguably one of the most important skills to have. Reading and writing, also one of my least favorite topics I have had the pleasure of studying in my educational career. Starting young, just entering grade school, it was sheer enjoyment being read stories, one of my favorites, Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, entering worlds of excitement with pirates and adventure, and drifting off to sleep to the voice of my mother. Throughout this year, I have read many different works of early English literature. From reading these works and following the rules of Vladimir Nabokov, I have grown tremendously as a reader since the beginning of this year. From reading Alice in Wonderland to now, I have grown to appreciate literature much more. I have developed a better sense of the English language through the use of a dictionary and the difficult sentence structure of works such as the Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, Le Morte D’Arthur, and the Fairie Queene. Because of the difficult sentence structures, the different word usages, and the deeper meanings wrapped in each of these works, I have learned to reread to better my understanding of the text and to see if I missed anything the first or second time through. I have also learned to not only read a novel or poem just for its story but to look deeper into it while considering its context and purpose. By following Nabokov’s simple rules, I have become a better reader and re-reader.
Mason Cooley says about reading “Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are .” Reading is like a journey you can take when you want to go somewhere. Everyone always wants to imagine they are in the journey with the character in the book. When the story is over the person that is reading never wants to leave the journey. Everyone starts a new journey when they open a new book to read. Sometimes people who read don’t have a journey with the character; they just want to read because they don’t have anything else to do. For me reading is really fun to do.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
My relationship with books and reading has not been the greatest adventure for me thus far. I will not say that all my experience has been terrible but for the most part not that great. I know for me it started when I was little and unfortunately it has carried to my adulthood.
Reading was never something I fussed about growing up. As a child, I loved genres of realistic fiction. I was hooked on The New Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley, Goosebumps, The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes, Judy Moody, and especially, Zoobooks and Highlights magazines. My mother was always ready to help build my reading and writing skills. She took me to the library constantly to feed my passion for books and knowledge. I loved exploring the shelfs, organizing the books, and filling up my library cart. I tried keeping a diary in elementary school to keep track of my outings with my parents and grandparents to museums, zoos, movies, and libraries. There have not been many obstacles that have gotten in my way for me to be a successful reader. I am able to confidently read "Hope in the Unseen" because it keeps my interest. I like the story. I feel for Cedric. I imagine and picture the story in my mind. When a large amount of reading is assigned, sometimes my brain gets exhausted and I have to take a break. Literally my brain gets tired. The reason why I have trouble getting all of my assignments in for "Writing and Being" is because the book does not hold my interest. I find it boring at times. I really like "Higher Learning" because the stories are like short stories, and they are adventurous in a weird way.
Reading aloud helps a child’s memory, curiosity, and it builds their motivation (“Importance of Reading Aloud”). “Reading aloud introduces the language of books which differs from language heard in daily conversation, on television, and in movies. Book language is more descriptive and uses more formal grammatical structures”. Children learn many things while being read to. The more books that are read to children, the more their vocabulary expands. Reading to children can introduce them to different literature they might not find on their own (Koralek). Another essential skill that children need is the ability to listen, which they learn while being read to (“Importance of Reading Aloud”). Not only does reading give children the ability to listen, it gives them the ability to understand how stories work. “The more a child knows about and experience the joys of reading before kindergarten, the easier it will be to learn to read,” (“Why Reading to Children Is Important”). Reading is fun and the more it is done, the more children will enjoy it
When I was younger, I didn’t like reading much at all. I always questioned my teachers what was the purpose of reading; I never got an answer from either teacher until I was in the seventh grade. Starting junior high school was different from elementary. In seventh grade, we were in our reading class for two hours a day. I asked the teachers why didn’t we have the privilege to stay in our other classes for two hours; I never received an answer from my teachers.
