My Musical Autobiography
Awnon K Bhowmik
Nothing lasts forever. Everything, whether good or bad has to come to an end. But people do say that sounds and voices do not die. Melodies we hear in our life lives on for generations and ever after. No matter who we are or wherever we come from; in whichever situation we were in, at some point of our lives, we have come across certain melodies that still live in our heart. And I am no different from others. There are certain musical pieces that have not only influenced my life, but have made a significant impact to change me for the better.
I was brought up in a Bengali Hindu family with strong religious beliefs. The social infrastructure around me was a bit too strong, enriched with all sorts of beliefs and many methods of worship. Whether it was a song from veneration, whether it was a rhyme at my school, or whether it was certain musical pieces sung by my mom, I was always surrounded by some

I never had a liking for heavy metal, rock or rap. Although in the institution I study in, I made many friends who had a liking for those. I never had a conversation about music with them because I liked classical music, usually solo. My parents have different tastes in musicwhich came out in the 80s and 90s.
As I said, when I was young, I used to enjoy music from the cartoons that I saw. Some of the favorites are the intro of Tom and Jerry, intro of The Mask, music from the Disney movie Aladdin. “A Whole New World” is one of my all-time favorite songs. But I remember when I was 12 years old; one of my friends introduced me into one of the greatest songs of all time. The song was “Earth Song” composed by Michael Jackson, who was one of the best musical artists of the 21st century. I do not know what that song did to the childish brain of mine, but my perspectives towards the world changed by a
I grew up exposed to various types of music, whether it was my dad blasting Smashing Pumpkins in the basement, or my Mom listening to Linkin Park or classical music while she drove me to school. During a typical day, my sister playing all sorts of rap music as she slowly discovered artists such as
In the summer of 1998 my family fled the newly created independent country of Croatia (Former-Yugoslavia) to the United States. My parents came here in hopes of finding a better life as the economy was still recovering from Croatia’s war of independence. We first settled in Amarillo, Texas for a few months. We traveled around the states for a year or so looking for other refugees. After some searching my parents decided to move to Connecticut as it offered the best incentives for refugees. Listening to stories about this time of my life has given me a chance to appreciate the help we received from various government programs that settled us, clothed us, fed us, and helped us become independent American citizens. Now I want to give back and the best way I know to do this is by teaching the future generations of Americans.
Music has always been one of things I excelled in. In elementary school it was required to be in music but second in 5th grade you have the option to be in band. I was in band for 6 years before I stopped and I went to 5 honor bands. I played tenor saxophone and was 2nd chair all six years. Jazz band was something we had in middle school and high school. We had 2 jazz bands in middle school. Jazz one was for 8th graders and jazz two was 7th grade. I played in both. My first year I played tenor 1 and 2 and the second year I played baritone saxophone. My 9th grade year I played only tenor one. We didn’t have to audition but the students who plays that instrument normally would have first say in who gets 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd part. That
This decision had to have been one of the best one I had ever made. My love for music re-appeared and my classical taste began to return, however, it was in the form of pop music. I would use music as my outlet. When I needed to write an essay, I would turn on my music. When I needed to relax, I would turn on music. I never really veered outside of the genera of pop and classical music, though. My mom and sister would try and get me to listen to rock music and I would simply walk out of the room. For me, I do not appreciate any of the musical styles used in rock. I believe that my taste in music is tied to what my mom played for me before I was born. Pop and classical music share so much in common, or at least the songs that I listen to do. I love listening to calming classical or pop music. Currently, my favorite song is Sam Smith’s “Too Good at Goodbyes”. My favorite classical song is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. When I listen to the composition of this symphony, I feel like I should be taking a walk through a forest and to me, it is very

Prior to birth, my mother and my siblings were living in north Nashville. Their interest in music was between R&B and 90s rap. The rap music kind of discussed growing up in a rough neighborhood and it was easily relatable for them because that neighborhood was not the best. My mother was working multiple jobs to take care of her then three kids. As a single mother, music was sort of an outlet that expressed the emotions she was feeling. When she finished her exhaustingly long day she would enjoy listening to some soothing R&B. Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, and SWV were a few of her favorite artists.

Our individual musical likes and dislikes, to a great extent, are defined by the culture we identify with. The reason some people dislike classical music may not be because they dislike the music. It may be because they don't identify with the culture associated with classical music. The same can be said of someone's antipathy to country music or rap music or any other kind of music. Perhaps it is the culture they don't relate to.
Music is one of the most fantastical forms of entertainment. Its history stretches all the way from the primitive polyrhythmic drums in Africa to our modern day pop music we listen to on our phones. It has the ability to amaze us, to capture our attention and leave us in awe. It soothes the hearts of billions, and it is so deeply rooted in my life that it has touched my heart as well. Everyday I walk to the beat of the song stuck in my head and hum along to the melody. For me, to listen to music be lifted into the air by the hands of your imagination and float around for a while. You forget about your worries, your troubles and find peace within the sound. Every chapter in my life is attached with a song. Every time I listen to a certain song, thoughts of my past come flooding back
Not every person is going to have the same taste in music, but why is it that people find a certain genre more appealing than others? A person’s personality and individuality clearly has a large role Research indicates that there is a definite correlation between personality and music preferences (Rentfrow & Gosling p. 1236-1237, Chamorro-Premuzic & Furnham p. 180-183). Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
