The education I have received through Lennox High School and its staff has prepared me in many ways for my future ahead of me. I plan to attend Dakota Wesleyan University, in Mitchell, South Dakota and play golf there as well. I am undecided of a major at this point but hope to be decided soon. I have had many teachers, coaches and administrators aid in who I have become as a person today. My sophomore year we were given the option to mentor at one of our schools during a study hall period that we had. I decided that this was a good opportunity to help out a teacher and learn a lot through the experience. My sophomore year I mentored for fourth and fifth grade special education. I absolutely loved helping the kids out with their school work but also aiding in someone that they could talk to that wasn’t an adult and be comfortable with. By the end of the year I had some great relationships with some of the students that I had worked with and it was an overall life-changing experience. I have mentored individually and also in the second grade classroom since then which has also been a great experience. My individual mentoring experience is one I will never forget. I had the chance to mentor a second grade girl, who has a troubled home life. I would take her out of the classroom every other day for around forty-five minutes for one-on-one time. The time I got to spend with her I tried to help her in every way I could. Whether that be just listening to her tell stories about her weekend or helping her with her homework. One of the possible research topics I plan to undertake involves analyzing the impact that mentoring can have on the graduation success rate of African American males, particularly when the mentor is a Black male and the relationship takes place in the south. In my opinion, these relationships can have a profound impact on a student’s ability to persist towards graduating from college. Though my research, I want to hear the stories of Black males who have benefited from successful mentoring relationships with other Black men. I believe that establishing a strong mentoring relationship with Black males at a young age can greatly improve their chance of academic success. Furthermore, I believe that mentoring is a strong early intervention mechanism to prevent Black males from dropping out of high school and deterring them from pursuing degrees in higher education. At the same time, I would like my research interest to focus on African American males in the south, but I would like my scope to focus on mentoring relationships between black men; both structured and unstructured.
On the subject of this, coaches are the reason players learn, and get better. They are there to help them push them to be the best they can be no matter what it takes. For example, my track coach Mr. Olson, is one of the best guys I know. Not only is he a role model of mine, but he inspires me to become a better runner everyday. At practice he isn’t super pushy to the point where it can be harmful, he’s caring.

Throughout everyone’s life, there are multiple people who leave influences on said person, positive and negative. In my life, my soccer coach, Jason Harrod, has left an enormous impact on me. Not only has he left influences on my life but he always manages to boost my mood just from seeing him in the halls because it gives me flashbacks to the fun soccer seasons I’ve had with him. Coach Harrod was my JV soccer coach during 9th and 10th grade. He has not only taught me standard soccer skills but some life lessons as well. Coach Jason Harrod is a very well-rounded individual and I have no objection to what he has left within my morals.
As easy as it would be to go straight into the details of how athletics and activities have influenced my life, I first need to establish that athletics and activities are my life. While travelling across the East Coast playing softball, attending club meetings and events, and going to volleyball practice, I have learned and experienced more than most would in a mere seventeen years. I have been impacted by phenomenal people, players and coaches alike, who have motivated me to do more, to be better, and to become the person that I need to be. My student inspired me to be a better, stronger teacher, while I inspired him to be a more cooperative and productive student, with fewer outbursts. Helping others and watching how they enjoy learning and how excited someone can get by learning something new is such a great feeling. That was the feeling that I would have when I volunteered to help Mrs. Cheryl and Mrs. Connie with the after-school migrant program for my job shadowing service and senior hours. I had never job shadowed before but it was such a great experience and it taught me more than I thought it would. I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart. My mentor teacher also half way through went through some personal health problems that made her have to sit a lot, this only meant that while students were working on their classroom work that I was able to walk around and observe students as well as answer questions that they have.
