Four years ago I sat on the back patio of my mentors home. It was a cool October night and we were enjoying a nice Imperial Stout, seated next to the fire pit, catching up on life and what the Lord was teaching us. During the conversation I was challenge by a mentor to ask myself, “What is my vision for my professional future?” This came about after several months of obvious disconnect regarding my role as a Project Manager for a small Class A general contracting company. My initial reaction was to respond with a half-hearted, empty excuse, that would greater explain my mentors concern. Yet, I paused, and answered honestly. “I am not sure, but I know it is not the path that I am currently on.” I felt lost and overwhelmed by my current “reality.” …show more content…
Striving to balance healthy rhythms of home, work and school, while along the way being able to hone “personal mastery and proficiency skills” to experience personal and professional growth. Senge states that, “personal mastery goes beyond competence and skills, though it is grounded in competence and skills. It goes beyond spiritual unfolding or opening, although it requires spiritual growth. It means approaching one’s life as a creative work, living life from a creative as opposed to reactive viewpoint” (Senge, p 131). I have begun to realize the “importance of continually clarifying what is important”, and allowing my vision to adjust as I am “continually learning how to see (my) current realities more clearly” (Senge, p 132). Adjustments are vital to success, as barriers are a reality. I have created defined goals with anticipated times of completion for my vision to be “successful,” yet the reality is that variables in life will impact those goals, and if we are unwilling to adjust we will give way to “unrealistic realities.” The choice to spend your Saturday afternoon teaching your 4 year old daughter how to ride a bike, instead of focusing on the school work you are behind on may have an negative impact on your grade, but ultimately help sustain the balance that is needed to see “your vision” to completion. At some point in life most people have allowed at least one challenge to defeat them, if not more. Then there are those people who view these challenges as simply that, a challenge. This was the theme throughout Kyle Maynard’s novel, No Excuses, I learned that it is how we go about conquering these challenges that defines us as people. Throughout his novel he notes things will not always come easily; therefore, it is up to us to dig deep and conquer our goals. By finding alternate routes and adjusting your mindset, we are able to achieve any goal we set our minds to. One of the possible research topics I plan to undertake involves analyzing the impact that mentoring can have on the graduation success rate of African American males, particularly when the mentor is a Black male and the relationship takes place in the south. In my opinion, these relationships can have a profound impact on a student’s ability to persist towards graduating from college. Though my research, I want to hear the stories of Black males who have benefited from successful mentoring relationships with other Black men. I believe that establishing a strong mentoring relationship with Black males at a young age can greatly improve their chance of academic success. Furthermore, I believe that mentoring is a strong early intervention mechanism to prevent Black males from dropping out of high school and deterring them from pursuing degrees in higher education. At the same time, I would like my research interest to focus on African American males in the south, but I would like my scope to focus on mentoring relationships between black men; both structured and unstructured.

Every once in awhile, people are faced with hardships, it’s just a matter of life. However, some of these people may not know how to deal with these obstacles that they are facing. 1. Willingness to share skills, knowledge, and expertise. A good mentor is willing to teach what he/she knows and accept the mentee where they currently are in their professional development. Good mentors can remember what it was like just starting out in the field. The mentor does not take the mentoring relationship lightly and understands that good mentoring requires time and commitment and is willing to continually share information and their ongoing support with the mentee.
The main purpose of participating in an undergraduate research program is to develop skills or experience in a specific discipline or field. Those skills may contribute towards workplace knowledge, or may be generic abilities that can be dispersed throughout the entire professional space. Both are advantageous to the participating student. Learning these abilities somewhat enforces workplace ethics and value into future graduates. URE’s ultimately give EXCEL students an excellent opportunity to learn through mentorship and self-discovery rather than sitting in a class.
A co-worker and yourself have currently been working for a business for three years and you want to train a new employee so your boss has to choose the employee that work the hardest to get to train the new employee. Upon your request for mentoring a new employee I think I display all the characterics such as hard working, dedication, and being a good mentor. First of all, To be a good employee you have to be hard working.
So in life there's always going to be little obstacles that you face. Sometimes you are pulled away from your goals that you want to achieve and you are faced with challenges. These challenges can shape and affect your future. All my life I have had one steady goal set for myself and it is to go to college receive stellar education and take care of my family after my career sets off.
