My Media Life
When I was growing up I was always taught that television was a privilege – one that could be taken away if I neglected other important things in my life. Some of my earliest memories of my mother’s control on my television watching consist of a small basket in which we would “deposit” our TV slips each time we watched a program or a movie. Each week she would give my brother, my sister, and I slips of paper with a certain amount of “time” available for us to watch TV written on them. We had to be careful not to use them all up in the first couple days of the week or else we wouldn’t be able to watch anything else all week. I can’t remember exactly how much time she would give us, but I remember it varying depending on the season (she gave us more time in the summer) and our age (as we got older, the more time we were allowed). My mother’s ingenious idea to establish this system upon us not only controlled how much TV we watched, but also taught us some very early lessons on time management.
My mother wasn’t all that strict though with this system. For example, if we were watching a program with the whole family, such as the newest episode of Home Improvement, Full House, or Rescue 911, she would let us watch for free. If we were watching educational programs then she would let us watch for free. If we were watching a family video on a Friday night, she let us watch for free. And of course, Saturday-morning cartoons were obviously free. As we got older, my mom kind of just let this system fall out of practice. We were outside enough, climbing in the pine trees in our backyard, riding bikes all over the neighborhood, or swimming in our 4.5-foot above-ground pool. She wasn’t worried about us not getting proper exercise outdoors. Television was simply a way to pass the rainy days and afternoons when it was too hot to be outside.

Personal agency can be defined as an individual’s ability to exercise their free will over their thoughts and actions independent of any external influences. Yet, when one takes into consideration that no individual lives in a cultural or social vacuum, the amount of personal agency that an individual possesses is significantly diminished. It is arguable that individuals are irrevocably shaped by social forces and actually possess very little personal agency over their self-determination of their identity. In the context of heteronormative societies that are still prevalent in the world today, the amount of personal agency that heterosexual individuals have in their romantic relationships given the dominance of heteronormative social forces
The purpose of this plan is to create a voice within the LGBT community and project that voice onto the policy makers in Washington. The focus will be on using non-violent direct action to generate the support of the general public. This will help create interest within communities to get involved with the LGBT civil rights movement. Then, the interested members will be specialized into groups that will boost same-sex policies in local government in order to snowball these policies into Washington. To finalize the policies, legal action will be taken in order to emphasize the need for nationwide civil rights for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

As humans, are we allowed to determine our own individuality? If we are, how much of an impact can we make on our own originality? The answer to the first question is yes, however, the answer to the second question is one that has changed over the years due to the advancements of our world. Identity is, in a sense, “an unfolding story…continually recast in the course of experience” (Sennett 175-176). In other words, a person develops their identity through experiences they have in their lifetimes, usually while growing. Nowadays, people have more choice over who they become than they have had in the past. Some examples of this “control” are due to advancements in science and technology, curriculum in education, culture, and what is shown in the media. Because of (but not limited to) these factors, a person has more control but also more influence on the development of their own identity.

In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms in pre-K through high school levels is an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality.
Over these past 5 days I have been asked to not only record, but check my consumption of my media intake. At first I thought “ this assignment seems odd, I certainly don 't use or interact with media 8 hours on average like studies say. There 's no way”. But after these five days I can say without a doubt that my initial observations were way off target. Thought the monitoring and recording process I found that on a daily average I am exposed to about 7 hours of media a day. A number I thought I would be nowhere near at the start of the 5 day process. But by digging deeper and deeper into my actual recordings I found many of the answers to not only why my consumption was so high, but also what forms of media were making it such a high number.

School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
Our generation has been raised in a technological advanced world and there has been definite controversy over many of these innovations that this new culture has brought. An innovation that has troubled the youth of America for many years is television. Although there is no certainty to eliminate this 'plug-in drug,'; there are many ways to control and monitor your television as a parent.
The movie Invictus brings up several key points about the media in everyday life. One of the most prominent points brought up in the film is that sports have the power to bring people together and unite them with a common goal. Sports are an enormous part of the media and cultures all over the world. Whether it be the Super-bowl, World Cup, or Olympics, millions of people continue to unite and cheer for the teams they support. The reason in which sports often unites people is that it gives people something in common with one another. No matter what race, age, or gender, people of all types enjoy watching and supporting sports teams which is why it is such a powerful means to unite people.

From the simplest tools for agricultural use to weapons of mass destruction, the various technologies have made drastic changes that had both negative and positive impacts on the world today. Social Scientists say that the average American watches too much television and plays too many video games. I would agree with this, because in high school that is all I did, but not so much for me anymore. Back when I was in high school that is all I did. Watch television, play Nintendo, hang out with my friends. However, now that I am in college, I have had to change my ways. It helps a lot that I don't have either one of those in my dorms.
