Starting at the age of eight, my love affair with the NFL has been a defining component of my life. In the last five years or so, my love for professional football has been dwindling. This is because the NFL is not as entertaining as it used to be. One of the reasons for the drop in entertainment value is in part to the game-day experience becoming stressful for fans that want to attend the game. In addition to this, the results of games have become very predictable and monotonous. Furthermore, the way that the game of football is now played and regulated in the league has added to this downward spiral in the NFL’s ability to entertain its fans. For fans of the NFL who want to attend a game, the game-day experience has now become more aggravating
than enjoyable. This aggravation stems from the ticket purchasing stage and extends all the way to the end of the game itself. The price of attending a football game has risen significantly over the last ten years. For example, the same seats that my uncle paid $93 dollars for, to watch the Chicago Bears in the 2006-2007 seasons, cost him $140 this year. In stadiums themselves, there is currently a large effort by team owners to make stadiums larger and more technologically sophisticated. A large portion of this emphasis on equipping stadiums with new technology comes in the form of video screens. New stadiums are being built with a lot of TV’s placed throughout the stadium as well as extremely large video screens becoming a centerpiece of the stadium. For example, Jerry Jones, the infamous owner of the Dallas Cowboys, finalized construction of a new stadium in 2009. This stadium houses a screen above the field that is 60 yards wide. Surprisingly enough, there are now three stadiums with video screens larger than the screen in Cowboys Stadium. With such an emphasis placed on video screens, the experience of watching the players in person has become diminished. Currently, the NFL is suffering from an overdose of monotony. This is brought on by the repetitive results in team performances. The same teams are making the playoffs every year and this is making fans less and less interested in the teams they support. In 2002, the NFL rearranged divisions to account for the addition of one team. Teams that win their respective divisions are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. This rearrangement changed the landscape of the league by changing all team matchups. The last 12 years have brought on repetitive results with many of the same teams winning their respective divisions every year. Rivalries, being the only repetitive concept in the league that garnered interest, are now also disappearing. Most rivalries occur between teams that are in the same division, but the NFL puts too much of an emphasis on interdivision play. Every team plays against the other teams in their division twice a season which makes the rivalry less interesting. In terms of team rivalries, the second game that gets played against each interdivision team is redundant. The NFL is also guilty of aiding and abetting this declining entertainment value with the way that they have changed the game of football itself. Tackle football is a contact sport, plain and simple.
Over the past years, many will say that football has become America’s new pastime, taking over our weekends for almost half of the year. Fans travel from all over the country to see their favorite college or professional teams play, and once the football season is over, the countdown clock for the first game of fall begins. There are many positive aspects to the sport, and the fans and players love it, but in John McMurtry’s “Kill ‘em, Crush ‘em, Eat ‘em Raw”, the reader is introduced to a side of football that some have not seen, and many choose to ignore. McMurtry believes that the game of football has become one of people just wanting to hurt other people and too many injuries are occurring to justify the fun
America’s newfound favorite pastime, football, came from a bizarre chain of events. Football started when a soccer player got fed up with just kicking the ball, so he picked up the ball and ran to the goal. His actions of picking up the ball and running with it fathered a new European sport, rugby, which was soon brought over to American shores, and was altered slightly, the shape of the ball and a few other small rules. The sport became organized into a league and produced the NFL(National Football League). The NFL had a slow beginning, but has picked up popularity, currently having a 9 billion dollar yearly revenue. Playing football comes with great costs, including physical and mental health deterioration, plus the amount of time spent prepping before game day. Which can pose several questions, “Why suffer for a game, Is it worth the money? Is it worth the fame? How great is the cost?” I believe that football, should have stricter regulations for the treatment of injuries, along with informing players of just how devastating a concussion can be, along with the other major injuries that commonly occur while playing football.
Football is something as American as apple pie. It is thought of as gritty, physical, and all around fun just as most Americans like to be thought of. For decades the NFL has dominated the world of football. However, Vince McMahon, the founder of the WWF, has introduced a new and controversial professional football league called the XFL. Much of the controversy is about whether the XFL is a force to be reckoned with or just another of McMahon’s clever marketing ploys. Although the XFL’s survival has been questioned by many, it promises to be a league full of the smash-mouth, trash-talking, fan-oriented football every fan deserves.
Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. After their team plays, they will go out and reminisce what happened that Sunday. While thousands of fans are still pumped from the NFL games they watched; small towns across America are getting ready to shut down their shops and restaurants to have the chance to make it to the local high schools football game. Ray Glier, a reporter for the New York Times, writes about football in the small town of Appala...
Specifically, this paper addresses three management interventions that the NFL needs to undertake in order to enter the global market and change from being known only as only a North American league. The three interventions are: (1) create a shared vision; (2) establish a sense of urgency; and three (3) communicate a new image, the shared vision, and the intent to enter new markets. If the NFL is successful in implementing these changes, then it will have positioned itself to be a contender in the worldwide football sporting industry.
Football, specifically NFL football, has become a staple of the annual holiday, something the NFL is keenly aware of.
Football is a game of adversity and emotion. People who have not played a sport or follow one closely don’t understand the emotion behind game. They think that football is just a game, but for those who are involved with the team don’t think so. All those horrendous hours of countless preparation are for something players and coaches love. About a few years ago, a football player at the collegiate level was told that he wouldn’t be able to play another down of football again due to his banged up h...

The National Football League (NFL) has been a staple on Sunday’s in America homes for quiet sometime. It provides excitement and generates billion’s of dollars, but what I told you that this league may lose viewers or even not exist in a few years. The NFL is a great brand, but what is potentially going up against may have you scratching your head as a parent to let your child even take a snap early in his football career if not taken care of.
In the modern day United States the sport American football has become not only entertainment but also a tradition whether it’s watching the BCS college championship or watching the super bowl with the family. The sport of American football is unique to the United States and has grown and became iconic over the years and has become a part of many Americans lives. American Football was made in 1869 and was modeled after the sport of rugby. They took the basics of rugby and changed it to make it fit better for them. The game has changed over the years but it also affected many Americans as the tradition of Monday Night football has begun. The game has had problems with the United States government as it was said to be too dangerous to play, this lead to an upgrade in the equipment and they tried very hard to make the equipment well ensuring player safety throughout the sport.
The roaring of the crowd on November 17 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC finally fell silent late in the fourth quarter after star linebacker Luke Kuechly was slow to get off the field after a huge hit to the head. American’s live to be entertained, and the football field is one of the main sources of enjoyment for many. Immediately after Kuechly’s hit, it was quiet in the stadium for the first time that day. The fans watched in fear, waiting to see if their star player could finish the game and bring out the win. However, they all became disappointed as Kuechly shed tears while being carted off the field, not because they were worried about the player and his head but because they feared about losing the game. Americans want excitement,
On February 7th the 50th anniversary of the NFL Super Bowl was presented with the Carolina Panthers vs. the Denver Broncos, with the final score being 10-24 leaving the Broncos champions of this historic sports event. For all football super fans and Americans in general the Super Bowl is deemed a national holiday of beer, pizza, chips, jerseys and sports fandom. Throughout the four hours of the Super Bowl I paid particular attention of the mannerism, talk, comments and commercials that were presented. Prior to this assignment I viewed the Super Bowl as just a time to hang out and embrace the sport but it is also a very interesting illustration of US culture through the microcosm of sport.
Field study subjects included 408 people from various parts of the midwest. Every subject had participated in watching at least the third quarter of a specific, professional football game. The average age of those chosen for the field study was 40 and 80% w...
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.” -Winston Churchill. I am a wrestler, and love it. My dad was an amazing wrestler when he was in high school, and now I’m trying to work my way up to that. He was a conference champion and went to different countries to wrestle; that says how good I want to be. Wrestling has shaped me into the person I am today, because it is my favorite thing to do, it pushes me to be the best I can, and the people I’m surrounded by when I’m doing it.
