“My Life had Stood a Loaded Gun” by Emily Dickinson is a poem about a gun sitting in the corner. The owner notices him and takes him hunting in the woods. They are walking through the woods enjoying the day and the kill and return home to sleep the night away. The true meaning of the poem is one of a young man that is called up to serve his country and does so without any hesitation. “My Life had stood – a Loaded Gun – In Corners – till a Day The Owner passed – identified – And carried me away –“. Although almost everything Dave did as a seventeen-year-old boy was controlled and monitored by his parents he wanted to prove to them and his surrounding adults that he was a man.
