Ever since my sixth-grade year, I knew I wanted to be on the leadership team. The leadership team was then a goal of mine that I had strived to meet. I’m interested in being on the team because I would like the experience of responsibility by helping on the team. It would be so fun to be more involved with school and the activities provided by it. To be on the leadership team is a goal of mine, like I said before. I am interested because of all of the responsibility and fun planning! I want to be more involved in my school and other things regarding O’Leary. Leadership is something I have much experience with. I am currently the manager of the volleyball team, I help with drills and also participate in some drills. During seventh grade,
I am interested in becoming a Team Captain to have an opportunity to lead the Scarlet Ambassador team in a way that is productive as well as a positive experience for all of the employees. Despite not being a part of over 20 different organizations, as some claim to be, being a part of a smaller number of groups has allowed me to focus on developing my leadership skills more thoroughly than I could otherwise. Involvement in marching band, field hockey, and various other activities has given me many opportunities to show leadership. My first leadership opportunity was in eighth grade when I became a WEB leader. While I was a WEB leader, I helped incoming sixth graders get adjusted to middle school life and find their classes on the first day. I also met up with the sixth graders in my group once a month at lunch and got to know them while I asked how school was going and helped them with any issues they had. In marching band, this past season I was a marching captain for my section. I helped the freshmen learn to march, demonstrated proper marching techniques for others, and gave advice to anyone having trouble with part of our marching show. I would like to become a member of the Presidential Leadership Academy (PLA) because I am determined to be a successful student at Elmhurst College. The program is focused on helping students, like me, who need academic support and guidance. In order to reach my best, I will need the friends, mentors, teachers, and advocates who I would be fortunate to meet in the Academy. The PLA will prepare me to be self-reflective as I continue to become a more thoughtful person. I would be honored to be a Link Crew Leader because it would allow me to practice my leadership skills. I am currently treasurer of the Hispanic Youth Leadership Club here in Turlock High School and am expecting to become president next school year, but, I want to take on more leadership positions in the school to exert my leadership potential. As a person of an official position, I would be capable of guiding freshmen to an enjoyable high school experience.

Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
Leadership to me means helping and motivating others to help them excel in an activity. I would like to become a leader because my Muskoka experience in grade 9 was a great way to make me feel part of the school community. Muskoka helped me meet new people and create many strong and long-lasting friendships. I found that this experience made going to high school a lot easier and a lot less stressful. I feel as a Muskoka leader I would be able to pass on the same experience I had with the new students.
The qualities that make a good leader are as varied as the people that fill leadership roles. Some leaders aren’t overly dynamic but somehow get the best out of people while others appear to be too carefree to take seriously. What is it then that makes leaders who they are? A personal philosophy of leadership is that distinguishing trait that every leader possesses. What those leadership characteristics and behaviors are will be explored in the following text, along with what I believe is the best route for me to follow as I work on developing my own personal philosophy of leadership.
The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. I am no different, which is why writing this philosophy of leadership is going to be a fruitful experience for years to come.
Sometimes you have to wait to get opportunities to lead. First I was a helper and eventually got to be a leader. I have learned that I enjoy working with children and other adoptees. So far I have had only three leadership experiences.
I would be a great section leader for many reasons. I care about the program, I care about the people, and I am responsible. Firstly, I care about the program. I am in the concert, jazz, and marching band. I love all of these programs more than I can say. I have been accepted into New Tech Skill Center which means that I will be gone for three periods a day. Most kids would give up on band and say that it’s impossible to do both with the amount of credits I need to graduate. But I decided to look at it a different way. Band is so important to me that I decided that there had to be a way to do both. I am now taking two independent study courses for english and history because I can’t imagine my life without band. You can trust me that I’m not going to ditch you as soon as things start getting difficult. I will stick it out to the very end and fight through anything I have to for this program.
