Teaching has always been my passion. Growing up, my role model was my Aunt, an elementary school teacher. As a child I spent my summers helping her set up her classroom. The hustle and bustle of the teachers setting up their intricate and perfectly themed classrooms was a rush of excitement that I knew one day I would be doing. One of the most defining moments of my high school education was having the opportunity to act as a “peer counselor” to students my own age and younger who were having academic or personal difficulties throughout the year. This was something that I was proud of and dedicated to. Many of these students suffered from diagnosed cases of ADD, ADHD, Depression and Anxiety. This opened my eyes to the fact that there were different types of students in each classroom. I wondered if these students learned the same way that I did or if they needed some type of specialized education plan. In order to be a special education teacher it is necessary to have the values and characteristics I mentioned in previous paragraphs. It is necessary to be dedicated, not only to the students, but to being the best learner yourself and constantly updating your knowledge of this vast and constantly changing field. I know I have all of these characteristics and many more that will impact my career as a teacher. I look forward to proving to myself and others that these characteristics and values are what is necessary in each and every classroom across the country. My mission statement has not changed. I still feel the way about teaching as I did then. I want students to want to come to school to learn. As my education journey comes closer to the end, I have learned many strategies and techniques to help me accomplish this goal. Teaching can be challenging just a learning can be for students, making it as interesting and fun as possible will ease that in some way. I firmly believe when students have confidence in themselves they will succeed, I want to help build the confidence. I have worked with special education student long enough to see it only takes a like gain to bring a smile to their face. Sometimes climbing one step may seem as if they climbed a mountain, and I want to share in their accomplishments.
As a college student, I often find myself inundated with work. To make it worse, these assignments usually are uninteresting and irrelevant. It is in the midst of these tedious exercises that I begin to wonder whether all of this work is worth it. When this issue creeps into my mind, I think back to my reasons for choosing to pursue this profession. When I started college, I knew that I could not function in a typical nine to five job. The banality and predictability of such a career simply did not appeal to me. So that essentially ruled out any course of study which would lead to such an occupation. I also knew that I wanted a job that would allow me to make a difference in people’s lives. My mind carefully contemplated the list of possible vocations, and ultimately the field of education seemed to possess the strongest appeal. A teaching career, I figured, would allow me to have a strong impact on the lives of young people. I wanted to help them grow both as students and as people, just as my teachers had done for me. So, despite the warnings of many current teachers, I enlisted myself in a curriculum devoted to teacher preparation.
I have always wanted to be a Special Education teacher. I started deciding what I wanted to do in the eighth grade. This was also around the time I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s is an autism spectrum disorder; people with it show difficulties in social interactions, and reading body language. For me, I have trouble making friends and having age appropriate conversations. It is difficult to read people’s emotions, which sometimes gets me into trouble. I have been given the gift to be able to help teach other children with special needs how to ride horses, and also learn about how the horses communicate with these riders differently then a “normal” person. Through working with Ian I have been able to obtain a better understanding of my career goals.
I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. By enrolling in the Masters in counseling program, I aspire to develop methods and experience to become an effective, experienced, and adaptable school counselor that promotes self-awareness, allowing students to realize their full potential and impetus them towards a promising future. I want to learn skills that facilitate personal and career development, ensuring that our students grow accomplishing their goals and ambitions.
Two years ago, I embarked on a journey that would teach me more than I had ever imagined. As a recent college graduate, I was thrilled to finally begin my teaching career in a field I have always held close to my heart. My first two years as a special education teacher presented countless challenges, however, it also brought me great fulfillment and deepened my passion for teaching students with special needs. The experiences I have had both before and after this pivotal point in my life have undoubtedly influenced my desire to further my career in the field of special education.
The students in our classrooms, both special education and general education classrooms, require individualized education to reach their full potential. Each child’s potential is different just as each child’s road to reach it is different. Our job as teachers is to be there for the student’s to help them reach their potential through their own unique way.
I am lucky to have had amazing teachers in my past and members of my family actively involved in the teaching profession at a range of levels from classroom teachers to principal. This had fed my appetite for learning and in turn inspired me to become a teacher myself. Teaching the young minds about the world and all its wonders is, in my opinion, one of the most important things for society, if not the most important and satisfying. I have been a Special Education Para-Educator for eleven years now. My decision to do this was based on the needs of my family and kids. When my last child was born, the doctors did not think that he would make it. He had a heart malfunction and was born with RSV and Von Villibrantds disease (which I did not find out until he was three); those factors lead me to want to work with special education kids, knowing that I could make a difference.
I had been challenge so many times in so many ways no one would understand unless they were in my shoes. I never had anyone say this directly towards me but before I was transfer into the CTT setting I overheard another student saying that “students in special ed are stupid and the only thing they do all day is just watch movies”. I didn’t get mad at all but someone else would have. But beside the negative views from others I knew that there are a lot of positive advantages of being in the special EDUCATION PROGRAM. You get extra services that a student in general education it like for example getting addition time on exams or projects, getting one on one help, having an IEP etc. From my point of view I believe that whether you’re in special education or in General Education we are all learning the same material regardless of the type of education you get. My goal is to become a special education instructor because I was a special education student myself and I would relate very well to my future students. If the children sees me, hear my student and what I went through chances are they would motivate themselves to do exceptional well in order to become something good. I would certainly make it clear to them not to let others say or do anything to make themselves feel a certain way. Early in high school, I considered engineering, sports marketing, and physical therapy. All of these sounded interesting, however, none filled me with the desire I was longing for. My love for learning and helping others to learn as well, whether it’s academics or sports, made me realize that a career in teaching is what I want to pursue after graduation. My mom has been a teacher for many years, and I admire the passion and dedication she has for her students. I want to make a difference in the lives of students and create a desire for learning. The career of a special education teacher is an interesting career, because you get to help children overcome obstacles and become productive citizens. The research will describe the career of a special education teacher, what is required to become a successful special education teacher, and the impact this career has on society.
Education. A word that many people here in the United States take for granted. A word that should be cherished with high regards. Education is the foundation of this country and allows for our society to continually progress. Being an educator is a job that can truly impact every community in America, but it’s a job which requires great training and must be taken seriously.
For over seven years, I've teach for the City of Calgary at the North Mount Pleasant Center and at Indefinite Arts Centre. I educate people with disabilities, art programs for youth, and adults. My personal goal as an educator is to encourage students to develop their abilities through self-expression, independence, working alongside others as compassionate humans, setting and achieving their own personal goals. I have a learning disability myself and this allows me to understand diverse individual needs for students. I want to give students support and make them determined to do their best, more hopeful about their own growth, and confident about what they can accomplish.
As I ponder over my personal professional development experiences as an educator the realization of how one has developed over time is personally satisfying. There are going to be certain ideas that one tries to uphold and other discriminations that one will not allow. Everyone has their own beliefs teachers should do what is necessary not to infringe on others, but show children different way to think so that they have all the information needed to make educated choices. Children are open-minded they have not yet had to deal with or understand the injustices that they will encounter. If children are taught from an early age they will have the ability to succeed especially children with special needs as an educator my main goal is teaching the purpose of public schools, and education reform. There is so much to know about special education that is separate from teaching in a traditional classroom. One thing that has really stood out to me is how many acronyms and terminology these teachers need to know. IEP, LRE, IDEA, FAPE, IFSP, and that is just to name a few (DREDF, 2017). Special education teachers, really need to be knowledgeable about a ton of things. Not only all of the terminology associated with special education, but about disabilities and the best way to go about educating a child with disabilities. When working with children in special education, there will be students of all ages with all kinds of disabilities and different ability levels that you are teaching. It is important to know about each child’s disabilities, what they should be learning and how they should be learning it. There may be times that are challenging education students with disabilities, but when a teacher properly educates themselves on all the aspects of special education and the resources out there for them, it may help make your classroom run more smoothly and easier to
