Looking back on my goals for this clinical day, I would state that I did meet my goals. My overall goal was to become familiar with the clinical setting and the tasks that I would be asked to complete, and I feel that I completely met this goal. As the day progressed, I found myself receiving more exposure to the clinical setting and how to effectively perform skills. Following the concept of safety, I do feel that I met a majority of my goals for safety. During the day, I was able to explore my assigned patient, both by viewing her medical record and by interacting with her directly. This process sanctioned me to acquire the necessary information for my three primary diagnoses, medications, and the start of my concept map. While working with my assigned patient, and other patients on the floor, I remained aware of my surroundings and implemented safety precautions when needed. In the process of patient care and safety precautions, I relied on my therapeutic communication skills to drive my interactions with the CNAs, the nurses, and the patients on the floor. Of my goals set, the only one that I did not completely accomplish was working on all of my beginner skills. Two of the skills I did not get to practice were feeding and bathing/showering. Because I did not receive exposure to these skills today, I plan on making sure I practice these two skills on the next clinical day. Overall, I am pleased with the first clinical day and everything I was permitted to accomplish.

It was intimidating and a bit scary, but instinctively I tried to help the patient and his family in any manner I could. As the day progressed, I had less anxiety when administering medications to the patient, and I felt more at ease with checking on the patient and his family to ensure they had no unmet needs. Because of our initial encounter with the doorway assessment, providing patient care was not as frightening as past first days of clinical have been. This resulted in a quite interesting post clinical conference where every student had something interesting to discuss regarding the patients they cared
As student nurses, I have many goals that would like to achieve upon completion of 150 hours of my capstone course. My plan is to use this opportunity to demonstrate competency skills, and knowledge gained through previous quarters. I have listed seven learning goals that I wanted to achieve during the capstone experience. On my first day of capstone, I have gone over each one with my preceptor and requested from her to provide me with feedbacks, so I can use them as stepping tool to work upon. These goals ranged from critical thinking decision making, culture, growth & development, legal and ethical to clinical competence safety/holistic care, evidence-based practice, and professionalism lifelong learning.

I had a great day at clinical, where I learned and perfected many skills. I really enjoyed working with my primary resident, answering call lights, and meeting potential second resident. Strengths included communicating effectively with staff (objective 2), implementing strategies to promote, maintain and restore health (objective 4), and demonstrating professional behaviors at a beginning level (objective 6). An example of objective 2, was when caring for my primary resident, the first thing I checked was his oxygen tank level and for any redness behind his ear; that could demonstrate irritation from the oxygen tube. I noticed his oxygen was getting low but wasn’t in the red, refill zone. At the end
Critical thinking is the process of examining, analyzing, questioning, and challenging situations, issues, and information of all kinds. Questions are something that must be asked and can be very important when reading a literary work, watching a movie, or just simply trying to understand the habits of people today. Asking questions opens up the human brain to dig farther and deeper into the meaning of why someone did something in a specific way and what purpose it has that something must be done in that way. Critical thinking is asking question and trying to hypothesize on what the answer to that question might be. Critically thinking is a healthy aspect of opening up the brain and will improve one’s thought process on how to apply critical thinking in situations where it is dependent, like a future

My experience in the hospital for my first clinical was very exciting. It brought back the memories I had of when I used to work in the emergency department in high school. Although the unit that I was on is not as fast pace as it was when I worked in the emergency department, I did enjoy the environment. The first time I walked into my patient’s room to care for them, I was a little worried that my patient would deny me to be there nurse and ask for someone who was not a student or someone with more experience.
