September 5, 2017, was my first phone call my mentor who is Audrey Caldwell. In our first phone call, we introduced ourselves and then discussed what the mentor program entails. I had asked Audrey where she works and where she lives and learned that she lives in San Francisco. She had mentioned that her first job was in Texas after she graduated from the University of Arizona and she explained that she did not enjoy her job, which is why she transferred to a different job in San Francisco. Audrey had mentioned that buying can be perceived as fun because of the decision making that is done but she also said that being a buyer involves a lot of analytics. I had also discussed with my mentor that my short-term goals are getting more involved in the clubs offered through my major. She then mentioned how she was on the student advisory board and explained how being involved helped her gain connections. Audrey, had explained how she got her job through networking and the reason she had chosen that job was to get away from the job she had in Texas, so that she could explore the opportunity of a new job position in a new city. Mentors and mentees each benefit from successful relationships with one another due to the newfound success for the mentee and the the satisfaction reward for the mentor by seeing a person they guided make an achievement. Success from one of these relationships was found in a study conducted during 2015, where 1,139 students from 11 years and above in different school districts served as subjects. In the study, half of the adolescents received mentors while the other half would receive one following the study. After students with a mentor spent time with them, the students were provided with a survey in which students who reported their relationship with their mentor was “close” or “somewhat close” had widespread academic improvement. As a result of the experiment, it is evident that a significant number of students benefit from a mentor being by their side. If the mentee sensed an emotional connection with the mentor, that was all they needed to succeed in school, even though academic-related tasks may not have been on the agenda for the mentors and mentees during their time together
Mrs. Roth chose this career in cosmetology since she was laid off from her job at the school district and was in need of money and a job. Thus, she decided to go to a beauty school for one year. She was only laid off for six months, so she came back to her job at the school district for part time while she finished her schooling.
What direction this new step in life will take is unclear at the moment. Kathy would like to join the executive coaching team of Edward Jones to finish out her working years and gain experience in coaching her peers. She laughs as she says, “This scares me to death. I will have to get a Series 7 and a Series 66 Brokers License to serve as a coach to peers. I started out just wanting to complete my degree now I can’t seem to stop!”
It’s been a long time since the last narrative and a lot has changed. The internship with the dental hygienist failed miserably. After three sessions, my mentor just stopped communicating and cut all ties with me. I attempted to email her multiple times but I remained unheard. So, I had to find a way to troubleshoot and look for another mentor and place to intern at.
Mrs. Hill found her entrepreneurial strengths to be knowledgeable about the products, great customer service and going above and beyond to make the customer happy. Although Stacy is a successful entrepreneur, she enjoyed working under someone else. She says “I did enjoy working for my boss in DC at the time. He gave me total control of the store and I was grateful that he trusted and believed in me.” Stacy’s first boss also allowed her to go on buying trips to pick out clothing for the lady boutique. Stacy was exposed to so many parts of retailing and was front row to see the ins and outs of running a business. Tuesday at 10:00a.m., I interviewed with Dr. Ann Griffith about becoming my research mentor and working in her lab. As a potential mentor, Dr. Griffith seems to be prefect in compatibility. She has a great personality and seems to really understand my concerns and schedule. I may bond better with her because she is a woman and she understands a lot of the struggles women endure every day, especially working mothers. She has several publications, one for instance: “Metabolic Damage and Premature Thymus Aging Causes by Stromal Catalase Deficiency”. This paper really gives good insight into understanding the lab’s interest and where I may possible fit into the balance. In the course of our meeting, I was better able to assess Dr. Griffith as my potential mentor based on these aspects and other informative topics from our discussion that would personally affect me the most.
I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. By enrolling in the Masters in counseling program, I aspire to develop methods and experience to become an effective, experienced, and adaptable school counselor that promotes self-awareness, allowing students to realize their full potential and impetus them towards a promising future. I want to learn skills that facilitate personal and career development, ensuring that our students grow accomplishing their goals and ambitions.

Participant five is a 38-year-old African American registered nurse who works in the Emergency Room. She has two children. She has had four years of college experience, off and on. Her biggest challenge was trying to attend class while struggling with childcare as well as her job. Andria states, “ I was determined to complete my degree because staying in my previous position as a cardiac tech. was like being in stagnant water.” (A. Rose, personal communication, Feb. 22, 2016).
It is my desire to have involvement with students, parents, education professionals, community, and community agencies. As I move forward with learning the role and responsibilities of the professional school counselor, I am reminded of a quote by Carol Allen Simmons, “I want to lend a helping to show someone the way. I want my life to be an example as I go, cause I never pass this way again.” I will lead, learn and grow in the knowledge of this profession because I only have a short time to impact students with direction and care. As I advance on how to educate the whole student; I am attentive, motivated, and conscious of the huge responsible to education all.

For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. In the interview you will see the perspective of Emily’s endeavors after college and insight for future nurses or nursing students.

The Paula Schneider Consulting firm offers strategic consulting in Global Brand Development, creating institutionalized processes for best in class operations, acquisitions, and creating and executing brand strategies (Linkedin). As one can see, Paula has a lot of experience under her belt which explains why she was chosen to fill the American Apparel CEO position.
