My Fear Of Fear

The literal definition of fear states that it is “a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger” (Dictionary.com). It’s something we have all experienced, and always will. It is hard to escape, and it can find you anywhere. It can be small, or it could be overwhelming. Sometimes it even eats you from the inside out with stress. No matter who you are, you’re going to have a fear of something, whatever it may be. Even Indiana Jones, one of the coolest, bravest men in the movies had a fear of snakes. I’ve had my own fearful experiences, such as when I was afraid of touching a fish, my first high school football game, and my childhood fear of high dives. There is a public pool and small waterpark in the town I grew up in. Among the slides and the kiddie pools, there was the diving pool. A 14-foot deep pool is enough to scare a six year old, and if that wasn’t enough, add a 20-foot high dive. That image will spell terror as a child. I always sat down, watching the bigger, braver kids climb up the multiple steps to the diving board, which seemed more like a cliff side to me. I don’t know why, but every time I went to the top, I just couldn’t force myself to jump. I never did end up jumping from that diving board that seemed so scary, but I have jumped from ones just like it. There have even been times I have jumped from higher places. Only I have felt my fear, and no one reading a dictionary definition of the word could understand how it affected me in my personal experiences. There’s a saying that says “It’s the miles that make the man”. I think that’s pretty accurate, because everything we have done, are doing, and will do make up who we are as a person, even if it might have been a little more frightful than we had wanted. Fear isn’t something to hold you back, it’s an opportunity to show out for yourself in a way that you never have before, to prove that you can conquer any obstacle that comes your
