Rollingstone.com
As s fan of music, movies, TV and just about all things pop culture it was hard for me to choose which was my favorite website. In this day and age, any and all information is just a click away. I chose a website that gives me access to all of these things and more, Rollingstone.com. As I subscriber to the magazine since 1997, I remember getting excited when they day came every 2 weeks or so (depending on the US postal service) when a new Rolling Stone magazine would find it's way into my mailbox. I could not wait to read the news and reviews on what was going on the world of music, TV and movies. Now with Rollingstone.com I don't have to wait two weeks anymore, all of the info and more is available with the click of a mouse.
While I will admit that the website has taken some of the fun out of getting the magazine bi-weekly, I can't help myself and check out the site. The homepage is broken up into three columns, the far left consists of the biggest story of the day (today happens to be the Led Zepplin reunion concert) the middle section is broken down into the features on the site and the left gives you a chance to check out stories and photos from the current issue along with more exclusive online pictures that did not appear in the magazine. Scroll down further and you will find shortcuts to sections such as, predictions for the '08 Grammy awards, artists to watch, rock lists, video game reviews, music and movie reviews, music quizzes, more photo galleries, Q and A with people in the news, and much more. The site is updated daily so the layout of which column is where can change but all of this info and more is available on a daily basis.
One of my favorite features of the site is clicking on the "artists" section of the site. From here you can pretty much find out anything you want to know about your favorite band or artist. From the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen to U2 to Jay-Z to Alicia Keys, they are all there. The main page on artists gives an artist of the day (today happens to be U2) followed by the top 20 artists on the site. There truly is something for everyone on this list, Elvis Presley, the Killers, Chris Brown, Josh Grobin, Linkin Park and Frank Sinatra all occupy the list this month.
The members of Black Sabbath got interested in music by listening to music. Geezer Butler and Ozzy Osbourne both got into music because they liked the Beatles. The Beatles inspired them to play music. Bill Ward's mom and dad love music.
Hot Topic was founded in 1989 in Westminster, California as a store specializing in accessories. In 1990, they added rock tees which at the time could only be found in catalogs, small record shops and at concerts (Hot Topic, 2006). By 1994, their assortment of merchandise was 50% apparel and 50% accessories. Hot Topic evolved into a retailer geared towards customers "who are passionate about rock music, pop culture, and music-inspired fashion" (Hot Topic, 2006). Hot Topic operates 748 stores in 50 states and Puerto Rico and was named one of Fortune Magazines best 100 companies to work for in 2006 (Hot Topic, 2006). This organization shows how a specialty retailer that targets young consumers can remain successful despite the rapidly changing nature of pop culture trends.
Rock and Roll, as a music genre, has evolved greatly with each decade; some of this is attributed to technology. One of the biggest leaps forward made for technology and the music genre is the widespread commercial popularity of the television. Since its introduction, television has caused the growing genre to rapidly reach mainstream audiences. Though it is this day hard to pinpoint the full impact of this invention to Rock n’ Roll, it is hard to argue that it didn’t help shape it into the powerful industry that it is today. From the Rockabilly era, to the British Invasion, all the way to the formation of MTV; television has attributed to these eras and changes seen in this genre. The importance of television is very high as it allowed stars to be made and stars to be pushed aside. Television has also allowed even the most remote people to know what the latest stars were doing. It can be said that Rock n’ Roll would not have gained its social acceptance without television to bring it into the lime light and causing it to rapidly reach the youths of the era.
A&F Quarterly was a magazine-catalog hybrid periodical sold by Abercrombie and Fitch from fall 1997 to December 2003. Circulation for the Quarterly averaged one million to 1.2 million during the late 1990s. The publication, released four times a year, featured articles about college life, photo essays by Bruce Weber, and advertisements for the company's clothing. In addition to this, the company's 280-page book included nude young adult models in highly suggestive poses, as well as articles on sex -- elements apparently intended to boost the clothing retailer's brand among college-age customers.
