One class that I hated the most during my time in high school was Spanish. The reason for that is because my teacher and I for some reason did not get along. I always got in trouble in her class even when it wasn’t me, but sometime it was me. It could be one of my classmates talking to me she would call my name instead of that person. She would always call me outside of class asking what’s the problem with you today, and I would say nothing and she would answer back with it must be a reason you are disturbing class. With my Spanish teacher there was always something that I was not during right, and I hated that I felt she always singled me out in the class. The big turning point in this class is when we had to do a family presentation in Spanish, and she said if you had a relative that was taking the class you could do the same presentation. So when the time came do the presentation my little brother who was already taking the class had did the project and completed and received a grade of 100. When it came time for me to present the project she had to told me my brother did a great job let’s see how well you do. He was really just teaching out the book not knowing what he is doing. So we would watch a lot of videos on YouTube were other teacher taught us, and that was really my high school experience in math it was terrible. Often the change and transition to middle is a difficult one for students, so it is no surprise that a student of Juanita’s caliber would be having trouble as well. Her regular middle school teachers were not going above and beyond to make sure Juanita succeed, if anything it seemed as if Juanita was a burden to them. During the time we did this, no one monitored us. So of course, we used our beloved friend Mathway for the vast majority of problems. It showed us how to do the work, so that was helpful since we were, more or less, teaching ourselves. I tried to workout by hand at least two of every different kind of problem on our homework. I pretty much knew how to do anything anyway, the test wouldn’t be that hard. We did this low grade clerical work for two weeks, or what seemed like two years, until our first exam.

Most of the people in her town only made it up to the 6th or 7th grade, because their parents could no longer afford to pay for their education or they had to work to help pay bills at the house. Her parents were a bit more fortunate and managed to pay for her to graduate from “la prepa” (a school to prepare her for the university basically like our high schools here in the U.S). It was my eighth grade year and math teacher wasn’t that superior. And I’m not that bad at math but I couldn’t understand it at all. As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
The thing I remember most was homework! Mr. Ramon believed in lots and lots of homework. I must have spent every night of my four years of high school doing math homework. "Practice, practice, practice, . . ." "Math is not a spectator sport!" However, there was something about Mr. Ramon's explanations that made math easy to understand. Not only that, but his classes were fun. He was lively at the board, cracking corny jokes and telling silly stories. But make no mistake about it, when it came to learning math, for Mr. Ramon, it was serious business. He set high standards for his students, and we met his high standards to the best of our abilities. Most importantly, however, Mr. Ramon was our friend. He always celebrated and shared our success in his classes.
In the end I visited his old school to speak to some of his former teachers in the hope they could provide me with an amusing story to tell. The first person I got hold of was his math’s teacher of five years.
Throughout out this semester, I’ve had the opportunity to gain a better understanding when it comes to teaching Mathematics in the classroom. During the course of this semester, EDEL 440 has showed my classmates and myself the appropriate ways mathematics can be taught in an elementary classroom and how the students in the classroom may retrieve the information. The teachers were giving the students positive reinforcement throughout the day. In class we talked about how positive reinforcement helps the students to succeed in their classes. Another ah-ha moment was the environment of the classroom. The classroom had no windows at all. In class we talked about what kinds of things are distracting to students with ASD in classrooms and one of those things are the windows in classrooms. The third ah-ha moment was the parent sheets that the teacher and the school provide for the parents. In class we talked about how parent involvement is very important for the students with disabilities. The teacher fills out the parent involvement paper that lets the parents know how the child did in school this week and what their child needs to improve on. The students must give their paper to their parents to look at when they get home. The things that I had learned during my observation experience that I will use in the future for my classroom will be including student learning objectives in the classroom, using positive reinforcement, and get the parents more involved in their child’s education. I will go over with the students what the student learning objectives are in the beginning of class so the students will know what they will be doing and what they will be learning throughout the day.
