As a marketing major, a great deal of my academic curriculum revolves around the key theoretical aspects of marketing. However, outside of the classroom I have put these concepts into practice by marketing a student-produced album and my own mixes as a DJ.
I have found that digital marketing is one of the best ways to quickly connect with a large network of people. When I market my DJ mixes, I work with local photographers and graphic designers to organize a visually-appealing photoshoot and cover art. I then engage with potential listeners by announcing the mix on all social media platforms about a week in advance and following up with daily updates. Lastly,

Social media is inarguably one of the most powerful platforms to connect with a wide audience and implement a pervasive advertising campaign. When I promote social events, I make sure to engage my target audience with proper flyers, videos, and endorsements from influential voices in the community. I set up sound equipment for various live music performances and acapella groups. Through this role I have been able to gain a technical understanding of the sound setup for live music performances.

As a consumer, engaging in a global music environment means expanding my tastes past the physical borders or genres around me and appreciating the cultural significance of music from across the world.
As a creator, engaging with a global music environment means exploring new sounds, thinking outside of the box, and using the internet to reach a global audience that spans from my hometown to places like Romania and beyond.

This world is a big place. It is very diverse, in culture, beliefs, traditions, and even music. Music is an important part of this world; not just pop music and what many first world countries are used to, but music of the world as well, such as melodies in Cuba or Africa. These two countries share many characteristics in their music, despite being two very different places. From the melody, to the rhythm, and even the instruments and cultural practices, the countries of Cuba and Africa have both very similar traits in their music.

In this day and age, pop music dominates the airwaves at every turn. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, and many are commonplace names among teenagers and younger demographics not only in the United States, but all around the world. The United States has accepted the position of international, cultural role model long ago, dating back to the 1950’s when rock and roll caught fire as a hybrid of blues, country, and jazz and spread to the rest of the world almost infectiously. Since then, every major artist that comes out of the United States has easily become a global icon, regardless of the language or nationality of their adoring fans. However, one could conceive that this glamorized version of music comes less from the soul of the artist and is merely born of fiscal ambitions and visions of grandeur. The point made previously is not to critique any pop icon’s talent, which clearly they have proved to possess an abundance of it to keep the public swooning at their every whim, but instead, to show that there are musicians out there producing beautiful music without the threat of corruption and adherence to mainstream culture.
World music may sound as simple as its name suggests, however the world music phenomenon expresses a deeper story that many people seem to miss. There is so much that makes up a world music genre, but what we hear about it is not always the easiest to decipher and generally comes from powerful and large organisations, where not all of it is explained thoroughly. A lot of their understanding comes from what they are only interested in and most important stories and factors are either ignored or incomplete (Stokes 2003, p. 297). Not receiving the full picture, gives us a limited understanding of world music and its sub genres. Different genres of music over the globe have been shaped in many ways by influences such as the; historical and traditional root, people and their culture, migration, globalisation, politics and commodification. Nueva Canción is one example of a world music genre that has been influenced in such ways, and of which has a strong historical and political story worthy to be recognised. This essay will focus on the way the genre, Nueva Canción has become a significant genre of world music, by exploring the influences stated previously.
Hip Hop proves to be the voice of the people that may not be able to speak for themselves in conventional ways. Globalization has allowed many people who would not have the means to speak up, to be able to take center stage. Many believe that globalization will be the end of individuality and creativity. This has been a theory that seems to fail when put up against Hip Hop globalization. Hip Hop Globalization has proven to hybridize communities and music,that in the end forms something that has never been seen before. Globalization may prove that instead of making the world “flat”, it will create new mountains and craters of creativity that were never imagined.
In this paper I will be discussing how globalisation has impacted the Music Industry in recent years, and in particular the multi-national giant Universal Music Group (UMG). Globalisation is a noun that is hard to define; it has many definitions depending on which scholar you talk to, which dictionary you reference, and the viewpoint you take. The Oxford dictionary will tell you that globalisation is “the process by which businesses or other organisations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale” (Definition of globalization in English). People’s perspectives on defining the word vary depending on the place they were born, where they have lived, the religion they follow, their social status, political ideology, cultural background and wealth, amongst other things, because all of these will affect whether they view globalisation to be a positive or negative occurrence. My favourite definition comes from Kenichi Ochmae; a Japanese organisational theorist most recognised for introducing Japanese management methods, such as the just-in-time method of production, to the Western world. In 1992, Ochmae said that globalisation is the “onset of the borderless world” (Al-Rodhan, 2006). This is my preferred explanation of globalisation because it is so simple to digest. Music plays a huge role in the structure of a society. It can have both negative and positive influence on cultures and communities. First, musical sounds and instruments can be a dividing factor between the people within the same culture. These opposing social and economic identities within these cultures can lead unnecessary animosity between the members. However, music can also be one of the forces that unite members of a culture and provide a sense pride for everyone. This makes it easier for people to display their identification to that culture.
Music has been many different things to people, an escape, a revolution, an experience, a feeling, a message, a memory, a single moment, peace, class, etc. Music has played a large role in the lives of many. The story of music and it’s evolution is beautiful, from ancient melodies being plucked on a harp, to the british invasion and the popular revolution. Music has changed, and it has effected so much. In the recent decades popular music has manipulated humanity into acting inappropriately.
Social media marketing is a new trend of marketing where different Businesses have taken to social media sites to market and promote old and existing products and brands or create more awareness of their new products. Facebook and Twitter are the two most well known sites where firms market and promote themselves. Over one billion users worldwide use both sites everyday; from averages Joe’s to famous celebrities. Such is the power of each social media site that one post can make or break you.
The influence that music has throughout the world is immeasurable. Music evokes many feelings, surfaces old memories, and creates new ones all while satisfying a sense of human emotion. With the ability to help identify a culture, as well as educate countries about other cultures, music also provides for a sense of knowledge. Music can be a tool for many things: relaxation, stimulation and communication. But at the same time it can also be a tool for resistance: against parents, against police against power. Within the reign of imported culture, cross cultivation and the creation of the so-called global village lies the need to expand horizons to engulf more than just what you see everyday. It is important to note that the role of music in today’s world is a key tool in the process of globalization. However, this does not necessarily provide us with any reasons that would make us believe that music has a homogenizing affect on the world.
Social media is an outlet that allows a company to introduce new products, control the speed of how they want to introduce their products and free advertisement. Sending out a tweet or putting up a status would let your customers know about a product that is released. This benefits companies because they spend less money on televised commercials, which takes more time to produce and will not reach as many generations that it could by using social media. Any social media site is free, and it takes less than 10 seconds to put out a post on any website. Facebook has also launched Facebook advertisements, which assist advertisers by showing advertisements to a user based on demographic factors, such as location, age, or gender, and which can further engage the audience by incorporating social context into advertisements, such as displaying when someone’s friend has liked an advertiser’s Facebook page (Li, Lin, & Chiu, Fall2014) . There is nearly 100 million daily active snapchatters and growing. Teenagers are constantly on their phones checking their pages so there is no way they will not know about the product being released. Marketers can discover potential customers for market positioning by filtering the content that online users mention or discuss (Li, Lin, & Chiu,
