As a graduate student in the field of science and engineering, I am constantly learning, and in the same time, I am also constantly sharing my knowledge to the undergraduate students as a teaching assistant. I have been and will be serving as a TA for my department for all four semesters (2014 Fall-2016 Spring). I have demonstrated my proficiency in teaching in various instances from leading students in laboratory courses to solving queries in theory courses, and my efforts have been recognized by the students in the end-term evaluations. I enjoy and cherish the TA experience I have, and I believe that I will keep contribute as a TA in my Ph.D. study. During my graduate study, I am an active member of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and the local section of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). I participate in the meetings held by these organizations and frequently share my voice in an effort to aid their decision. At the age of 15, during a trip to Australia, in the Great Barrier Reef, I was introduced to scuba diving for the first time. Ever since then, I never cease to participate in scuba diving. For six years, I took part in over 50 dives in 7 different countries and regions, from the seething embrace of the Caribbean Sea, the crystal transparency of the Indian Ocean, to the cold current of the Pacific Ocean. I am currently certificated as a rescue diver which indicates my mastery in underwater emergency response during diving, ability in underwater searching for lost divers, and proficiency in performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on unconscious divers. My enthusiasm towards the ocean is one of the driving force that motivates me to apply for UCSB. What began as tutoring sessions designed for a child to learn how to solve fractions evolved into the moment that forever parallels my revelation to become a doctor. When I first met Abby, she hid behind her mother and struggled to even count. After this disclosure, Abby began talking to me, her grades improved, and she accumulated several friends. I soon realized that the greatest lesson I taught her was not cross multiplication, but the belief that someone understood her and that she mattered. What is the Role of a Teaching Assistant? What does a Teaching Assistant (TA) do? there are many variations to this role, making this not a straight forward question to answer. There are class teaching assistants, Special Educational Needs (SEN) teaching assistants, specialist subject teaching assistants, Higher Level teaching assistants (HLTA’s) to name a few. The job role will differ from school to school as TA’s are present in schools from Early Years classrooms through to senior and upper schools, making the role of a TA an extremely diverse and varied one.
When I was born, my family had just migrated to California from Mexico. In a new country, my father worked in landscaping earning less than $4 dollars an hour, while my mother relied on public transportation to take her newborn child to and from doctor visits. In the land of opportunity, my family struggled to put a roof over our heads. But never discouraged, my parents sought to achieve their goals and worked tirelessly to raise my younger brother and I. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education; this became a major catalyst in my life. My desire to excel academically was not for self-gain, but my way of contributing to my family’s goals and aspirations.

Romer no longer is a offshore diver. He is a offshore manager of a 300 foot construction boat. He can no longer dive because he has neck problems because of the face mask and equipment. Also he can’t dive anymore because he spent so much time on the shore telling other divers’ how to work and complete task safely that he got out of shape and couldn’t dive anymore unless he got back in shape. In his offshore diving career he went to about 360 feet below sea level and he always strived to go deeper. The worst part about being an offshore diver was being away from home and family for so long. Mr. Haul Romer told us he was so glad with the decisions he made out of highschool even though he had no idea what he wanted to be. Mr. Romer loved his job as an offshore diver and wouldn’t change a thing about it other than the time away from home. Although, he loved his job as an offshore diver Mr.Haul Romer loves his job now and is happy with the experiences he experienced as a diver. Haul was an amazing and very interesting guest

Swimming became a favored recreational activity in the US during the 1800’s. The occurrence of drownings intensified as water activity become more common. As many as 9,000 people drowned every year in the early 1900’s(History of Lifeguards). Once the businessmen who opened the pools and resorts realised there was an issue, they inserted lifelines. However, it became evident that these lifelines were insufficient because struggling swimmers weren’t able to clench onto them. For this reason, Duke Kahanamoku established the rescue board in Hawaii. Meanwhile in South Africa, Captain Harry Sheffield constructed the first rescue float. Although these worked for a few years, they were not the best option. A few communities stationed police officers at local water bodies to execute water rescues; However, this took away resources from law enforcement. This led to facilities hiring men and women who were trained particularly in water rescue. These individuals were labeled as lifeguards(History of Lifeguards). Now, when you attend a beach or a pool that is monitored by a USLA afflicted lifeguard, you have a 1 in 18 million chance of drowning(American Lifeguard).

I believe that the most important thing in teaching and learning is to insure the future success of the students. That’s why I am committed to placing the needs of the learner at the centre of everything I do. My teaching goal is to link course performance with the development of general learning skills, general chemical science skills, and specific subject matter skills.
Before recreational or sport divers can take a plunge into the water, they must complete a course in scuba diving and become certified. There are many scuba diving agencies, the largest being PADI, but there are many others, including the National Association of Underwater Instructors and the National Association of Scuba Diving Schools. All agencies require that participants be proficient swimmers, in reasonably good health, and at least 12 years of age. The course usually consists of classroom work, practice in a pool or confined body of water, and dives in open water. In the course, students learn to use diving equipment, to equalize air pressure as they descend, to swim efficiently underwater, to clear the mask if water leaks in, and to ascend safely. Because divers cannot talk to each other underwater, they also learn how to communicate underwater with hand signals. Scuba diving should always be practiced with at least one other person, and partners should remain together throughout the dive. Certification courses teach divers the rules and advantages of the buddy system. Diving partners learn to double-check each other’s equipment, share a single air supply, and assist one another should a problem occur. Neutral Buoyancy is an important skill taught in certification class. Neutral Buoyancy is a state, in which the individual neither sinks nor floats. In this weightless state, a diver conserves energy and air and keeps diving equipment off the bottom where it could be damaged.
My semester as a Teaching Assistant was one of my outstanding accomplishments. This was a new position open for the first time to undergraduates; and the professors’ selection was based on overall performance where I exhibited a prodigious work ethic. The professors felt I was dependable and hardworking since they observed that I paid attention, took notes, asked questions, and satisfactorily completed papers and exams. These actions plus completion of extra credit work such as participating in a study observing red wolves in the wild for a weekend, showed that I excelled to be the best and that I wanted to learn everything they were teaching. A panel of professors reviewed my application with the final decision being made by the incoming professor, who had limited eyesight. The professor could read papers up close, but having a Teaching Assistant enabled her to effectively be the professor. I ensured suitable
It is was a great opportunity to learn and gather new information and wider my variety of future job opportunities by having completed the Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) Snorkelling Certificate. 2. During this unit, I was able to advance in my skill development of snorkelling and knowledge by reflecting on my own learning and personal progress. This was accomplished by, always participating throughout the snorkelling unit, going on majority of snorkelling excursions and partaking in the snorkelling evolution.
What is curriculum and what is my personal experience with curriculum as a student and as an educator? I would define curriculum as the content and material that is to be covered in a particular course as well as the assessment methods and activities used to ensure student learning and progress. As a teacher in NJ, much of the focus of curriculum has shifted to assessment techniques. The idea is to have data that supports student growth in your course now mandated by the state and coined the term student growth objectives or SGO’s. As a student I remember good and bad curriculum in both high school and college. As an educator I have been fortunate enough to write 4 different curriculum guides in various science content areas since 2006 so I have firsthand experience in curriculum writing and revisions. While I understand the basic intricacies of curriculum I hope to gain a much better understanding of how to improve curriculum to create the best possible learning environment and experience for my students with hopes of one day taking a role such as a supervisor or principal.
