As a patient of PDCS, I was given the opportunity to see the involvement of physician assistants', physicians and nursing staff come together to provide the best caring response. I had reached out to a staffing member in order to shadow Physician Assistants. The field of Dermatology is much more vast than I had previously thought. Since February 2017, I have had the opportunity to rotate with three different physician assistants, two who specialize in skin cancer and the other who sees patients for general dermatology. In over the 35 hours of clinical exposure, I have observed physicians and the physician assistants during consults and was able to scrub in on surgery procedures. Standing at the starting line of the full marathon I felt anxious and nervous. Not only was I excited to accomplish this goal, but also I was nervous about the difficulty of this task. However, when I crossed the finish line and accomplished this goal, I realized that a new and possibly more difficult goal was about to start. This goal was not only to complete Physician Assistant School but it was to strive to excel in a career as a Physician Assistant in a rural primary care setting. Driven by my intrinsic personal traits of leadership, compassion, and commitment, I am motivated to achieve this goal of excelling in my career as a Physician Assistant.
When we see patients, we must remember that we are not simply treating a disease. We are caring for people with lives, hobbies, jobs, families, and friends, who are likely in a very vulnerable position. Where you live should not determine whether you live, and the PA profession was created to improve the availability of healthcare in rural and other underserved areas. As a PA, I would be eager to help people have not had access to the care they needed. I want to serve those that need medical attention but don’t have the means to obtain it—whether in rural Michigan, the inner-city of Atlanta, or the backwoods of Arkansas. For this exam you must be eligible to take it before applying. The medical assistant must be graduated from or about to graduate from a medical assisting program who is accredited by the CAAHEP or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs. Or they could even be accredited by ABHES which stands for Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. Those students who apply for the exam within 12 months of graduation are referred as recent graduates and should probably take the test soon after graduation because that is when the knowledge is still fresh and your practical skills are more active. Completing students may take the exam no more than 30 days before completing their formal education and practicum. When I was younger, I always imagined having a job helping others in the medical profession. My favorite quote is by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which states," The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." This is perfect to me because I hope to live my life this way. I would always think about what my future would look like, because I always try to plan ahead. High school was the time in my life when I started to process what I really wanted to do as my future career. I have many dreams and aspirations for my life, all of which begin with me going to college. I want to become a physician assistant, and in order to do so I must first get a bachelor's degree in biology and then continue on to graduate school. With a total of six years of college ahead of me I know that paying for college will be a burden. As the youngest of eleven children, with my dad working as a janitor at a small catholic school, and my mom staying at home, my parents are not able to offer much financial support. Also considering the demanding schedule I will have in college, I want to make sure to focus on my academics, so playing sports in hope of scholarship money is also not a feasible option for me.
