The United States is a country where everyone dreams of coming. It is the "land of opportunities", as they say. The first time when one leaves the home country, there is a feeling of excitement, hope, and sadness with lots of worries and questions in mind. The thought that life will be a lot better than what was before, is only a hope. Life is only starting from the very beginning with no experience. You will be born again and start to learn how to walk. You will go through tough times at first. You will fall and get up and learn from your mistakes. You will get lonely. After going through all that, adaptation will be the only option. Time is the key here and in time people move on with their lives. Knows that the only way to survive on another …show more content…
I was no longer that girl from a small town but actually a New Yorker. I spent more time in the city during my high school years and then applied and got into New York Institute of Technology to study my passion, architecture. To be an architect was my dream since I was nine years old. I was here in this city to have my dream come true and I took the first step by getting into school. In my second year at NYIT, I had to take a Visualizations III class where we learned a new software called 3dsMax. It was very interesting because I was going to learn how to control and animate my design. As my project, I had to re-design a facade of an existing tower in the city and I was given the Bank of America Tower on the corner by Bryant Park. This park was our meeting spot with anyone. I meet my parents, friends or anyone who comes to visit the city we bring them to Bryant Park first. The park has a great location, close to most used transportation hubs like Port Authority. They have activities on the lawn area most of the time and seasonal activities like film nights to ice skating. It is beautiful during the summer and winter. Going back to my design work on BoA tower, I picked to study pigeons and their behavior around tall towers like BoA tower. I wanted to design a skin where it will not affect birds who migrate or live in the city on a daily basis. Everyone laughed at this but my professors were very supportive and knew I was going …show more content…
It is my favorite season and holiday of the year and it is best experienced in New York City. Back in my country, Turkey, we don 't celebrate Christmas but we do decorate the streets and our homes during New Year, but Christmas has a whole lot different feeling. Before I got to college, my dad used to drive us around towns in New Jersey during Christmas time and we would choose the best-decorated town or a home. In Jersey, some people go to the extremes of decorating their houses and you would only see a house that is made of lights. These lights would warm up the cold weather outside. It symbolized unity, family, and love. I always feel like everyone forgives each other at this time of the year, they call each other if they have not for a long time and sends each other cards and gives each other gifts. There is more to Christmas just decorations and gifts of course. The religious belief and the story of Jesus Christ should not be forgotten. Unfortunately, I also believe that this day was taken advantage of to boost up the economy. But on the other hand, it brings people together and closer. I like to walk by Rockefeller Center on Christmas day, not just because the big Christmas tree is there, but because the light shows and store window decorations take me back in time and make me feel like a kid on a wonderland. It is like
Have you imagined leaving your homeland behind and settling in a different country? As a kid I always enjoyed the idea of traveling the world, and discovering new things, but never had thought it would be very hard to let go everything and leave. Growing up, I was always eager to meet new people, learn new languages, and make my own adventures in life. Soon, that dream turned into reality when my family decided to move to the United States of America in hopes of having a better future and new opportunities. I had mixed feelings and was confused about what to expect in the future. However, this was the biggest fear I have ever faced in my life. It was difficult to get adjusted to a new culture challenging because change brings the unknown and unfamiliar with it.
The American Dream. What is it exactly? Well, it is the ideal that every U.S. citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. However, can everyone really achieve it? Yes, anyone can achieve the American Dream with enough hard work and dedication to pursue a good life. In order to maintain the American Dream there are some important ways to achieve it. Such as: a strong work ethic, a good education, and being determined.
People usually do not have a concrete plan for their future, so they do not know what direction they are going to take; it is so difficult for people to set themselves up for success when they have no real support system put in place. They often have negative people around them that will bring them down, too, which will lead to a lack of motivation, and this will set them up for failure, especially when they set goals that are not clear enough or realistic. People are usually not motivated or disciplined enough, use too many excuses, and get overwhelmed by obstacles, causing them to fail.
In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck shows American dream as an unreachable goal for the characters. Of Mice and Men is a novel based on two childhood friends, Lennie and George, who travel together in search of work. Lennie, the gentle giant, has a mental disability and an obsession of petting soft objects. One day, while stroking a girl’s hair, Lennie accidently kills her. And eventually by the end of the novel, George is forced to shoot Lennie. Steinbeck shows American Dream as an unreachable goal because of a character’s standing in the society, their dreams to be unreal and their dependency on other characters.
There are many challenges that one must face as we go through life. I have faced a few myself, however, none proved more challenging than moving from my country; Jamaica, to the United States and subsequently moving to the state of Wisconsin. Deciding to leave behind family and friends is the hardest decision to make, however, there are a few things that I was not prepared for that made the transition more challenging than expected. Moving away from all that is familiar culturally, socially and economically can be even more of a daunting task than imagined. There are things that are taught to us by our parents and others that are more dictated by our environment than anything else, so when I immigrated to the United States I had three major challenges to overcome.
Many other countries can change too but America has proven to be able to adapt under any circumstances. When 9/11 hit America was devastated but then came together to help everyone and make sure everyone was okay. People adapted accordingly and many businesses adapted to try to stop something like that ever happening. When the United States voted Barack Obama into office as the first African American president some people did not know how to handle it but then they soon adapted and warmed up to the fact that things change. This is a good thing for foreigners because they will be able to come and stay somewhere and the people around them will accept it and adapt to them being there. They will see that people are able to take change and adapt to it in the best way that they
Everyone grows up with the thought of an American dream in mind . Unfortunately that American dream is only limited to the people who are not of color. Sadly the people of color and the american dream don 't match up to well. I feel that this is because it can’t be easily obtained due to improper education and never being given the opportunity to show what they’re made of. Maybe if we weren 't categorized by our living arrangements, or the amount of our wealth, or better yet being presumed as these incompetent animals who aren’t good for nothing. Then we too would be able to achieve our own american dreams ,but as people of color the chances of that are not likely living in a world that feeds us with this improper mindset.
Nobody really likes moving. At least I know, I don 't. Moving to another place you have no idea about is tough. When I was 14, my father petitioned my family to move to the United States. Upon hearing that news from my mother, I was devastated. Devastated that I have to leave the place that I grew up, leaving all my friends and family. I have to travel 10,000 miles across the glove to live in a place I have never been to. I have very little idea about United States before moving, I have only seen this place through screen, watched movies such as "High School Musical." From what I have heard and seen life seemed so much easier and happier in the US, but once I stepped out of the plane, I knew it would not be even close to what I have pictured in my mind.
Coming to a foreign country is a daunting experience. When I first moved to America, I had to leave everything behind such as, - my family, friends, and life back home. Although I welcomed the change, I was also afraid. This fear hovered over me for a long time before I had the courage to let it go. My experiences, both good and bad, allowed me to break out of my shell, become a leader for my family, and strive against all the odds to achieve my goals.
It was the summer of 1944 a year that would change my life. The dream I was having was abruptly interrupted by the loud voice of my mom yelling “Amante wake up!” Today was the day we were moving from Venice Italy to the great city of New York. There had been many bombing throughout Italy and we decided to pack up and live the American dream. I had been waiting for this day for years I had seen pictures and heard about America’s beauty but I couldn’t wait to see it in real life. The whole Dinardo family was excited to go, including me and my little sister Angelina. Angelina was only 8 years old. We’re seven years apart. She had golden blonde hair the color of honey and freckles dotted across her face. My dad walked excitedly into my room telling me that
The American Dream, in my eyes, would be described as unrealistic. It's a notation put in people’s minds that an individual can achieve anything he or she sets his or her mind to do. Now the outlook is being perceived as pessimistic, then again, I believe “The American Dream” is overestimated. When I was a young child, I aspired to be a princess who lived in a castle with a handsome prince and live happily ever after; I aspired to be a princess until I was thirteen. Still, it was instantaneously disappointing when reality dawned upon me, I could never be a princess. Although it left me completely devastated, I soon realized, there’s a huge difference between dreams and reality.
The American Dream The American dream has always been a talk amongst the American culture. When people speak of it, they often think back to the 19th century. The American Dream can be thought about when learning information on the Declaration of Independence which states that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. This was written by Thomas Jefferson.
The difficulty of moving to a new culture is that a lot of people would feel fear because they are so use to their own culture, so now they leave what they are used to a new way and it will be hard for them to adapt. Some may like the new food and the pace of life, then later on in the month’s people may feel like the new life and culture is unpleasant life for instance: public hygiene, the language barriers, traffic safety, and food accessibility. Still the most part in relocating to a different culture is the communication because they might not understand the language or might say the wrong word thinking it means the same in the other countries. People adjusting to a new culture often feel lonely and homesick because they are not yet used to the new environment and meet people with whom they are not familiar every day.
Moving to another country and starting a new chapter of life are two of the most difficult things in life. Nobody wants to change, including me. In my country, Vietnam, people usually says that "if you have a chance to live in the United States, your future will be so bright because living in America is living on a field that is full of gold." When I was young and still as a child, my parent told me that we will be leaving Vietnam and moving to the United States in the future. When I heard that, I was so happy. Four years ago, my family and I moved to the United States with the hope of having a better future and the happiness of family reunion with my grandparent. On the way to United State, we always thought, expected, and hoped that everything will be okay and fine. After few months we have been living in the new country, problems started to happen. My parents could not communicate and understand people who spoken English because they had no chance to study English back in Vietnam. In Vietnam, they only used motorcycle. When they came here, they had to learn how to drive cars. It was really hard for my parents to find jobs since they could not speak and understand English, could not drive either. Everything was new and we had to learn and start everything from the beginning. It was really hard for my parent, including me.
Christmas to me is a celebration, which includes spending time with my family, decorating the entire house, inside and out, and shopping, for the people I love. Doing this with the people I love is what means the most to me. Spending Christmas with my family is very important to me. We usually gather and celebrate at my parent’s house, in East Tennessee. My husband, our three children, and myself travel from California. My two sisters, their husbands, and children come from a nearby town, for our celebration.
