The poem “My Darling Sara” by Shane Koyczan discusses one of the author’s relationship that had a rough end. It is a relationship that had its ups and downs but the author claims he tried to fight for it. Throughout the poem, the author is asked too many times to try and he finally finishes the text by stating that he “tried”. But what did he really try? Did he try enough?
The first time the author mentions he is trying is after Sara comments he uses the word Love in his poems too simply, almost as if he didn’t mean it. In her opinion, he should just say what he means instead of describing it as Love. With that, he continues saying that “what [he] means most is that / [he is] trying”. These lines are the first that make us wonder: What is he

He attempts to be a pen and tries to pour out his feelings when she asks him to. He attempts to be a surgeon when she states that hurt and pain are, sometimes, the results of trying —which make us believe that he is ready to heal her if he ever harmed her. He finally makes an attempt to be a man when she dies. He knows this is supposed to hurt, so he needs to let himself suffer because she was the woman he loved and men can cry. He tried for her. He tried to be better for her. He fought for her. But now that she is gone, he is trying to convince himself that whatever happened to her wasn’t his fault. No matter what, he will always try for …show more content…
Why would he have to pretend to be a pen, an emotional tool? Why would he have to pretend to be a surgeon, who is trained to not be attached to their patients? If he wanted to show her his feelings he could have opted to be a lover. If he wanted to help her, the best way would have been by staying by her side and showing her all the love he has for her. If he wanted to fight for his relationship maybe he should have shown her his real self rather than unemotional characters.
The poem starts and ends the same way. The failing of his right hand seems to be a physical problem that is keeping him from doing his work, from writing. Which may have been why he found himself at the bar where he met Sara, maybe he was trying to forget about his problems for a while. When he meets her she brings back some joy to his life. However, the fact that he no longer is able to do his job is what keeps him down. That is why she asks him to try. She wants him to try to be happier. To try to be himself again. To try to be one hundred percent in that relationship, because one alone can’t make it
This shows how greedy and selfish he was for not caring about what anyone else feels, and how he thinks he is the only one that matters.
The poem being separated into two indicates change of direction. In the sestet, there is a sudden change in emotion. The first line, ‘the final hour’, immediately shows this. The father is now dying. Weak. ‘Your hands between the sheets’ indicates that the father is in a bed, suggesting restricted physical movement, unlike before. There is then a role reversal, as the son is lifting the fat...

When he writes, “I went to look for him, but at the same moment this thought came into my mind, “Don’t let me find him! If only I could get rid of this dead weight, so that I could use all my strength to struggle for my own survival, and only worry about myself”” (pg.101) This is one of the first times you see that the way he has changed mentally because in the beginning of the story, the only thing he cared about was keeping up with his father. This shows that he really doesn’t care about anything besides own survival anymore. Later when his father dies he writes “I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep … And, in the depths of my being in the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I have searched it, I might find something like – Free at last!” In this you see that he thought of his father like he was a burden and that he was happy he no longer had to look after him. Also he says that he could not weep over his father’s death when his father used to be the only thing that kept him going, and he never wanted to be separated from his
He falls in love with Elizabeth, his adopted sister, and all is well until his mother dies of Scarlet Fever. This tears him apart as they were very close and influences him and his future greatly. He determines to become a doctor to find the secret of life so no one need ever die again. This leads him to Ingolstadt University where he is further influenced when he finds out that one of the professors there has also experimented with creating life. He uncovers the truth and ignoring all warnings, begins making his creature from the parts of dead bodies.

His memory of her is sweet and beautiful so that even without saying it, it is obvious that he was, and possibly is still, in love with her. He remembered the past and convinced himself that it could be like that once again. He became delusional with love, and was blinded by it.

A character’s attempt to recapture the past is important in many poems and stories. " Fifth Grade Autobiography" by Rita Dove, succeeds at recapturing the poet's past. The poem's speaker is a the author and the addresse is the audience. The subject of the poem is one of remembrance. The tone is childlike, innocent and sadness and the theme is reminiscent. We discover the poet is describing a particular memory that shows reverence and longing for her grandfather, who is dead at the time she writes the poem. Dove recaptures memories as a child on a particular day and her interaction with her brother and grandparents especially her grandfather with great detail. The author recaptures the memory in the poem by looking at an old photo and describing, the things that were taking time at the place of the picture not exactly what is pticutred..
The poem “Making Sarah Cry” and the play “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” have a similar theme of being different. Even though they have the same theme, they show it different ways. For instance, the characters have a different influence on others.
...e, because she’s too busy running around on some-” (Gaitskill 317) and these words show us how utterly “shitty” (Gaitskill 317) he feels, be it warranted or not. He’s faced with the reality that his wife and daughter are ‘leaving’ him behind, doing whatever necessary to detach themselves from his wretched stubbornness and consequently he’s left miserable and alone to mull over the bitter past and even more difficult present. He begins as a likeable character, but gradually becomes a self-righteous and hateful idiot. But, by the end the reader is left feeling extremely sympathetic for him. Though he’s in fact the bad guy, he gets us to view him as the bad guy whose evil is almost justified, or at least that it’s an inevitable symptom of his difficult childhood, poor marriage, extreme anxiety over what others think of him, and disapproval of his daughters lifestyle.

On line 17, Bishop uses the present tense words “I love.” as if admitting that she still loves the person she lost. Then again as followed on line 17 “.I shan’t have lied. It’s evident in the adage”. She admits that she lied in her poem.
He also uses other devices like imagery, allusion and similes to share his view. In the beginning the speaker shares his views and experiences with the phrase “I love you” by telling us what he notices. In the first stanza he states” I noticed that you always say it to each of your children” telling
