“The Waiting” and “My Cousin Clarette” both have two pairs of girls. In “The Waiting” the girls are Henrietta and Juliette. In “My Cousin Clarette,” the girls were Clarette and Victoria. There were defense mechanisms, character growth, and psychological make up within the two pairs which made them either different or the same. A way that made the two pairs similar is that they are all relatives, and Clarette and Juliette were two faced. There were also differences between the two pairs such as the fact that Henrietta and Juliette actually loved each other, whereas Clarette and Victoria pretend to do so. Furthermore there were defense mechanisms, character growths, and a two faced personality among the two pairs. Both of the pairs did not have defense mechanisms. In “My Cousin Clarette,” every time Clarette mocked Victoria, Victoria stayed silent and accepted her cousin’s words. In no way did Victoria ever defend herself against Clarette’s bullying. In the other story, Henrietta was a very quiet girl and her sister, Juliette, was the opposite of her. Their mom would often talk about her daughters and was very boastful of Juliette but not much of Henrietta. Even though Henrietta heard all these things, she stayed quiet and never defended herself which made people think she was even more shy. …show more content…

Henrietta, who was once very quiet, almost invisible, steps onto a stage full of many people and finally comes out of her comfort zone. At the end of “The Waiting,” Juliette still thinks that she is superior to her sister, but others would find Henrietta more attractive. The pair in “My Cousin Clarette” did not display much character growth. At the end of the story, Victoria still seemed jealous when seeing Clarette. At the train station, she saw Clarette being perfect as always and looked down on herself because she did not even have matching
