My Counseling Journey

There are a few issues that I feel might be challenging for me as a counselor-in-training; beginning with the unknown. I am concerned with not knowing the expectations in my role as a school counselor and not knowing exactly where the boundaries are. Another challenge for me might be my perfectionist side. As I learn and grow in my professional identity, I will always push myself to go beyond the expectations. It will be important for me to recognize when I have performed to the best of my abilities. These will be challenging areas for me, but I feel that as I continue my educational journey, the expectations and boundaries will become clearer.

After reflecting on the time, I spent exploring the Internet resources available, I can foresee how these resources will help me in many ways. Not only will the resources assist me with the areas that I identified as challenges, but also for any challenges that may present themselves along the way. My professors tried to guide me toward being a Social Worker, but the more I researched different aspects of being a Social Worker the more I realized that didn’t fit with my vision. I graduated with my Associate's degree in Human Services and I wasn’t sure which direction I would go from there. All I knew is I was fascinated by psychology but not in a clinical sense. I received my Bachelor’s degree in General Psychology in August. It was during my last year of undergraduate school, I took a course that was designed to help us find our niche in life.
