I have spent much of my college career working with people who need a hand up instead of working on namable honors. I enjoy volunteering, taking on difficult tasks and schedules, and being involved behind the scenes of good things. My largest interest is learning and I dedicate most of my time to it. I attend every training, seminar, and presentation I can because I believe that knowledge is power. I am preparing to be well-rounded, well prepared, well educated, and professional in my field. I have faced challenges that could have stopped me from ever coming this far in my education and in my life plans, but I have pushed myself past anything life has thrown at me. I have gone far above and beyond what was required of me to just get by,
There are countless people who aspire to help people in their lives. However, if you think about it, nearly every career helps others in some way, shape, or form. Teachers, scientists, policemen and various other careers aid people in different ways. I, like many others, have always known that I’ve wanted to help people. Yet, I also want to do more than that. I want to help others, but also save others- emotionally or physically, mentor others, inspire others, and be there for others during their most vulnerable times. This is who I am- and I have always been this person. In first grade, I ran a lemonade stand at my school for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; I got my third grade class to raise money for starving children; and I put up with bullying throughout middle school because I befriended a girl who had trouble making friends on her own. The quality of pure selflessness and care for others that I have always possessed would allow me to do something great with my life- it just took me some time to figure out what.
My extracurricular and academic activities have helped mold me into a person with character and good qualities. These qualities--respect, humility, kindness, ambition, appreciation for diversity and collaboration, and courage--have not come without valuable failures and lessons. I can continue to develop these qualities and build upon these lessons as I go forward with my university goals and the desire I have to enter the healthcare profession as a nurse. I am able to look beyond the exciting, glamorous parts of both and see that there will be lots of hard work and difficulty. I am ready to face those challenges and do my best and give my all.
My adversities are the catalysts that lead to the enhancement of the opportunities in my life. I believe that my life is constructed with great purpose; a purpose that has caused the hardships I have endured thus far but also a purpose that is the core of my various achievements, a purpose that opens doors for me to support others and gives me the hope of an influential and resourceful future. My past history, present experience at Cardozo SHS and Future plans strengthen my desire to attend college and make me a great candidate for the Esperanza Scholarship.
As a college freshman, I was worried about so many things coming into college. The biggest and most important thing was how to actually succeed in college. This course has helped me tremendously with succeeding in college. Throughout this semester, we have gone through multiple topics to help us succeed in college. The topics range from effective note taking, caring for yourself, how to succeed in college, understanding who you are, and also to planning your priorities. From taking this class, I have learned many strategies that helped me understand who I am as a person, how to take effective notes, and how to plan my time.

My college career started with me just going to school to take PE classes while neglecting my main required core classes and always pushing them aside without any urgency to succeed in finishing school. A couple of years would go by with little to no progress and lack of motivation to succeed in finishing my college required classes. Soon landing a career oriented job and finding myself dropping out of college to focus on my work career. From this point and time I would learn the importance of school and the value of finish college through my years of experience at work. This awareness of value in finishing college would motivate me to want to go back to school. Soon I would find myself at American River College counseling center. Here I was coming back to school unsure of myself and in an environment where I previously never found success in school. After meeting with my counselor I was recommended to take a college success course. This course is part of a program called the Accelerated College Education (ACE). Because I was able to learn along the years being out of school the importance of gaining an education I gained a new motivation for school, signed up for this ACE program, and enroll in the college success
Since I have entered college, I have noticed a number of things about myself. I used to think that I was outgoing and confident, but now I feel the opposite about me is true. I discovered that I have Attention Deficit Disorder and a learning disability and this has caused a drop in my confidence related to school as well as other areas of my life. This influenced me to change my major from journalism to speech pathology where there are always people finding new ways of helping others that are disabled in the realm of speech. The appeal of helping people rediscover their voice after they have lost it, or just finding their voice in general really called to me. Now my goals are, instead of being a journalist working at a magazine, to work at a clinic with adults who have suffered from strokes and have aphasia or to travel around the world to help children learn to speak who have had cleft palate surgeries. For me to be able to help people that have an impairment that hinders their lives like myself has become very important to me.
The person I am today reflect on my mother and sister because they taught me right and how to be a lady. I stay classy never trash. I am a respectful and kind girl. I get along with everyone unless you get on my bad side. I hate drama so never bring that to me. I am really chill type of person I like to have fun and travel the world. There is a lot I want to accomplish in life. I want to become a radiologist it’s going to take a long time to become one but I am going to do whatever it takes. I also want to open a homeless shelter once I get older and start making that good cash money. I feel bad for those who don’t have a place to stay. I see so many of them when I lived in Atlanta and I just want to make a change for them in their lives. One thing I am trying to accomplish this year is to make A’s and have a GPA of a 4.0. Once I accomplish that I plan to transfer to Florida State University and finish my education there. It’s all up to me to do whatever it takes to accomplish this goals I set my self to do. I have change a lot I used to be lazy and never wanted to do anything and I seen school as a place just to get out of the home but I have seen now that school is much more than that. Without my education I will be doing nothing unless I see myself working at a fast food restaurant my whole life. Which I don’t see my future doing that. School is my main focus right
According to the NCES, nationwide, thirty to sixty percent of college freshmen require remedial courses in order to meet college admission requirements (2004). In Texas, 38 percent of Texas students enrolled in two-year colleges and technical schools and 24 percent of students at four-year public institutions took remedial courses during the 2006 academic year (Terry 2007). Twenty-eight percent of colleges in the United States report that students spend at least one year in remedial programs making it impossible to earn a degree in 2 or 4 years (NCES, 2003). These students have graduated from high school unprepared for participation in college courses. Unprepared student face both academic and financial barriers. Not preparing students for coursework and careers after high school is expensive. Remedial education courses are estimated to cost student one billion dollars annually. In addition, according to the ACT, despite participating in remedial classes, students who require remedial classes are significantly less likely to graduate from college (2005).
Growing up in a society where there are so many opportunities, I had no problem figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. I have always enjoyed helping others in any way that I was able too. From babysitting, raking leaves, serving as a volunteer for a number of organizations, no matter how big or small the need, I have always found it gratifying to help others. I ultimately recognized that I had to pursue a career in something that would allow me to help others, while positively giving back to the community. Many people ask me, “Who are you?” I am a hardworking student who has a goal to accomplish. My goal is to become a Clinical Social Worker. I have had this goal since I was in high school. The reason that I want to become a social worker is ensure an individual’s personal welfare, help prevent crises and counsel individuals, help couples, families, and communities. My environment has helped mold me into the young woman I have become. My home atmosphere is the reason I have the characteristics that I have. My initial understanding of the world comes from my parents. As I have gotten older I have created my own opinions and understandings of things.
I feel that all successful people must make a major positive contribution to the world in some way during their lifetimes. Not everyone can do this, however, and it seems that your view on life has a major effect on your ability to do so. I hope that while developing my skills I also will develop the mindset required to make a major contribution to the world. Ultimately, I think that if I continue to participate in extracurricular activities and courses that hone my knowledge and skills I will be able to have a successful career as a computer engineer, and eventually have an impact on the world for the greater good.
College has been such a culture shock for me. I never would have pictured myself being here. I am a freshman at the Community College of Rhode Island after unsuccessfully tried The talent development program at the University of Rhode Island. When I first entered the Community College of Rhode Island I was scared. I didn’t have a clue of what I wanted to be I believed that college was going to be a waste. What will I do for the rest of my life? Every person asks this question at some stage of their life, usually during their later teenage years. As a high school junior, I am now asking myself this question. After considerable thought, I have devised a tentative plan for my future. I realize that some of these plans and goals may change over time, but with a plan, the first steps of the journey can begin. To prepare me for the journey, I have taken very challenging high school curriculum, such as Honors and Advanced Placement courses. These classes will not only assist in my admission to college, but have also helped me to develop strong study skills and time management.
As I stated earlier, outwardly I need some work and I am the only one who can do it. I am spiritually fit and grateful that I can see the good in most situations and maintain a positive outlook on life. Going back to school is a major hurdle for me, I started 30 years ago and I feel that I need to finish it.
