My Chosen Career Growing up as children, my close in aged sister and I had the same dreams of being Medical Nurses, following in our parents and the women in both of our families footsteps. As we grew older, we experienced different things, I realized that my sister’s dreams had remained the same, and my dreams of becoming a Nurse, ended up being crushed. While working in the Retail/Warehouse Industry as a Front-end Cashier, I sustained a work-related injury and were diagnosed with having “tendonitis.” My job duties and functions had to be modified to accommodate the injury. Medical Billing and Coding is a profession that plays crucial part in the healthcare industry. Their job duties includes: being in charge of accurately coding a patient 's diagnosis, reviewing and processing patient data such as treatment records, comply with Federal legislation mandating the use of electronic medical records, and are skilled in the complex computer software and systems of medical invoicing for reimbursements (payments) and for insurance purposes. To be certified as a (MIBC), I would have to provide proof of completion of coursework from a training program, have at least 2 years of work-related experience, internship or hands-on practicum in MIBC, or have a postsecondary certificate or an associate’s degree in Medical Insurance Billing and Coding. Not to mention that I would also have to take and pass the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) national certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), pay an application fee, and be a member of any one of the national organizations such as the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) to obtain my credentials and certification. Being certified would then, make me more of a marketable candidate for employment purposes with greater considerations for the higher salary paying

For as long as she could remember, Sara had was set on being a teacher. Following those childhood aspirations, she went into college to become a teacher. Unfortunately, Sara had to acknowledge the fact that a teacher’s salary may not support her and her big plans. Growing up just south of Detroit meant that Sara was able to see all of the struggles that would be difficult to overcome. A teacher just would not cut it. I realized nursing was the profession for me when my grandfather became terribly sick with lung cancer during my freshman year of high school.
