Scientists tell us that our sense of smell is the sense most closely related to memory. I have to say I agree. It only takes a whiff of freshly brewed coffee to transport me back to my childhood. Yes, my olfactory sense works better than H.G. Wells' time machine. One moment I am comfortably seated in mid-western suburbia; the next moment I am sitting in the kitchen of Grandmother Randel's house in Tampa, Florida.
Grandmother Randel, like most Southern Belles, was a marvelous cook, and an even better cook-supervisor. A steady supply of cheese grits, collard greens and fried chicken flowed out of the kitchen under her discerning eye, but when it came to coffee ? Grandmother reigned supreme.
I remember Grandmother fussing around her electric percolator in the mornings. She never measured the ingredients ? freshly ground coffee, chicory, a pinch of salt and maybe an egg would be deftly placed within the gleaming appliance. Rich delicious coffee came out of that pot but the catch was, it wasn't for me. Friends and neighbors would come by the house to gather in the large, comfortable sitting room and sip the steaming hot coffee while they discussed the problems of the day whether of the community (this was never called 'gossip') or of the world.
Coffee was only for grown-ups; however, on special occasions, Grandmother would turn to me and say, "Leah, baby, how would you like some coffee-milk?" Coffee-milk. The nectar of the gods should be so sweet. For the price of a big smile and a nod, I would watch carefully as she lifted the chrome-covered coffee percolator and gingerly poured a small amount of its coveted contents into my mug. A small carafe of warmed milk sat on the back of the stove waiting to fill the cup to the rim....

My cup is just about empty, and I'm wondering if I can afford another. My memories and I are not ready to leave this place yet. A quick inventory of my wallet tells me that I just might be in luck. There are four one-dollar bills in there, so I shift my weight forward on the sunken sofa and push-off to rise. As I move toward the counter to get a refill the door opens and the entry fills with the noise and conversation of more customers, or perhaps I should say visitors.
The friendly barista smiles at me and his dreadlocks move lightly as he turns to hand me my latte. I can see the attraction of Lola's ? coffee, comfort and company. Now if only my budget can hold out.
As people go on living their normal day to day life, the influence of friends, family, and social media affect day to day life. Depending on the people and places they grow up around, it is not unusual for an individual to hear tall tales or myths as a child and hold on to that idea, assuming it stands factual. The language used to describe the medical disadvantages concerning coffee remained a popular myth. Individuals believed coffee would stunt their growth. Before the spread of this fictitious story, common belief in 17th century England included coffee
One of my favorite places located along Fifth Avenue is Starbucks, a coffee shop offering many different types of coffees, teas, and snacks. I frequently find my way down to this coffee shop after school meetings, on weekends, or on days when I just ne...
Starbucks is a company in which purchases and roasts high quality whole bean coffees and sells them along with fresh, rich-brewed, Italian style espresso beverages, a variety of pastries and confections, and coffee-related accessories and equipment (starbucks.com). During my environmental scan in which took place at the Starbucks on the corner of Fair and Newport across the street from vanguard, I noticed many things in which where never brought to my attention in prior stays and visits at Starbucks; such as the many social groups in which choose to have their meetings at Starbucks. Thus in this essay we will discuss things in which many people do not really notice when going to Starbucks.
Every so often someone might catch a quick whiff of pine trees or campfire smoke that suddenly bring them back to that time when they went camping, or took a hike in the woods. This is called odor-evoked autobiographical memory. In other words, it is when a person can remember something from the past based on a specific smell. Research has shown that smells are the strongest reminders of events from the past. Scientists think this is true because of the way the brain processes smells and memories. Smells get taken through the olfactory bulb (the smell analyzing region of the brain). The olfactory bulb is connected to the amygdala (the part of
Americans are obsessed with a lot of things: our smart phones, celebrities, and finding a good bargain. But perhaps the thing we’re most obsessed with is good ol’ coffee. For many of us, our mornings are perfectly diabolical without at least a cup or two or three of the stuff. And, come 2 o’clock, when we know in our heart and bones we’ll never make it ‘til five and we need that pick me up, many of us head to the nearest deli or barista to grab a cup of “second wind.”
regular coffee please." Man, did I get a look of the lady behind me. I
As I walk toward the register, there is a large display of Starbucks merchandise. On these shelves are Starbucks travel cups, mugs and coffee grinds from Kenya and
I sniff the coffee and could not smell anything. I took a sip and a bitter taste rushed through my mouth. My sister said as she still stared at her phone, “ Bitter, right? It tastes nasty, I should have order water instead because this cost me about $4.” I continued to read Seedfolks again and I was on Maricella’s story, until I was disturbed by a conversation between two high school student behind me. The conversation went like this:
This lady is the most wonderful person I 've ever met. She is old, affectionate, and intelligent. It took me eighteen years to realize how much this extraordinary person influenced my life. She 's the type of person who charms everyone with her stories and experiences. She always time for her family and friends. She is the kind of leader who does everything to keep her family together and in harmony. She is my grandmother.
It appears that coffee was discovered in the ninth century after a goatherd named Kaldi found the berries that his sheep were eating made his sheep and then himself unusually energetic. The stimulating berries after being roasted and brewed eventually evolved into coffee as a hot drink and became popular throughout Arabia, Turkey and Europe by the seventeenth century. (Thomson, 2006). In 1901, the first successful technique for manufacturing a stable powered product was invented by Sartori Kato, a Japanese chemist living in America. Kato received a patent for his invention and the instant coffee history was made. He then set up his own coffee company named Kato Coffee Company in Chicago (Stefanie, n.d.).
When I think back to the days when I was a child, I think about all of my wonderful childhood memories. Often I wish to go back, back to that point in life when everything seemed simpler. Sometimes I think about it too much, knowing I cannot return. Yet there is still one place I can count on to take me back to that state of mind, my grandparent’s house and the land I love so much.
coffee in the air at all times. It seemed like all my grandmother did was make coffee.
The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.
The familiar smell of soft cookies and homemade cooking are common thoughts when people think about their grandma's house. Great feasts and family gatherings play a part in everyone's grandmother's home. But when I really think about my grandma's house only one word comes to my mind: fun.
Some of my oldest and fondest memories of my early life are of my Grandparent’s house where I frequently played, loved, and laughed. When my mother remarried we moved about an hour away and I have not been able to see them as often. So on occasions when I get to visit them it was an exciting thing. One of grandmother’s favorite dishes to cook during the cooler months is chili. Everything about this time was special to me, not just because the chili was delicious, but it is a time that my family comes together and enjoys each other’s company. Even the memory of that smell of chili cooking on her stove still makes me think of sweaters, family, warmth and love.
