War is Futile
“They have been killing children in this war. They don't care. They’ll throw you in a prison ship and let you rot (Collier and Collier 72.) War has not been fair for over many centuries and it probably won’t ever be. The people that are fighting for something that they believe in or fighting for justice, they are careless and they don't think outside of the box. Like whether they are hurting or killing innocent people, and also whose families they are hurting by going to war. In the book My Brother Sam is Dead By James Collier and Christopher Collier the authors are against war and they don't approve of it. During the book the authors hint towards the readers that it is not worth it and it is not fair.
War
is separating families and causing familes to hurt one another, whether its not agreeing on which side they are on or dying in battle. In the book the Meeker family has a separation come between the dad and the son, Sam and Mr. Meeker. “Thats not what they say in New Haven, sir,” Sam said. “They say that the whole colony of Massachusetts fights, Connnecticut will fight, too.” (Collier and Collier 6.) Sam is on the other side and wants to fight for the Patriots and not be on the Tories or British. He wants to do the right thing and Sam thinks fighting for the other side is. But nether side is doing the right thing, the Patriots or the British. War is never worth losing your loved ones and also killing people because the people in battle think it is right. During the book, the war had a big effect on the citizens of the city of Connecuit and the students of Yale. The Yale students rushed to join the big battle between the Patriots and the British and went to get weapons from the tavern. The students are quiting school and willing to go to war and just forget about going to school. Also not many of the people of connectuit like this, where students are quting, taking there food, and also weapons. There were pettitions going around to stop having the soliders take there food. Mr. Beach is an elderly loyalist and he doesnt like the war and he is big part of the book. War isnt just hurting people physically, it is also hurting them internally. Also many of the yale students are younf adults and shouldnt be quiting school to fight, they should be going on. There are many deaths, many deaths between some main characters to characters that shouldnt even been killed. “ He wasnt dead yet. He lay there shaking and thrasing about, his knees jerking up and down. They shot him from so close that his clothes were on fire. He went on jerking on his chest until another solider shot him again (Collier and Collier 208.) This death from the book is the one of the main characters and his name is Sam. He didnt die in war, he died by being excuted by his own side. This is proving that the authors think the war is useless and not worth dying for and it is also careless. The authors were pushing towards that war is careless and useless. War shouldnt be killing inoscent people, they should think more about it and go it to more depth. Also by looking at the bigger picture. Many tragic events happen in war and there shouldnt be.
My Brother Sam is Dead Author: by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier Category: Historical Fiction Summary: It starts out in the 1770's during the Revolution War and Samuel Meeker or Sam for short just interred the room of the tavern and he chimes in to everybody who is waiting to eat, he comes in saying where beating the Lobster Backs. His father, Eliphalet Meeker but called Life for short, starts arguing with son. After a while they calmed down and change the subject.
My thoughts after reading this book are that war can really take a toll on someone and war can bring out the worst in everyone. Works Cited:.. Caputo, Philip. The. A Rumor of War.
“Every war is everyone’s war”... war will bring out the worst in even the strongest and kindest people. The book tells about how ones greed for something can destroy everything for both people and animals leaving them broken beyond repair, leaving them only with questions… Will they ever see their family again? Will they ever experience what it’s like to
...it may help us arrive at an understanding of the war situation through the eyes of what were those of an innocent child. It is almost unique in the sense that this was perhaps the first time that a child soldier has been able to directly give literary voice to one of the most distressing phenomena of the late 20th century: the rise of the child-killer. While the book does give a glimpse of the war situation, the story should be taken with a grain of salt.
In the novel, My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier, they teach that there are many other ways to solve conflict besides war. War is violent, disgusting, and gruesome and so many people die in war. Families separate in war because of how many people want to be in the thrill of the war and also how many innocent family members die in the midst of war. Lastly, war is worthless and it was caused by a disagreement over something little and the outcome of war is not worth the many lives, time, and money and there are other ways to solve conflict besides to fight. War causes so many negative outcomes on this world that it needs to be avoided at all costs.
One way the authors disagree towards war is the separation of families. Throughout the book, many families were torn apart, leaving the rest weeping for those who left them. “Go, Sam. Go. Get out of my sight. I can’t bear to look at you anymore in that vile costume.” (Collier and Collier 22). The quote depicts Sam’s father
First, Holden attempts to cope with the loss of his brother Allie, but continues to feel depressed and alone. As a result of Allie’s death, it immediately affected Holden and his actions. This is where his anger began to develop. His immediate response was to lash out despite the consequences he would face. Later he would find out that consequence would be not attending the funeral. His parents “were going to have [him] psychoanalyzed and all, because [he] broke all the windows in the garage” (Salinger 44). Also, Holden breaking his hand could have been a cry for attention and his regret. At one point he had wished his brother was dead, but then when he actually died Holden was devastated. By lashing out and injuring his hand he was full of anger, but also “he received the attention and sympathy which were denied him during Allie's illness” (Miller).
No one really thinks about how devastating it might be to lose a sibling when you're young. However, Holden Caulfield, the main character in J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye,” has to experience this devastation. Holden is merely 13 years old when his 11 year old brother Allie dies of leukemia. The two boys were extremely close and Holden is traumatized, he spends that night punching out windows with his bare hands. Many articles have been written about the adverse effects of a sibling’s death has on a child, even later in life, and Holden was surely effected. After Allie’s death, Holden isolates himself, begins to do worse in school, and grasps onto the concept on innocence and childhood and cannot let go.
Freedom is a positive outcome of war that people wish to achieve, but do people consider the negatives too? Major loss can come with the brutality of war. In my My Brother Sam is Dead the author helps you explore the negatives of war and the tough decisions for a young boy living through the American Revolution. The young boy, Tim, had to choose a side, to part with his brother as a Patriot or obey his father’s wants and be a Loyalist. After many traumatic events, including the harsh deaths of Jerry, Sam, and Life, Tim decides to stay neutral.
The overall position I have used for the claims, reasoning, and text evidence is that Mr.Hoo killed Sam Westing. The first claim is that Mr. Westing stole his disposable paper diaper idea and made millions. In the text it says on page 101 “Hoo sued Sam Westing over the invention of the disposable paper diaper”. Mr.Hoo is jealous of Mr.Westing due to the fact that he did not make millions of dollars. Mr.Hoo is poor and must work while Mr.Westing is living the easy life with all that money he had gotten from the idea he got from Mr.Hoo making Mr.Hoo mad that it could have been his money. The second claim to go with the overall position I stated is that Mr.Hoo is a mean man. I know this since in the text it says on page 132 “Maybe i’m lucky my
The “Man I Killed” takes us into the Vietnam War and tell us about a soldiers first time of killing another individual. The author describes a Viet Cong soldier that he has killed, using vivid, physical detail with clear descriptions of the dead mans’ fatal wounds. O'Brien envisions the biography of this man and envisions the individual history of the dead Vietnamese soldier starting with his birthplace moving through his life, and finished with him enrolling in the Vietnamese Army. O'Brien also describes some of the dead soldiers’ hopes and dreams. The author uses this history in an attempt to make the dead man more realistic to the reader
... and remorse inside C.Os by presenting them a situation in which they would be questioned about the war by their children which may not happen in reality as some children's may feel the opposite and instead feel proud of the father taking a stand for what his rights. In addition to this the government are trying to put C.Os in a early negative mindset of feeling guilt and remorse for their actions so it gradually build to the day they get confronted by their children which might no even happen which compromises the reliability of the source. Being a primary interpretation is is partly useful as it deems negativity because it wants o change the mindset of C.Os to make them feel embarrassment and guilt, however the source also interprets to us how desperate and selfish government was as they just cared about winning the war and ignored C.Os moral beliefs.
A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain ...
War has always been something to be dreaded by people since nothing good comes from it. War affects people of all ages, cultures, races and religion. It brings change, destruction and death and these affect people to great extents. “Every day as a result of war and conflict thousands of civilians are killed, and more than half of these victims are children” (Graca & Salgado, 81). War is hard on each and every affected person, but the most affected are the children.
War is an inevitable struggle that humanity constantly faces. It is best described by the words of Bertrand Russell, an English philosopher; “War does not determine who is right - only who is left.” There are many consequences of war, such as economic, developmental and security: however an important one is humanitarian, more specifically, the psychological effect that war and violence impacts on the population. In most literature, the protagonist in a war event is often depicted as an older individual, one who is in their adult years, and their journey through the event. Nevertheless in Bernard Cornwell’s The Last Kingdom and Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief both of the protagonists are both considerably younger than
