My aspiration to undertake the Bachelor of Nursing (Adult) degree has stemmed from personal experiences, for the last 4 years I have spent a lot of time in hospitals with my son. 2 years ago he was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. The way nurses treated my son and I was overwhelming. They made us feel comfortable and safe as hospital trips for my son are always traumatic due to his condition. After the diagnosis the nurses comforted and reassured me at one of the hardest times of my life. These nurses were an inspiration to me. This enhanced my desire and drive to work within care. Being a parent to an autistic child has taught me many skills I am now more accepting and aware of others and their circumstances. It has so made me calmer in stressful situations. This is why I am applying for adult nursing to be able to work with adults with wide range of health issues and challenges. Two years ago I left my part time job in retail to work in domiciliary care. During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. I am interested in a nurse residency at Cook Children’s because of its excellent reputation in patient satisfaction, standard of care, and community involvement. A residency at Cook Children’s would allow me to gain more experience and know...
Becoming a nurse is probably my most noteworthy achievement. Neither of my parents or any family member have ever been to college. My family was never in the best life circumstances of me leaving for college. Yet, I was privileged enough to be able to put myself through school financially, by working various jobs. Being able to achieve my Bachelor's degree from an accredited school is a great achievement I am proud of. Becoming a nurse was the easy part though, the relationships that developed through my experiences have become my most meaningful and difficult achievements. Day in and day out I see people at their worst. People are stressed, hurt and afraid. I love being able to give them strength, hope and compassion. This relationship works both ways though. Patients', their families and their lives have taught me so much. The experiences nursing has given have become my most meaningful achievements. My goal to pursue advanced practice nursing will only further these achievements. I hope to encourage people more, teaching them how to take control of their lives in whatever way they see fit. I know I cannot teach passion, but I hope to inspire people by having them witness the passion that I have, passion that I have acquired by watching patients and their experiences. I fully anticipate to keep giving my gift to wherever the
Through the traumatic experience of my father’s illness, a positive and optimistic perspective of commitment to nursing career evolved. My journey of becoming a nurse and commitment of shining a bright light on another individual life has been my life long goal. I moved to the United States in early 1980 and with God help and guidance, I followed the nursing career and promised to make a small difference. During my first years as a nursing student, I took a part-time volunteered position as a candy-stripe and a part-time position as a nurse aid in a community hospital to provide relief and support to hospital staffs. I rocked and read poems for babies in the nursery, as a nurse aid I assist nurses with vital signs, blood pressures, fill ice pitchers in patient rooms, runs specimens to labs and sit with patients in the room and feed patients. I still volunteer in my hospital oncology department and the underserved and homeless clinics with several Emory physicians at the Good Samaritan Health Center, Mercy Care and National AIDS Education and Services for Minorities (NAESM) all in Fulton County, Ga, because it gave me fulfillment and appreciative of life
It all began when I started volunteering in Los Angeles, with my mother at Asian Pacific Health Care Clinic. Asian Pacific Health Care Clinic is a clinic for low-income families who were in need of vaccinations and other health care services. One day my mom received a phone call from the clinic and asked me to go volunteer with her. Since that day, I would have never guessed that it will impact my decision in pursuing my career as a nurse. I was assigned to help patients fill out vaccination forms, translate verbally, and assist the nurses who were in need of my help. I noticed the joy on each patient’s face once they were finished their vaccinations, and it made me happy to know I put a smile on people 's face after their vaccinations. Since that day, I have grown a passion for volunteering and helping others. Another factor that drew me to the nursing profession, was when I volunteered at a
I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit. Through observing rounds and being in the medical setting, I truly knew this is where I wanted to
My interest in nursing is fairly new; I had not explored the potential that a nursing career can offer. I became familiar with nursing professionally after becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. While working with patients, side-by-side with nurses I became enamored with the potential of a nursing career. I now have a rewarding career working as a Medical-Surgical nurse on a Medical University Hospital floor that specializes in Transplant, Nephrology and Urology. Nursing encompasses the ideologies that fuel my passion, upon further research, and conversation with coworkers I realize my career goal of Family Nurse Practitioner; affording me the privilege to care for others by reaching out to various
To begin my personal statement, I grew up in the West African nation of The Gambia. I am the youngest of thirteen children and I was adopted by my uncle and his wife at age 2. My adoption was very different than the American way where all sorts of contractual documents had to be signed. Although the end results are the same, mine was done without signing any documents because my parents were just giving me up to my uncle and his wife to raise me. At age 5, my uncle enrolled me at Primary School without the consent of my biological parents for fearing that they would object because most parents in the Gambia do not think girls have the same rights to education as boys. I grew up without a television, running water or electricity. I did not know that I lacked
Nursing is not my job, this is my career. Gaining advance nursing education is my goal. I don’t even remember when I decided to be a nurse because I used to say I want to be a nurse when one of my teachers asked me in my grade 2. When I was in grade 4, we had to study about Florence Nightingale and I came to know how she helped people
I chose nursing as a career because I found the work challenging, exciting and rewarding. I feel my skills and attributes are well suited for nursing. My ability to sta...
Being accountable to me as a professional is saying yes to the call and responsibility we have to bear out. It is a responsibility we take for ourselves and for others who rely on us to be present in any situations. The mission requires an openness to relationship with others. The consistency of performing at a higher level each time the job is done and strive to give all for the greatest good. In collaboration with others involved. That bond can strengthen when everyone involved intersect their effort to the same purpose. It’s been my desire, longing for a nursing career since I was in my primary and secondary school. At the age of 12, I began to look after children and baby-sitting then, from there, I gained the understanding of how to deal with children. Nursing is one of the highly demanding careers that bring new challenges every day and it comes with various rewards and a real sense of job satisfaction. I chose nursing because it is a profession where you never really finish learning. It has been my dream job since my tender age. Seeing nurses visiting my school treating students, immunisation, teaching us about health and sexual health issues, this encouraged me. My goal and desire at that age have been to help people within the Health sector. That is how; I decided to go to college where I am currently doing my Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science), which involves Biology and Chemistry. I chose this pathway because I want to gain the relevant skills and knowledge of my career to be. As someone who wants to become a nurse, I found biology as an important role in the delivery of client car...
Adult Nursing is a very rewarding career which provides endless opportunities. I would describe myself as a caring and compassionate person. I believe I possess these qualities naturally. I am compelled to put other people’s needs before my own. I can contribute my personal qualities to this course of being dedicated and determined into committing myself to this 3 year course and excelling academically. Personally, caring for my mother with high blood pressure made me interested in the world of medicine. This long term sickness inspired me to gain more experience outside of the home and volunteer which confirmed that this was the right course for me. I am fascinated by the practical aspect that the course involves as well as the theoretical
Based on my background which was Special Education, my mind was opened that there are a lot of people who has special needs that call for both educational and health assistance. As we were discussing the different health conditions, I realised that I want to take another path other than being a teacher that will allow me to help a larger scale of people. Hence I came up with the decision of wanting to become a nurse. Since I am a person who is often described as someone who has compassion, kind, empathic and have a big heart for those in need, I think I am suitable to become a nurse.
I have always wanted to become a nurse since I was a little girl, seeing both of my grandmothers working in a hospitals and always helping everyone in need. My goals in becoming a nurse is just the basic foundation of just helping people who physically cannot help themselves. I want to be able to shed light in people's lives who are losing it because of their situation. I feel as nurses is the backbone in the hospital. The nurses are there day in and day out with the patients, holding their hands and walking them and their families throughout such a difficult time. Nurses are also their supporting the doctors and all other staff. I’ve found especially in these past few years that I want to spend my life helping others and that's what I can
