“Mustang”, the highly expressive debut feature by the French-Turkish filmmaker, Deniz Gamze Erguven, was attractively executed through an unobtrusive direction and graceful acting. The screenplay, co-written by Erguven and Alice Winocour who directed the audacious “Augustine” three years ago, was pretty straightforward, depicting the lives of five teen orphaned sisters who are suddenly placed in the local ‘market’ by their grandmother and the uncle who raised them, awaiting the first chance to get married. The film starts on the last day of school in an ultra-conservative rural village of Turkey. The sisters are sad to say goodbye to their teacher who will be transferred to Istanbul the following year. One night Rodolfo overhears Sofia from the attic telling her mother that she is engaged; he is not happy about it but eventually comes to terms and accepts for Sofia to get married. Meanwhile he also tries to connect with his smaller daughter Ana Paula since he has come to realize that his relationship with his older daughter is non-existing. Eventually the family finds out that he has been staying in the attic and Miriam allows for him to move back into the guest room. They agree that he will live there until Sofia’s wedding day. During this time he begins to work on the leaks of the house and restores the house for Sofia’s wedding, meanwhile both Miriam and Rodolfo seem to miss each other and find connections again yet they don’t admit it to each other as well they both stop seeing their lovers. The day of the wedding comes and Rodolfo keeps his word and moves out to his own apartment. The divorce also goes through although it seemed they both new they were making the wrong decision. In the end Rodolfo gains the courage to take serenade to Miriam and they get together again. Sofia ends up getting the blessing from her parents to get married, Victoria gets a scholarship to go study journalism abroad and Ana Paula has gained more attention from both her parents. By using the older sister’s point of view to narrate the story, the author is able recount the injustices done to Sister as well as angle for sympathy from the audience. From the beginning of the story, Sister builds a case by blaming the discomfort and anguish of her home on Stella-Rondo. Sister states “Of course I went with Mr. Whitaker first…and Stella-Rondo broke us up”, to depict how the strained relationship with her younger sister started. Although there are many unexpected conflicts within the family, this action of Stella-Rondo stealing her older sister’s boyfriend is the core, driving force of all of the conflicts within the household. To relentlessly reiterate this point, the author uses the narrator’s anger to constantly bring up the separation of the spoiled Stella Rondo and Mr. Whitaker.
Expectations are define as personal belief that something will happen. It’s similar to judgment or assumption people made to a certain person or group of people. It may not be true and it could be different from what is expected. People can also change how they live their lives based on their own expectations just like how the Greasers and the Socs had different expectations. These two groups have contrast expectations that caused bad actions to come up or lead them to benefits for their own group. Expectations may force people into something they are not, even if it is to become a hero or the opposite.
The two girls found nothing but that. The younger sister Nea, takes the unusual role of the guardian, while the older sister Sourdi is atypically being cared for by Nea. An example of how Nea defies the role of a typical younger sister is evident in Nea’s level of maturity. When the sisters move to Texas with their mother, the sisters are placed in a position where they must work to support the family. Nea feels “proud” to be working in what she calls “our own restaurant” (137).

Kieu and Scholar Ma left for his home—a brothel he owns and operates alongside a woman named Dame Tu. Kieu was shocked to find out how little she knew about the man she married. Dame Tu brutally beat Kieu upon her return (Thong 70). Kieu’s heart was broken once again over her twisted fate. My father is a mechanic. He works at a company that is distant from our home. This was due to the company being the only one and the first where cars were being assembled in Ethiopia. Sometimes on the weekends I used to go to his work place. He would give me a trip of the place; the station was filled with vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles. It was separated by sections. In each section there were only one type of vehicle and the assembly process was shown step by step. From a fuse to large engine of the car, components were getting attached.
