All around the world, there are many varieties of wedding traditions. Some couples get eloped, some have huge ceremonies, and some just sign a piece of paper in their local courthouse. Today, I am going to talk about Islam, and specifically Muslims and their wedding traditions. Weddings are so exciting, especially if you are the one getting married. Every wedding is beautiful in their own unique and wonderful way. Getting married in Islam is traditionally unique. Mostly because getting married in Islam is seen more as an obligation – specifically religiously. A huge, if not the biggest, part of the contract between the couple getting married has to do with tying their love and honor to Allah. Allah is the all-knowing and all-powerful Islamic

A mosque is defined as a Muslim place of worship. All marriage traditions are all different, mostly depending on their culture. During the ceremony and the reception, both men and women are forced to separate. Also, Islam does not officially have a clergy. So, any educated Muslim who can understand the importance and education behind the traditions of Islamic weddings can legally officiate and marry the couple. However, if you are having your ceremony inside of a mosque, you can have a Qazi, which is an officer of marriage, officiate your wedding. When two are set to be married in Islam, they must both sign what is called a meher. A meher is a form of payment or possession given by the groom, or the groom’s father, that legally becomes the bride’s after they soon get married. In America, most couples are known to present a ring as a promise to stay faithful and love one another. Here, once the meher is signed, the bride is guaranteed freedom and security for as long as they both shall live. Also, when it comes to more vows and blessings, in the book of the Quran, which is the sacred book in Islam, the bride and groom are set to recite the first chapter – Fatihah. When reciting this, the other partner is meant to listen. Although this is the most common form of marriage in Islam, some bride and grooms do still say vows. The bride will say how they offer themselves to their husband forever, with accordance to the book of the Quran, and promises to be a faithful and obedient wife. While the bride states this, the groom promises to be a faithful and helpful husband. These are the most commonly used traditional wedding vows, since vows are not widely used
