Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine are two of the foremost Rock-and-Roll publications of the past twenty years. With its first issue printed in 1967, Rolling Stone instantly became the leading Rock-and-Roll magazine of the United States. Overflowing with gritty news articles and classic rock icons, Rolling Stone attracts highly educated and mature audiences. Introduced little over 20 years ago, Spin is geared towards a younger generation and focuses on their interest in music and current events. Though Rolling Stone and Spin are both Rock-and¬-Roll publications, they implement different ideas of magazine size, articles, and cover art to reach their audience.
The first eye-catching difference is the size of the magazines themselves. Spin takes a more conservative approach to the publication's size. It is printed in the standard eleven-by-eight inch format used by most magazines in The United States. By choosing this size, Spin gains advantages such as portability and attraction. Rolling Stone on the other hand, has taken a quite different approach. With its massive size, almost double the size of a standard magazine, Rolling Stone draws prospective buyers in their direction. It is obvious that Rolling Stone's unique choice makes them stand out in a sea of clones. Whether readers think out of the box, or conform to the norm, they will find that magazine size is essential to publication sales.
News, political satire, films, and current events might lead readers to believe that they are reading The New Yorker; but in fact, all are present in today's modern day Rock-and-Roll magazines. Rolling Stone, being a very diverse publication, covers many topics in its articles including photos, film reviews, and up-and-coming musical artists. However, their intense reporting on current events and political satire appeal to a generally higher-educated and a more mature audience. Spin also includes film reviews and photos in its publications articles. Yet it focuses its attention on a younger crowd, with articles including comedy and musically-related news. Spin's attention to comedy and chart-topping musical acts draws the attention of single, undergraduates around twenty-something.
From sleek new photos of today's hottest bands, to ultra gorgeous supermodels, the covers of today's Rock-and-Roll magazines are sure to catch a reader's eye. Rolling Stone, with its huge magazine size, has opted to take a direction toward a more modern-like feel to their covers. With supermodels and classic rock bands draped across the front, consumers cannot help but snag it off the shelf. The larger than life photos definitely give Rolling Stone an edge.

A newspaper is a type of news media, and its goal is to inform the public. The documentary also fits into the category of social relationships. The documentary depicts many relationships that are a part of the New York Times. It shows partnerships between companies such as that with Vice and the Comcast – NBC merger. Additionally, the Times is made possible by a close relationship between its employees. The documentary makes frequent reference to the need for everyone to work well together and how that makes the Times such a great paper. The New York Time’s influence is not limited to finger categories; it affects millions of people worldwide.

Draper’s (2010) research regarding gayness to establish differences between models of straight masculinity in the magazine industry was extensive. He began his research by analyzing Details’ issues from September 1990 to September 2008 that had to do with gay men references. He then created a timeline that determined the gay moments that occurred and also analyzed the way editors at Details talked to and about their audience. These were his methods of data collection and he used Butler’s theory, “that gender is performative, socially regulated, and discursively constructed,” and “Carrigan, Connell, and Lee’s assertion that multiple masculinities exist that get contained and reframed by hegemonic masculinity.” (Draper, 2010, p. 360) Along with these methods, he also analyzed editors’ letters in each issue relating to sexual identity and gender and examined interviews the editors gave to the press and newspapers.

You are part of a group of people that the magazine is trying to appeal to. There is a reason Sports Illustrated is more of a man’s magazine and Family Circle is more of a woman’s magazine. Looking at this issue and reading through the magazine, it is evident that the publishers do have a target audience in mind. This visual analysis will discuss who its target audience is and how the reader can tell. Also, the essay will discuss how the magazine makes the advertisements relevant to its audience.

With the growth of magazine popularity, both online and in print, youth around the world are exposed to the ideas of gender expression, identities, and roles. However, with society’s influence, the spread of heteronormative, cisgender, and white ideals have been placed as top priority. After examining men’s fashion magazine, Gentlemen Quarterly, I discovered that much of their magazine revolved around the typical wealthy, white, straight, and able-bodied male. Despite their attempts to branch out to other minority groups, they are unsuccessful in breaking out of their classic audience. Readers of a tabloid are normally less educated and interested in issues that affect them. On the contrary, a broadsheet reader is expected to be more educated, of a higher socio-economic group and take interest in business and international related affairs. Therefore, the layout and language change to suit the reader. The layout is similar in both papers in the sense they both use pictures and columns. However, ‘The Sun’ chooses to put the story on the front-page and presents it on a larger scale. Language is more technical in the broadsheet and has been used only to inform. ‘The Sun’ is biased towards Sarah Payne and her family and uses a less informing tone unlike broadsheets. A particular message is also apparent in ‘The Sun’. In my opinion, both types of newspapers have successfully satisfied their aims.
