“The Capabilities of Music” Music is important because it is capable of a number of health benefits and it helps in terms of physical, emotional, and mental capacity of one’s being. Music is inevitable in our daily lives. It helps us cope up with our daily living. Some people like listening to different genres of music, it may be pop, rock, jazz, or classical music, people still tend to listen to it. According to Harvard Health Publishing (2011), the human brain and nervous system are hard-wired to distinguish music from noise and to respond to rhythm and repetition, tones and tunes. According to Havighurst (2015), the media or technology is one of the reasons why music is being degraded. People tend to think that it is “just” music and think so lowly of it. If you compare the songs currently, from the songs of the 19 hundreds or 18 hundreds, I can say that their songs are much better. Yes, our songs are funky or groovy and hit. But if you look into the meaning of some songs, it’s basically about either love, sex, women, and etc. The songs lack meaning and it’s very disheartening to know that. Music nowadays gives a lot of benefits in terms of health, whether it’s physical, mental, emotional or a specific sickness, music can help cure one’s needs. According to Martino (2014), and Chappel (2015), the benefits of music are as follows. If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.

Music has been around since the very beginning of time. The human body flows in a rhythmic syncopation. Music is used to change one’s mood and to inspire those who open their minds. It has the potential to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. Humans, of every culture and society, function with a type of rhythmic music. As humans, we are hard wired to respond to music (Mannes). The human brain responds to music in such a way that the brain becomes more open to new rhythms, ideas, and values. Music has the power to take over the human body. This makes it easier to overcome conflict and change the ideals of somebody while using music (The Power of Music).
Whether you’re a devoted music enthusiast or you just listen to the radio to pass time, we all listen to music. However, when listening to music, nobody stops to think about what they are doing. Nobody stops to contemplate how the music they are listening to affects them psychologically. We just listen to the music and enjoy ourselves. In fact however, a great deal of research has been done to determine the psychophysiological effects of music. Many studies have been conducted to determine whether music can help people who suffer from psychological and medical disorders, Scholars continually debate whether music can influence behavior, and researchers are attempting to understand what is happening in our brain when we listen to music.
It is true that music has a compact link to our emotions. Music assists people to overcome the bad situations in their life, just like it did for Sonny, the barmaid, or some other people in the Harlem. Music has a tremendous effect on people’s mind because it makes them feel relax and comfortable, especially the soft classical music. It helps distressed people to stay smooth and peaceful. In fact, music is a remarkable way to ease our stress.
In today’s evolving and changing society, many people do not appreciate how extraordinary music truly is. Since the birth of the vinyl record, there are less people who own and are interested in them. Even though vinyl records have recently been making a comeback, they are still not as popular as they once were. People take for granted how easily accessible music is today though in the past it was not as simple. Even though vinyl records may be costly and may not have a large quantity of songs, as time progresses and technology continues to develop, the way that people listen to music degrades their appreciation for music due to easier accessibility, weaker sound in terms of quality, and decaying genres.

Music is one of the few things that has remained constant through the centuries this world has existed. Not only does music provide entertainment, it also has several effects linked to it. Music allows emotions of happiness and sadness to arise. From those emotions, physical effects, negative or positive, can occur. Music has a profound effect on the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical aspects of a person.
Physical activity has been linked to decreasing the risk of developing breast and colon cancers, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, depression, and risk of falls (World Health Organization, 2013). The World Health Organization has outlined a generic thirty minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity five times per week as a standard for acquiring health benefits (2013). Unfortunately, the majority of the population does not attain these minimum physical activity requirements (Johnson & Taylor, 2011). Nowadays, physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality in the world (World Health Organization, 2013). Effective strategies to improve the participation in physical activity are desperately needed (Johnson & Taylor, 2011). The middle-range theory proposed by Murrock and Higgins suggests that music, mood, and movement (MMM) can play a role in effecting participation in and intensity of physical activity and in turn, improve health outcomes (2009). More specifically, there are three theoretical statements that are of importance for this theory.
