Are humans pre-programmed to kill? Is there murderer lurking inside all of us? These are the questions David M. Buss answers in his book, The Murderer Next Door: Why the Mind is Designed to Kill. Is his true crime styled novel evolutionary psychologist, Buss argues that we are all killers in the right situation, or rather the wrong situation. He presents astonishing evidence on the high percentages of people who have either fantasized about killing or would be willing to murder someone if they knew they could get away with it. His work is strictly based on ordinary people. Three main reasons he lays out for why ordinary people murder are sexual rivalry, mating/gene passing, and survival. Each one ties into the other. I will give an example for each. One of the first examples Buss gives is of The Texas Cadet Murder. In the fall of 1991, Diane Zamora and David Graham begin training to become cadets for the air force in Tarrant County, Texas and fell in love. However, there relationship hit a rough patch when Graham cheated on Zamora with fellow cadet Adrianne Jones. In December, Graham told Zamora of the infidelity and she cried in emotional pain. Zamora then convinced Graham to make the ultimate sacrifice for their love, to kill her sexual rival, Adrianne Jones. After the Grahame brutality murdered Jones, people were in absolute shock. Zamora and Graham had never shown any signs of murderous tendencies. They were normal young adults. This is an example of how sexual rivalry can inspire murder. Buss says this relates back to our evolution. Evolutionarily speaking, mate finding was and is extremely important for two reasons: a partner to help you pass on genes and a partner to help protect you and your resources.
