This book is about the process of mummification; there are many aspects of what Egyptians believe what the afterlife is. In Mummies it presents very detailed pictures; some pages are even see-through! It has various amounts of fascinating facts; although, due to the subject matter, it isn't well suited for younger children. Not only is it good for middle schoolers, but also for older too. The book has graphic details and pictures of ennoblement, but the Hall of Two Truths might scare, or upset a younger audience; although, middle schoolers and older would be able to handle this type of content. John Malam is educated in ancient history; he even has a degree in it! Before he became an editor for the U.K publishing companies, he dug up bones
for the Ironbridge George Museum Trust. After that, he became a full-time author. Given his experience throughout his life, one would think he is very fit for the occupation he chose. The information in this book would work well for social studies and science classes eager to learn about the history of Ancient Egypt, or the mummification processes. This book also mentions the Egyptian gods, such as Osiris and how he affected the afterlife. This book is essential for people who are interested in archeology.
The Mummy Case of Paankhenamun has great significant in that it provides us with very fundamental evidence from ancient history. It does not only exhibit a complex form of art, but it also demonstrates the religious practices of ancient Egyptians in association with their beliefs in life after death, as well as their great fascination with immortality. It not only teaches us about the great science of mummification, but it also provides us all with the incredible opportunity to learn about the life of an ancient person.
Ancient Egyptian culture was largely focused on the afterlife. One of their most important deities, Osiris, became the ruler of the Underworld through death. The pharaoh and elite class prepared for their impending deaths throughout their lives. Much of what survives from ancient Egypt today was found in tombs and temples of the dead. When one of the elite died, the process of laying him or her to rest was extensive. Harold Hays explains that “the ritualized process of embalming and mummification is usually stated as lasting seventy days” (Hays 5). "Funeral Procession, Tomb of Pairy" shows two of the processes that Hays details. The first depicted is the procession to the tomb. Pairy’s body would have already been through several processions, mummification, and embalming. This particular procession’s goal is to lead not just the body, but also the spirit into the afterlife. Imagine yourself as a mortician, certified as an embalmer, retort operator, funeral director, and a funeral cosmetologist. You get a call late at night, there’s been a terrible accident and someone has died. You arrive at the hospital and are directed to a small room where the body of the deceased is being held. There’s blood all over the sheets as the doctor and coronary assistant zip up the body bag and inform you the body was badly mangled in a car accident, which is going to make reconstructing the deceased very difficult. Your assistant puts the body on the stretcher and loads it into the hearse while you talk to the wife of the deceased man. She tells you they plan to have a funeral so you give her your card and a reassuring word before leaving the hospital and driving back to the funeral home. Now your job begins, not only will you have to reconstruct this man’s disfigured body, but you must meet with the family, discuss funeral arrangements, and deal with the family’s emotional trauma that comes with losing a loved one. Although working in the funeral business can be emotionally draining, it’s a satisfying feeling to see mourning families able to say goodbye to their loved ones. It is clear that tombs and burial rituals were a key element in the Egyptian society and their way of life as it ties into almost all things they did on a daily basis. Whatever a person’s status was when they were alive followed them into the afterlife. Food and luxury goods were buried with a person so that they could have it in the afterlife. The tombs became a person’s new house after they died. Therefore, making it as nice as possible was really important. Art work and clay models were added to a person’s tomb as material goods needed for the afterlife. They were also seen as decorations that kept the tombs looking nice. For my research paper I decided to revisit an exhibit that I first heard of while having the most exhilarating spring break of doing tourist things with my parents here in DC. The particular exhibit I chose was called, “Eternal Life in Ancient Egypt” located on the second floor of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. I actually had the hardest time finding this exhibit as it was very small (in comparison to the two bordering exhibits about insects and dinosaurs) which I thought was a bit unfair since I feel like there is more to the ancient Egyptian civilization. Nonetheless, I finally found this small exhibit in a corner of the museum. Growing up being one of those kids who had to watch the History Channel instead of Cartoon Network most of the time, I always picked Egypt to be my favorite historical topic. This exhibit however was distinct in the sense that it did not focus on the Sphinx or the great pyramids, the parts I was interested in as a child, but it instead focused on the mummified remains left behind in their near perfect conditions. Although this might not have been my favorite part of ancient Egypt, it did fit perfectly with my assignment for this class. I had always thought mummies where “interesting” though slightly scary at the same time. This is particularly helpful to archaeology because instead of finding a burial where the only thing left are pieces of broken bones, or in better cases a whole skeleton, the remains are exquisitely persevered in all their glory.
