As soon as Muhammad Ali was notified, upset, he declared that he would refuse to serve in the Army and told everyone himself a conscientious objector. He came out saying that the war is against the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and that he was not trying to dodge the draft. He claimed that due to his religion, Muslim, he is not supposed to take part in no wars unless the war has been declared by the Muslim God Allah. With his in mind, Muhammad Ali refused to step forward the first time when his name was called. Due to this he was ultimately committing a felony that was punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $10,000 maximum. According to the book mentioned on the last page, Ali’s example was an inspiration for countless African Americans. In the book Kareem Abdul – Jabbar is quoted saying, “I remember the teachers at my high school didn’t like Ali because he was so anti – establishment and he kind of thumbed his nose at authority and hot away with it. The fact that he was proud to be a Black man and that he had so much talent . . . made some people think that he was dangerous (Citation). According to Kareem Abdul – Jabbar people at the time would started to question African Americans because of how they went against the authority. Furthermore, the book goes on to discuss how Ali inspired Martin Luther King, Jr. During the time period of the Vietnam War, Martin Luther King, Jr. was reluctant to focus on addressing the Vietnam War for a fear of parting away from the Johnson Administration and the administration’s support for civil rights agenda. Additionally, an example of activism comes from the Black Lives Matter Movement that was present through players in the NBA and in College Basketball. The Black Lives Matter Movement was created in the wake of several police brutality events. These events include the killing of Travon Martin and Eric Garner. Jackie Robinson’s ability to successfully integrate his sport set the stage for many others to advocate for an end to segregation in their respective environments. His period of trials and triumphs were significant to changing American perception of the Civil Rights revolution. By becoming the first African-American baseball player to play in the major leagues, he brought down an old misconception that black athletes were inferior to white athletes. Successively, his example would inspire those advocating for their civil rights, he lived out a message of nonviolence similar to the one Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived out. Despite the constant prejudice he faced in his sport, he was able to keep himself composed and never retaliate.
Martin Luther King Jr. is a prominent inspiration to me because he was a passionate man who brought about change to the world around him. He was a strong leader that many people devoutly followed. His ability to gain followers was undeniably amazing. Accordingly, he used his strong leadership skills and passion for equality to bring about change. He was only one man, but he did extraordinary things. He created alternatives in this great nation. His ability to alter people’s minds through frequent speeches and appearances, where he spoke of his aspirations, was very admirable. Dr. King made it clear that all one needs is a driving passion for a worthy cause. Therefore, he had this driving passion, and these things are a part of what made him an effective leader. He was zealous about gaining equality, and he would not let his adversaries deny him of his goal. Dr. King was one leader that utilized his passion to form a better world and overcome his afflictions. ... Luther King Jr. was greatly influenced by the Rosa Parks Scandal, this caused him to create the Montgomery Bus Boycott. For those who may not know, this was a 13-month mass protest. During this protest, laws became disregarded, fights rang out, and many people and officials got hurt. It became an ongoing issue that many saw no end to. State government officials believed it was time to make a change. This eventually resulted in the ending of racist policies. This took time and effort and shows us a remarkable example of a social reform. While this sounds all good and dandy, it wasn’t easy and frankly, it was pretty hard, I mean, think of all the people who had grown up with the understanding that separation of the races was right. What i’m trying to say is, it was difficult to rewrite a way of life, and change minds by viewing the hardships brought upon black people.

Those believing that Muhammad was more of a hero than Jackie Robinson most likely feel that Ali’s action of standing up against the United States government, when he was drafted, was an act of courage and bravery. The main reason why Ali didn 't wish to go to war in Vietnam was because he believed he shouldn 't be fighting for a country that ultimately didn 't support his own people within its own borders.
