In the play Much Ado About Nothing, William Shakespeare explores the concept of lies and deceit. The outcome of the play was based on lies and deceit. To some, lies can be portrayed as harmful, but this play shows otherwise. Many lies are used for good in order to help keep harm away. In this play, some lies are made up, some are true, and some are not lies at all but rather a misunderstanding which turns into deception. Lying is a form of deception, but deception does not always involve lying. Lies can ultimately shape a relationship between people even though lies should never be the foundation of any relationship.
In William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, the theme of lies and deceit is consistent throughout. Although some characters deceive more than others, they all play an important role in the deception of the play. There are various occasions in Twelfth Night where lies and deceit are used, such as through Viola's disguise, Sir Toby's fabrications and the pranks played on certain characters.

There are multiple characters trying to ensnare others in different facades, whether it be for better or for worse. The deception and illusion in the play can either assist the characters or completely shatter the situation, but in both cases, Shakespeare advises us to infer about what we hear or see before we jump to conclusions.

Some say it is a play on the term “noting”, revolving around the theme of all sorts of deceptions by all sorts of appearances (Rossiter 163). In William Shakespeare’s play ‘Much Ado about Nothing’, there are many instances of trickery and deception, which seem to surround the whole of the play.
When initially asked about the morality of lying, it is easy for one to condemn it for being wrong or even corrupt. However, those asked are generally guilty of the crime on a daily basis. In the play “Much Ado About Nothing” both the characters and their actions are concerned with “noting” or visually perceiving the other characters and the situations they find themselves in; ironically these perceptions are usually based on false or misinterpreted information.
