Mrs. Mallard from “The story of an hour” by Kate Chopin, develops her sophisticated, almost insolvable character; however, by deeply analyzing her story, we are able to reveal some critical intimation of who she really is. This short story centers on Mrs. Mallard’s perspective, often symbolized in many different ways by the author. By analyzing these characterization the author directly and indirectly portrays; shown through description, prediction, speech, actions, thoughts, and reactions, we are able to understand her dynamic character traits. “Mrs. Mallard was affiliated with a heart trouble”, this is the first sentence of the whole story. Mallard started off as a wife in deep sorrow with the loss of her husband, however as we progress in the plot, she abruptly corners in to this “demon like” character. Chopin even continues describing her actions “drinking in a very elixir of life”. While her hopes of a freed soul possess her, Mallard herself is unaware of the dangerous situation she is in. The Author also indirectly hints that perhaps Mrs. Mallard was in fact bonded by a broken marriage. Mrs. Mallard expresses that all her moments “spring days, and [the] summer days… would all be her own”. Surprisingly the story shifts towards a positive achievement Mrs. Mallard finally receives. “She [carries] herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory”, as we approach the end, some of Mrs. Mallard’s remaining traits leaks out. Perhaps, with what she speaks of, suggests an image of a wife filled with greed, and also a wife who was once locked down by a marriage. Chopin’s articulation almost makes it sound like Mrs.Mallard wants to possess all the memories, from the past, present, and the future.
