Kaylan Little’s mom, Ms. Covington, called around 2:20 today February 8, 2017. She stated that Kaylan was upset because Mr. McKnight was saying she had a bad attitude, needed to go the alternative school, and was gossiping with other teachers regarding her behavior in the hallway. Kaylan’s mother was concerned with Mr. McKnight’s lack of professionalism. I pulled Kaylan out of her 4th core class which is also Mr. McKight’s class. We talked about her concern regarding Mr. McKnight addressed her. We discussed that she has him 3 times a day and she does not feel like he respects her. We also discussed that there was an incent last year in which Mr. McKnight was accused of using the “n” word and she still has some animosity towards him. …show more content…
She never once mentioned Mr. McKnight using any inappropriate terms during class this year. Since she did have him 3 times (remediation, science, and social studies), I suggest a quick easy move would be to put her in a new remediation group. Mrs. Stokes was in the room. She made that change. After our conversation Kaylan returned back to Mr. McKight’s room without hesitation. I spoke with Mr. McKnight regarding Kaylan after school. He is frustrated with her behavior. He sent her to ISS today because she was arguing with him in class. He did share concerns about her behavior with Mr. LeGrande the ISS teacher. He stated he was not gossiping about her in the hallway with other teachers. He did not mention her going to MLA. The mention of MLA came from Ms. LeGrande when she was discussing consequences if Kaylan choses to continue to disrupt class. Ms. Covington called back around 3:30 and I shared with her that I spoke with Kaylan. I share with her what had transpired in the meeting with Kaylan. I asked her what she believed would be best for Kaylan since she has no animosity toward Mr. McKight. Mom asked if Kaylan could be moved to another teacher. I told mom I would meet with our guidance counselor first thing in the morning and see if we could adjust her schedule since Kaylan was so
At Hazel East High School, the school has a sponsored newspaper called “The Spectrum” that is written and edited by the students. On May of 1983, the high school principal, Robert E. Reynolds, received the edited version of the May 13th edition. Upon inspecting the paper he found two articles that he found “inappropriate.” The two articles contained stories about divorce and teen pregnancy. The article on divorce featured a student who blamed her father’s actions for her parents’ divorce. The following article featured students at Hazelwood East and their experiences as teen parents in high school. Reynolds immediately asked for the two articles to be withheld from that weeks edition. Reynolds had concluded fairness required the father in the divorce article to be informed of the article and given the chance to make any comments. He also stated that changing the names of the girls in the teen pregnancy article may not be sufficient enough to keep them unidentified. Also, the topic is not suitable for younger students. As a result he forbid the two articles from being published. His February 1980 IEP claimed Smith was easily distracted, anxious and impulsive. It was proposed Smith be placed on a trial basis of a half day schedule. The following year when assigned to a full-day program, Smith started having misbehavior issues. The school met with the grandparents (guardians) and it was agreed to reduce Smith’s attendance to half-days with the warning that if his behavior continued, he would be expelled. In November, Smith was suspended for five days after lewd comments were made to another student. The SPC, similar to Doe’s case, extended the suspension indefinitely. Late November, it was protested the actions were almost identical to Doe’s and Smith was allowed to return to the half-day program at A.P.
Kevin has become accustom to his parents bailing him out when he engages in negative behaviors. I would work on the Miller’s cognitions in regards to holding Kevin accountable for his actions. Maybe they believe if they do hold Kevin accountable it would prevent him from “lively and creative” or prevent him from being able to expresses himself out of fear of being punishment. Working with them educating them on strategies and techniques to deter negative behaviors at school. Also, working with them planning and predicting for Kevin push back because he’s not use to be held accountable for his behaviors so there will be push back. In 1992, Christopher McCandless set off on an odyssey into the backcountry of Alaska, an adventure that had proved fatal. After McCandless's corpse was found, Jon Krakauer wrote an article on the story of Chris McCandless, which was released in the January 1993 issue of Outside magazine. The article had received a negative response; several readers criticized McCandless for being foolish and ill-prepared, and showed no sympathy or remorse for his death. McCandless has been referred to as a nut, a kook, and a fool. However, McCandless was not a nonsensical man. In 1996, Jon Krakauer's novel, Into the Wild, was published. The novel uncovers more detail of McCandless's story. Into the Wild rebuts the idea of McCandless being someone who is foolish, and speaks of the many occasions where McCandless has demonstrated great perseverance and determination. The novel also proves the intelligence of McCandless, and brings insight into McCandless's psyche. The following examples will illustrate how McCandless was not a fool, but someone to admire.
The case study on Kevin Miller is very challenging. Kevin Miller is White 5th grade student, and his parent are very supportive. Kevin has a problem with attention span; consequently, he I has been identified as a candidate for Greentree Elementary School Gifted and Talented Program. I will attempt to describe the issues related to Kevin’s moral judgement and self-concept; furthermore, I will make recommendations on his part.
Raymond Carver's short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” leaves the reader feeling as if they have sat down at the table with a bottle of Gin and experienced first hand the effects of alcoholism and depression. In the original version of this story the “Beginners” Carver carefully crafts the many sides of an alcoholic personality developing strong knowable characters. The fundamental personalities are left fairly intact from the original version. It should be noted that the feelings that the reader are left with are due at least partially to the severe editing of the “Beginners” done by his editor and friend Gordon Lish. With this collaboration Carvers personal struggles still shine through but his intent of hope and recover from alcoholism were left mostly on the chopping block. Through many interviews and articles Raymond Carver make clear his personal struggles with alcoholism and how it has had an effect on his writing. INTERVIEWER: Where do your stories come from, then? I'm especially asking about the stories that have something to do with drinking. Carver: “At the very least it's referential. Stories long or short don't just come out of thin air.” (The Paris Review) The inner dialog and downward spiral of an alcoholic is experienced through the interaction between these personalities while discussing the topic of love. When any type of bullying is involved it is imperative for a counselor to be aware of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) letter. This letter states that some cases of bullying may be handled under the federal civil rights statues and regulations, requiring the school to directly handle the harassment (Stone, 2017). The letter gives the school the authority to conduct an investigation so they can determine what the appropriate course of action is needed. As a Professional School Counselor, you must consider all points of confidentiality of the victim by letting both victim and parent know that any outside disclosure concerning the bullying event (i.e. names of perpetrators) will negate the confidentiality between you and them. Susie works as an 8th grade science teacher in a title one school in San Antonio. She teaches co-teach classes which means she works with the students who are intellectually below average and need the extra assistance and extra push. With her, she has another certified teacher, Jenny, who aids her in the classroom. My mom, aside from her co-teacher, has a teaching partner that works in the same department as her, and they coordinate lesson plans and teaching principles. Dennis, her teaching partner, is a diligent worker and helps with preparing power points for him and my mom to utilize. He was addressing that he wants the school board to help him because he feels as if the principal is penalizing his daughter. He mentioned that the principal mentioned that he will penalize the girl because of her lateness. Jonathan is a tenth grade student with multiple disabilities which include: profound mental disability, spastic quadriplegia, and seizure disorder. Jonathan’s mother approached the high school principal, Debbie Young, to request educational placement for Jonathan in the high school. Debbie Young, who also served as a Special Education teacher before she became a principal, denied the request. Young’s decision was based on the severity of Jonathan’s multiple disabilities, his need of a specially trained nurse, and the excessive expense the school would incur to accommodate his medical needs. Due to the above factors, Principal Young believes the high school is not the best placement for Jonathan’s care.

Right now she has a Para that has the student as her main student, but she also cares for two other students. The mom is scared for her daughter and for the other two students safety. One example they gave was that during the fire drill last week, the student seized as all the other students were out of the building and the Para had to help the other students too. Another example is that the student seized when about to enter the pool and she almost smack her head. When they were talking about this topic I really started to think what I would do in the situation. This student seizes everyday the mom says, so that is a huge safety concern. I think she should have one, but at they meeting they were saying that the mom is really going to have to fight for this. Which reminded me of the Dear Collage letter and how the parent has to be the biggest advocator for their child, if they want it done right. In the case study with Principal Miller, he had to make a decision to change the instruction program or to keep it. There was a group of parents that wanted students grouped by their ability. The other group of parents wanted the instruction to stay the same. Principal Miller was new to the school and had very little knowledge of the school. This leaves some critical issues that Principal Miller has to think about while he made his choice. He needed to make sure that the children were getting the best education that he can provide as the leader in the school. He also needs to think about the other educators in the building and how they would feel about the grouping. If Mr. Miller changes any instruction it needs to be understood by all of the teachers and staff in the building. Mr. Miller should consider all of the parents, keep an open dialogue with them, and report data for and against the change and finally make the decision.
This makes me think that Kennedy is experiencing problems outside of the classroom, however they are manifesting inside of the classroom. My first concern would be for the safety of Kennedy.I would not jump to conclusions that her problems stems from familial problems due to the disconnection of the phone line, it could be a coincidence of her parents phone number to be disconnected. Kennedy's classroom behavioral concerns could emerge from household concerns, recent loss of a love one, environmental concerns, bullying, etc and I would not want to approach the situation without bias. Yet, I do believe that Kennedy is having a crisis that needs to be addressed. My reason being is that Kennedy is having a hard time focusing in class, she is
