The central figure of the novel , Heart of Darkness is Mr Kurtz .
right from the end of first part till the end of the book in the
third part , Mr Kurtz is talked about by almost everyone .
Marlow had heard about Mr Kurtz on the continent but the first
tangible mention of his name came in while he was converting
with the manager of the central station . The manager had a
feeling of jealously for Mr Kurtz for he thought that Mr Kurtz
might one day supersede him and rise to the topmost position in
the company .
Marlow , and from him the reader hear all sorts of thing about
Mr Kurtz right from the beginning of the novel but his personal
appearance in the narrative comes quite late .
Kurtz , like Marlow , can be situated within a larger tradition .
Kurtz resembles the archetypal "evil genius": the highly gifted
but ultimately degenerate individual whose fall is the stuff
of legend . Kurtz is related to figures like Faustus , Satan in
Milton's Paradise lost , Moby - Dick's Ahab , and Wuthering
Height' s Health cliff . like these character, he is significant
both for his style and eloquence and for his grandiose, almost
megalomaniacal scheming In a world of mundanely malicious
men and "flabby devils" attracting enough attention to be worthy
of damnation is indeed something . Kurtz can be criticized :
style entirely overrules substance , providing a justification for
amorality and evil .
In fact , it can be argued that style does not just override
substance but actually masks the fact that Kurtz is utterly
lacking in substance . Marlow refers to Kurtz as "hollow
more than once . this could be taken negatively , to mean that
Kurtz's is not worthy of contemplation . however , it also poi...

Towards the end Mr Kurtz perhaps become morally wiser .
Marlow seems to be full of admiration for Kurtz towards the
close of the book .He remains with Kurtz to his last moments .
After Kurtz's Death , he comes back to London where he stays
sick for sometime and then ultimately and not to any agent or
emissary .
Thus we are made to realise that Kurtz is a highly complex
character who gradually emerges as the over-arching figure and
it is through him that reader become aware of the basic situation
of life . in this way, towards the end Kurtz even excels over the
protagonist precisely due to the fact that it is through Kurtz that
the reader become aware of the hypocrisy of the whole project
of colonisation and its various inherent evil and malevolence.
Thus ,the title , Heart Of Darkness , get completely justified .

Many works of literature not readily identified with the mystery or detective story genre nonetheless involve the investigation of a mystery. Sometimes finding out the answer of the mystery can illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole. This is present in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. The mystery in this novella is about a character named Kurtz.

The book finishes with the letter Jekyll wrote for Utterson being presented to us as though he is reading it. Utterson is to rejoin Poole in the house at the stroke of midnight, no later, in order to call the police and inform them of the murder. We will start the chapter three weeks after the discovery of the corps.
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.

The main character in Conrad's novel, Heart of Darkness, isKurtz. Kurtz no longer obeys the authority of his superiors who believe that he has become too extreme and has come to employ "unsound methods" (Coppola, 1979; Longman, 2000). Marlow is sent to retrieve Kurtz from the evil influences in the Congo, and a wild journey on a tainted river ensues. Along the way, Marlow learns about the real Kurtz and finds himself identifying with and becoming dangerously fond of the man.
