Mozart’s funeral was depicted in the movie, as if he was a pauper. Is there any basis for this fact? What was the date he died? Is there controversy over this “fact”? What did he reportedly die of? Was this type of funeral normal during this period of history? Is he still buried in this particular location? What was it about Mozart’s lifestyle that may have led to his death? Was he, himself the cause or were there societal influences? There is basis for the fact of Mozart being a pauper, for he and Constanze’s extravagant lifestyle, trying to live in the footsteps of their aristocratic European friends, was there decline financially. They simply could not compete, as seen in the film and found on biography.com, Mozart became desperate and “he figured that the best way to attain a more stable and lucrative income would be through court appointment. However, this wouldn’t be easy with the court’s musical preference bent toward Italian composers and the influence of Kapellmeister Antonio Salieri.” (Mozart, 2017) This line of work, with the demoralizing influence of Salieri out of jealousy, became too overwhelming stressful for Amadeus, especially with the impact of his financial disparity and alcoholism on top of it all. Of what the actual cause of his death was never exactly determined, the records lists that the cause was miliary fever. Through the death of Mozart have arisen many different hypotheses of what actually killed him, such as rheumatic fever, or as depicted in the film “Peter Shaffers Amadeus”, Salieri poisoning him. His funeral drew few mourners and Mozart was buried in a common grave, which was very custom during the time period, for only aristocrats and noble figures were given marked graves and public services.
