Depending of the tastes of the market place, cost of production and names attached; a film can be a gold mine or a sinking ship. Based on the production company or private film investor behind a film can determines the distribution and marketing efforts. Budgets can determine if a film runs the national film festival circuit or regional local colleges to generate interest, none at all. Most audiences are use to seeing those cool production company animations at the beginning of a film. Big studio films have the power to hire major actors and directors but the advantage independent films have is the low cost. If an independent film produced at a lower budget gets critical acclaim in festivals it could reap the benefits of a larger profit margin. A great example of this is “The Blair Witch Project”; the movie was produced at $22,500 and grossed $250 million. “The Blair Witch Project” is a rare case, but proves that content and production can garner bigger profits if a film is produced well. While big studios have an advantage in buying airtime for film trailers, tours of leading actors and the cost of film festivals circuits; independent film makers have the advantage of artistic merit and lower production costs. With the 10 year forecasting for films and subsequent release to cable, dvd and streaming services; studio films have more pressure to pay investors
Movies today are extremely expensive to make and are typically financed through either film studio contracts or from investors willing to take a risk. In order to be successful, movies need to be marketed and distributed either under contract by the film studios or by companies that specialize in such services. The aspects of financing, marketing and distribution of films have changed between the studio and independent systems over the years as the evolution of the film industry took place.
Most people are likely to relate Hollywood with money. If a person lives in the Hollywood area, people assume she or he is probably rich. If she or he is a Hollywood movie star, the person probably makes a lot of money. Therefore, to follow that line of thought, when Hollywood producers make a movie, they make it just for money.
