Leonardo DiCaprio plays a mentally impaired boy with a caring brother, who always took care of his brother until the love of his life came to town, proposing the essential question: What is a boy willing to sacrifice in order to be with the one he loves? Johnny Deep plays Gilbert Grape whose father left when he was little, causing his mother to become depressed and never leave the house again. Gilbert referees to her as a “beached whale” because she has gained so much weight. One afternoon a silver camper had engine trouble, forcing them to stay in town for a few weeks until it is fixed...

In the great movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, directed by Lasse Hallstrom, there is a great variety of things eating Gilbert. Gilbert is a young man who feels as if the weight of the world is on his shoulders and feels trapped in a life he can’t escape, no matter how hard he tries. All of Gilbert’s emotional problems are the effects of his mother, she is an overweight-depressed woman who puts a lot of guilt, anger, and sadness on Gilbert, which in return makes Gilbert feel despair, pressured, depressed, and trapped.
Fried Green Tomatoes, a story about something or whatever, regarding friendship, and what not, somewhere in a southern American small town, whilst focusing on the lives of four women of the past and present is a tale nonetheless that just so happens to exemplify many elements of southern gothic literature. After watching the movie “What’s eating Gilbert Grape” it focuses more on Gilbert Grape than any other characters in the movie. Gilbert Grape is a young man who resides in a small community called Endora. Gilbert at the beginning of the movie states “Describing Endora is like dancing to no music”. Gilbert’s youngest brother Arnie is soon to be 18 years old and has a developmental disability that never was disclosed in the movie. Furthermore, Bonnie Gilbert’s mother has been locked in her own home since her husband committed suicide seven years ago. Moreover, Bonnie is at the stage of stagnation. She is over-weighted and doesn’t think of doing anything for herself or for any of her children. Therefore, leaving Gilbert with the full responsibility of caring for his family especially Arnie.

The film “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” can be seen as a somewhat of a tragic story because of the death that occurs in it. What the author really wants you to recognize is that sometimes tragedy can create a new opportunity for someone, because that tragedy could have been what was blocking your own identity. This film gives insight to the life of an American family who has their issues, but somehow seem to make it all work in their eyes.

In the autobiography, Obama entails on the beginning journey of his life from early childhood to young adulthood. The novel begins with him finding out from his aunt that his father has passed away in Nairobi. Obama’s father left him and his mother when he was only 2 years old. Obama then talks about the family he grew up with, his mother and grandparents, and the racism they dealt with at a time when few accepted interracial relations and even more so marriages. He recalls being made fun of as a young child when other kids would make monkey noises when it was discovered his father was from Kenya. He then moves to Indonesia when his mother remarries, but then at 10 years old moves back to Hawaii where he spent his early childhood. It was with his grandparents that he developed much of his character and learned how strongly education was emphasized in his family. Obama also talks about how fascinated he was with by his father. As he grows a bit older into adolescence, Obama learns more about race relations and reads the book Heart of Darkness. This book helps him to see how white people look at black people, as a white man wrote the book talking about black people. In 1996, Chuck Palahniuk released his best known Novel; Fight Club. In 1999, The award winning novel was adapted to film. Palahniuk is know for his unique, and sometimes dark writing. The unnamed main character works in the liability department of a major (also nameless) car company. He fly’s all around the country to investigate car accidents and other problems his company’s cars may have. He is the one who determines whether or not a recall is necessary. Necessary as in, if it’s going to cost the company more money to do a recall or settle out of court with the family’s that their defective cars have killed or injured. He meets an intriguing stranger on the way home from one of his business trips. They end up developing an underground Fight Club. So how does the film compare to Chuck’s novel ?

In The Fall of the House of Usher, Edgar Allan Poe writes of a sickly brother and sister that live in an old estate, and a narrator’s account of the Ushers’ final days. The story is scary on two different levels. The first and most obvious that is noticed just by reading on the surface is the creepy atmosphere of the house and death of the main characters. Poe makes this level of scariness very accessible by the diction and imagery that he uses. The second level of scariness is the psychological aspect of the story. The themes of isolation, madness, and fear become terrifying because they are able to transcend the story; they are real, and they could quite possibly affect us.
