The “GIDEON’S ARMY” film documentary follows the personal stories of Travis Williams, Brandy Alexander and June Hardwick, three young public defenders who struggle against extensive working hours, little wage and awe-inspiring caseloads so common that even the most dedicated in the profession frequently give up in their first year of labor. From watching this film it has come to fruition in my mind that only a select few can do what these young men and women put up with on a weekly basis. In the film all three public defenders attempt to provide high quality representation despite the overwhelming odds against them. They all have from top to bottom student loan debt which causes an extraordinary amount of stress to them and other public defenders in the profession. This film was also very depressing. Just from watching this film for a couple of minutes one can get very down on themselves. By the time I was done observing it I had to turn on a more motivational show because the film was really that disheartening. The Stakes were incredibly high for the defendants which faced some of t...

A plea bargain is compliance between a prosecutor and defendant in which the accused offender agrees to plead guilty in return for some compromise from the prosecutor. The New Jim Crow, explains how most Americans have no clue on how common it is for people to be prosecuted without proper legal representation and are sentenced to jail when innocent out of fear. Tens of thousands of poor people go to jail every year without ever talking to a lawyer that could possibly help them. Over four decades ago, the American Supreme Court ruled that low-income people who are accused of serious crimes are entitled to council, but thousands of people are processed through America’s courts annually with a low resource lawyer, or no lawyer at all. Sometimes
Johnny’s experience as an attorney falls far short of being the legal crusader that he envisioned for himself. Rather, it is quite short-lived . His legal career ends abruptly when his unpreparedness for an easy trial against a wealthy white woman causes him to lose the case for his client. Upon his hu...
Authors Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld founded the innocence project at a law school in New York City, which has assisted in the exoneration of an astonishing number of innocent individuals. As legal aid lawyers, they blithely engaged in conflicts that implicated
people in these 21st century society wonder, “When is Justice to be done?” For district attorneys,
Plea bargains are highly prevalent in the popular television series Law and Order. If a random episode is chosen, there is a high chance that lawyers in the show have offered a plea bargain. While many people would believe that media skews the public’s understanding of how often plea bargains occur, however, this is actually an appropriate representation. According to Heumann, approximately 10% of criminal cases actually continue on to trial (Heumann, 1975). Similarly, as stated by Menkel-Meadow, plea bargains are the reason why there may be congestion in the courts, but a low number of criminals are actually jailed (Menkel-Meadow, 2005).
A genre of movie that many people enjoy seeing a war films, representations of past conflicts on the big screens of Hollywood. One film that really drives into the heart of what it was like to actually be in the Pacific Theater of war from the Axis perspective; Letters From Iwo Jima is a film the captivates its audience is an emotional story, while entertaining the action lovers with epic battle scenes.“I’ll always be in front of you.” One of the many memorable lines from the movie shows the bravery and courage that forced difficult battles. Just due to the fact that hardly no movies are made to represent what the Japanese or Germans felt or thought during the war; the hardships they endured and the difficult choices they had to make, made this one an absolute keeper. Letters From Iwo Jima, showing historical accuracy through setting, drama, costume, different moral stances, and the characters people encounter through the story; creates an amazing experience for the viewer and takes that person on a journey through the hardships at Iwo Jima.

Working for the Washington, D.C. Public Defender’s Office in the fall of 1995, I witnessed first hand the inadequacies of our legal system with respect to juvenile offenders. I believe that juvenile justice is a worthwhile topic because of its relevance to every member of American society. If we do not help children in trouble today, they will not have the capacity to be functi...
I was told that my desire to enter the field of public interest would wane after my first year of community service. On the contrary, the realization of the power which a lawyer possesses has reinforced my desire to enter this arena. An advocate's work can have far reaching consequences. This is clearly true in public interest law, where the purpose is not simply to correct a wrong done in the past between two parties, but to alter the disparate treatment of an often under-represented class.
Movie Review: We Were Soldiers! We all like to take time out and sit down with our loved ones, and watch a heart touching movie every once in a while. What we don't do is actually take time to really focus and understand completely what the point of the movie is, or what it is trying to get across to the audience. I was able to take time and sit down, and enjoy and evaluate the movie, "We Were Soldiers.

Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest leaders of our time. In the movie Invictus, the devotion and love he had for the South African people is exemplified. The movie was named after a Victorian poem that brought President Mandela strength while in prison. The meaning of Invictus is “Undefeated”, a perfect fit for this movie. The opening scene of the movie shows President Mandela being freed from jail and driving past a field of young boys playing soccer. All the boys start chanting the Presidents name and running to the fences to get a better look. This is the first scene, and an obvious show of support and following for Mr. Mandela. Throughout the movie there are many different styles and approaches of leadership shown. Not only is President
Law is of fundamental importance to our country, as well as shaping our modern evolving society. I felt that doing a Law degree can be both satisfying and help society in the future by helping political refugees and provide legal support for people who can’t afford it. The case of Dwaine George was sentence to life in imprison for murder. However, a team of students who were in the Innocence project found new evidence supporting that he was innocent. I think the Innocence Project is very meaningful as it can make a significant di...
