These ethical codes did not appear overnight and were often created in response to a traumatic unethical study. Historically, ethics in medicine have wavered, bordering a gray area which, at times, caused more harm than good. Prior to the establishment of ethical laws and guidelines currently in place today, medical research was often conducted in ways which directly harmed participants (Resnik & Hofweber, 2023). Current guidelines and the help of IRBs assure safety of human and animal subjects in medical research (Polit & Beck, 2013). Several procedures exist to safeguard participants, including risk/benefit assessment, participant authorization of informed consent, confidentiality procedures, and procedures for vulnerable group participants (Polit & Beck, 2013). Below, an analysis of the movie Capote is conducted to compare Truman Capote?s interview methods with ethical standards from the Institutional Review Board today and relate them to the Benedictine Values and the ANAs Code of Ethics. This movie is based on a true story following the events of the creation of Truman Capote?s book In Cold Blood (Bennett, 2005).
