The MADD campaign (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) encourages young people to prevent drunk driving from occurring. Often times when we glance at the news, we’re constantly hearing about someone who has been killed in a car accident only because the driver was incapable of his or her actions and decided to take a risk on that choice without realizing that something could happen. The types of behavior individuals expand to society dictates how others might interact with one another. The MADD campaign should encourage showing the risks of driving under the influence in person instead on just social media alone because they should have the advantage of living in a fair and safe environment with regulations that can benefit them towards the future.
Social problems that are directly changed by a structural change of behavior can target the attention of young audiences. Once young people in the world recognize something that should be improved, chances are they are going to enact social

change to happen. As we all know, Epstein evaluated different approaches of two programs, LoveLife and Uganda, to gain a close view of how effective the benefits they were providing to the young people in South Africa were and to determine if they were trustworthy. According to Epstein, she defined “the cool effect” as “the influence that a small number of opinion leaders can have on the norms and behavior of large numbers of their peers.” (155) The MADD campaign balances “the cool effect” by displaying young audiences media coverage so they can view the reality behind drunk driving and teaching them how to care for one another in society. If there is nothing to visualize or consider about, then more lives are going to be placed in jeopardy. As the MADD campaign is concerned, on their website, they share stories of victims that were involved in drunk driving incidents. One of the images they displayed was an incident on July 9, 2011 when a seven year old girl, Xitclalli “Chilli” Vaszquez was injured by a drunk driver after spending the day at the mall and developed paralysis in parts of her body. Therefore, she has to sit in a wheelchair. This image sets an example of direct approach and the cool effect because when young audiences view the image and comprehends her story, they are going to be in complete shock because now they will have an idea of what they should do and what they shouldn’t do. They are going to develop so much fear and devastation that they might want to limit anything they do outside in the world because they know there are loved ones that are looking out for them, such as their families and friends. Furthermore, the MADD campaign have a mission of discouraging young people from taking action on making choices that leads to risky behavior based on the direct and indirect information presented. This situation causes them to be harmed in many ways. The MADD campaign can encourage young people to become a participant in social activism in various ways. They need to face the fact that they should focus on the community rather than just certain individuals alone. As we all know, in Vaid’s essay, she was stating how she became involved in different groups to create a more fair society for individuals in order for them to be treated equal. According to Vaid, “The only reason big changes happen is when people like you and me decide to fight for things to change, when we take action to make things different.” (431) There are times when people just expect to receive anything they want instead of taking action about it or giving credit. People can’t assume that anything will eventually end up better if they don’t at least attempt to put in effort into something. Imagine the melancholy some families have to go through just because their loved ones were harmed into a situation that could’ve been solved in a quick manner. In one of the MADD campaign’s videos, the executive director, Abigal Nickell, was mentioning on screen about how she was involved with the Honolulu Police Department to end drunk driving in order to reduce car accidents.
The team put on an event called “Tie One On for Safety” where drivers tie on a ribbon onto to their car to encourage themselves to be responsible for the choices that they are making whenever dealing with this situations. She basically choose to put on this event around holiday season only because people tend to get excessively excited about seeing who they want to see and having the free time to throw parties they want that they may not be considerate about how safe their decisions are. Around the nighttime, the Honolulu Police officers would set out road blockers to prevent not only the safety on the road, but to monitor the way people drive. Anyone can state that they are a safe driver when in reality anything unexpected can happen in one blink of an
eye. Moreover, the MADD campaign is willing to increase more volunteers and staff in order for their plans to become effective. When teamwork is present, more tasks are able to get done in a fast pace rather than just leaving it all up to one person alone to do. Otherwise, nothing will ever get done and their campaign won’t receive any support and consider it useless. According to Vaid, “Social activism is all about optimism, even when you lose.” (431) Once people gain the confidence of adjusting certain changes into something, chances are peoples’ lives will become less complicated. People should become participants in certain organizations or groups as Vaid stated that she did. It could cause other people around the world to explore the issue more seriously than they might have done previously. They could change their minds and distinguish habits that they should change and the choices that may seem tolerable should just remain in its position. On the MADD campaign’s Youtube channel, there was a video they posted of an event called “Walk Like MADD”, which is a walk-a-thon event across the United States that volunteers and sponsors can participate in order to not only allow individuals to remain living in a healthy lifestyle, but also to help the MADD campaign put an end to drunk driving. As I was viewing the video, there were scenes of people hugging and feeling sorrow for one another, waving hands in the air as they were walking in a group, and cheering for the best that can happen. In the video, they were stating how people can walk while remembering a life that was a lost or can walk with hope that a life can be saved soon. They also mentioned that no matter how fast or slow the pace of the walking is, you can lead others towards the right direction of making appropriate choices. Once people watch the video, they might jump into action and spread the word, whether if it applies to them or not. As we all know, in Savage’s essay, According to Savage, “You can come out, you can move away, and maybe, if the damage we’ve done isn’t too severe, you can recover and build a life for yourself.” (429) The best technique that can prevent drunk driving from happening is being more connected to people around their community. The fact that some people don’t even keep in contact with their neighbors about a problem that they are unknown about is a serious issue because it will only make things worse. It wouldn’t be solved in the proper manner. If no individual is receiving some sort of treatment to benefit their needs, then they can end up living in an unhealthy lifestyle and experience more fatal accidents that can become more life threatening to them. In order for drunk driving to be prevented, young people should escape from discussions that others may be having that can lead them to the wrong direction. If the MADD campaign just only focused on brainstorming prevention methods without showing what people face with while driving under the influence, then people are not going to be willing to change their attitudes and continue their same behavior.
A Modest Proposal For Making Driving More Entertaining, While Creating The Same Risks For Everyone On The Road
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is an organization that strives to stop drinking and driving, supports the victims of this crime and attempt to prevent underage drinking. This determined group of people is also known for the support that they give to the families of the victims. The websites of this organization are key in guiding those interested in helping or being helped. The websites are a great way to get involved in achieving their cause and learning more about MADD. Without the main website of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, some victims would go unsupported because of the lack of audiences.
Since MADD has been in existence there has been a 43% decline in alcohol related traffic fatalities (MADD stats and resources homepage). It has consistently been providing statistics on excessive drinking, complete drunk driving research, the effects of underage drinking, laws regarding alcohol, and current news stories. MADD is not just advertised on the television and library, but has continuously been able to reach the public through the use of the internet. The website www.madd.org has reached thousands of people to spread the word of the harmful effects of alcohol abuse whether the consumer is underage or not. The large load of ...
The facts are plain and simple, that alcohol and driving do not mix. About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol related crash at some time in their lives. Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable. To curb this national travesty, concerned Americans need to examine the problems, the effects, and the solutions to drunk driving. First of all, America has had a problem with drunk driving since Ford perfected the assembly line. Alcoholism is a problem in and of itself, but combined with driving can have a wide range of effects. The consequences of this reckless behavior can include a first time DUI or licenses suspension; a small fender bender, or worst of all a deadly crash. Most drivers that have only one or two drinks feel fine, and assume they are in control, which is irresponsible and dangerous. Alcohol is a depressant that slows down the body's ability to react and impairs judgment. To drive well, you need to be able to have a quick reaction time to avoid accidents. Unfortunately, people continue to drink and drive. However,...
Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous. Those who drink and drive tend to have an increased risk of car accidents, highway injuries, and vehicular fatalities. However, there are countless ways to prevent drunk driving. Professor David J. Hanson at the sociology department at the State University of New York states that “designated drivers have saved nearly 50,000 lives and spared many more thousands of people from suffering injury from drunk driving. It is a proven fact that almost 30 people in the US die every day in a motor vehicle accident involving a driver impaired by alcohol.” Every accident caused by drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable.
There is knocking at a door late at night, and there a policeman standing at the door with information that a family member was in an accident that involved a drunk driver. This is one of those things people hear and believe that it will not happen, but it happens every day. Every 40 minutes, someone in the U.S. is killed by a drunk driver and in 2008, in Montana, 40 percent of all traffic fatalities involved DUIs (“Drunk Driving” 1). Drunk Driving affects everyone and people in Montana should look at what other states do to find ways to make the laws tougher and more enforced.
Drunk driving is an issue that effects many people across our nation. People do not realize the affects alcohol can have on the body and mind that slow decision making while driving. This issue begins in the home. Children see their parents, or other adults figures, have a beer or a cocktail and get in the car. Thus, making it seem like it is acceptable to drink and drive. “One in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime” (MADD).
Drunk driving is a problem that we hear about every day and it is something that effects everyone, but it only becomes real when it affects us directly. What we don’t know is when a problem like drunk driving will become “real” for us. Drunk driving is an issue that has taken a toll on our country and should be stopped. Drunk driving has been an increasing problem for many years. It effects not only the driver but all of society. The good thing is there are many ways the percentage of drunk drivers can be reduced. Although many people believe drunk driving doesn't affect them because they don't drink and drive, it is something that affects the whole community.
Drunk driving is a completely needless crime due to it not being obligatory and completely recreational. According to the DMV, every 53 minutes, someone is killed by a drunk driver and every 90 seconds, someone is injured. That totals to about 350k people affected physically by someone driving under influence. That also doesn’t include the families affected by the fatalities or injuries. Almost one out of every three traffic deaths involves drunk driving and one in three people will be involved in a drunken driving crash in their lifetime. Some may believe that driving “tipsy” is not as ba...
Driving under the influence is one of the most common and dangerous situations in which anyone can be or be placed. Drinking and driving is a serious offence that can cause someone to be physically harm or even killed. Not only are you putting yourself at risk but you are also risking the lives of passengers in the car as well as any other car and occupants sharing the road with you. Many people believe that increasing fines for drunk driving offenders will play a compelling role in cutting down the occurrences of driving under the influence. However, while harsher DUI laws will look effective on paper, they will not make a significant step in the fight against drunk driving. Although there is a law enforced for drinking and driving in the
Drunk driving accidents are the number one killer of adolescents (Teenagers and peer pressures. (n.d.). Retrieved November 1, 2013, from). Mixing drinking while driving can be deadly. Teenage drunk driving accidents not only affect the person drinking while driving, but it also can kill or harm others (Alcohol problems and solutions. (n.d.). Retrieved November 1, 2013, from) (Teen drinking and driving. (n.d.). Retrieved November 1, 2013, from) . Every single accident provoked by drinking and driving could have been prevented. If underage drinking is illegal, why do young people do it ? Teenagers usually are influenced by their elders (Alcohol problems and solutions. (n.d.). Retrieved November 1, 2013, from). In the United States, one out of ten 12 through 14 year olds have tried alcohol and continue to do so on a regular basis . There is a more than fifty percent of probability that young adults that have tried alcohol at a younger age may become alcoholics in the near future (Alcohol fatalities. (n.d.). Retrieved November 1, 2013, from). So, why do teenagers take so many risks with their health and behind the wheel? The answer is simple teen drivers tend to think they are invincible and more needs to be done to educate teens on the dangers of drinking and driving.
The reason why we chose to do this project is because many students or minors that drive go out on the weekends and drink. Even though many of these people don’t get drunk, they drink to the point where they are buzzed and even that is bad, because they are not fully aware of what’s happening on the road so that is already a mistake they made and someone’s life they’re putting at danger.
Many people in the United States enjoy a drink of their favorite alcoholic beverage. It could be a nice ice cold beer after a hard day of work or going to the bar and enjoying a few shots or mixed drinks with friends. Drinking alcohol is a common way to mingle with friends and take the edge off a difficult day. However, there are dangers involved with alcohol since it does dampen the body’s ability to cope with new information. Alcohol becomes a poison to the body when consumed in large quantities. The biggest danger is not to the driver after they become inebriated, but comes to anyone the drunk driver comes in contact with. A sober person can be dangerous just by being distracted, but a drunk driver’s ability to cope with changing situations and distractions is one of the biggest hazards on today’s roads. Some individuals believe that they are not as impaired as what they are led to believe from government ads and the many videos that show what can happen to someone who is drinking and driving. Although, there are many policies in place to advocate against drunk driving, there are those who would endanger themselves and others with their thoughtless actions when they jump into the driver’s seat of a vehicle. Drinking and driving should never be combined because a person who has been drinking does not have the ability to use all mental faculties unimpaired, many people have been killed, injured, or psychologically hurt by a drunk driver, many men and women do not know the difference weight and gender have on the body’s ability to process alcohol, and the financial and legal trouble that is awaiting for those convicted by a DUI.
“The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status, or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we all believe that we are above-average drivers” -Dave Barry, comedian. The number of accidents over the last ten years have drastically increased, drivers are paying less attention to the road itself. Many individuals behind the wheel of a car believe that their driving does not affect the road conditions, however it always will. The driving habits of today are catastrophic due to the reasoning that the driving will affect other lives through reckless or distracted driving, and disobeying traffic laws.
...in managing the nature as Hunter Thompson, an American author once quoted that ‘politics is the art of controlling your youth environment’. Specifically, ministers should initiate the practice of being kind indeed by exposing their own daily applications. In varsities, sagacious professors shall necessitate noble practices such as speak nicely, etiquette, manner, and politeness. Teachers in school also included in implementing moral values among youth. Carl Jung, popular psychologist, through his research has stated that youth are more attentive to acts rather than works. So, educationalists have to pursue success in educating youth through acts, for they are the future leaders of the world. Lastly, the teenagers themselves should take an action in changing their attitude and apply more good values in themselves. They can choose what they want to be in the future.
