Chicago in the 1920’s was known to be a town of relentless parties, alcohol, and violence filled streets. The mastermind pulling the strings was the world’s most notorious gangster, Al Capone, whom utilized the teachings of Frankie Yale and Johnny Torrio to become the most powerful man in the underworld. He was a man of raw brutality and wits, paying off anyone willing to help him grow in power, and kill off anyone who wouldn’t. Al Capone was not like any ordinary criminal, he set out to make the public love him as a person, yet he considered killing to be a part of business. To this day whether or not Capone was a criminal mastermind or robinhood is debatable. What stands firmly is that the Roaring Twenty’s wild demeanor is mainly at fault for shaping Al Capone into who he was, and the construction of the powerful Capone Syndicate, because jobs were scares and organized crime, although dangerous, provided a steady income.
Alphonse “Al” Gabriel Capone was born in 1899 Brooklyn, New York, into a family of Italian immigrants. His father, Gabrielle Capone, was a respected barber and his mother, Teresina Raiola, a seamstress. Both moved to America from Naples with big dreams, but they only found hardship in Brooklyn. While living in Brooklyn, Teresina gave birth to nine children; Vincenzo, Raffaele, Salvatore, Erminio, Umberto, Matthew, Rose, Mafalda, and lastly Alfonso Capone.
.
Times were hard and living in a crime filled navy yard district, Al Capone at an early age began living the life of a criminal. Al Capone joined his first gang at the age of five, the Brooklyn Rippers, in 1904. This is where Al Capone’s true colors began to shine through, as he and the Brooklyn Rippers engaged in small crimes; such as stealing cigar...

With no reason to stay in Chicago, Capone and his family decide to move to Miami, Florida to retire where he would spend the remainder of his life. Al Capone, not the typical rags to riches stories that are in movies. When people talk of being in the right place at the right time, this is one of those delicate situations. Where a man growing up in the 1920’s was exposed to the streets at an early age, and turned to crime because it proved to pay off well. Although Al Capone did have a strong mentality to succeed and would most likely have been the CEO of a big corporation in today’s society, the 1920’s and the prohibition era basically laid out a path for Al Capone to follow into success.
The murders he committed showcased the power he had, and being convicted of tax evasion seemed like a joke. Although Al Capone was a ruthless gangster, there was a side to him that many still don’t know about; a kinder side. Al Capone’s family came with a wave of other Italian immigrants that migrated to the United States in the 1800’s. Most immigrants in that time were living in poverty and in very urban areas. Capone’s family lived in the heart of Brooklyn, but his father was a successful barber, which allowed them a slightly better lifestyle than most.
Gangster Al Capone played a significant role during the Prohibition era by revolutionizing whiskey bootlegging, becoming America’s most notorious mobster by controlling his business through manipulation and fear, and paving a pathway that many crime organizations follow today. Al “Scarface” Capone was born in a poor Brooklyn tenement on January 17th, 1899 to Theresa and Gabriele Capone, who had immigrated from Italy. Not only did Al Capone play an infamous role within his time period, but he also left a lasting legacy behind him. His lifestyle proved to have a vital impact on the justice system and organized crime scene of today.
The gangsters we know and love today are much different from what they were 40 years ago. From the way they talked, dressed, and went about their business, the idea of a gangster has changed a lot. But they have one thing in common and this is the fact that they both had and have a huge impact on our society. One gangster in particular, Henry Hill, contributed to a huge turning point in the methods of American criminals. Henry Hill’s accomplishments as a mobster and an FBI informant helped change the ways of organized crime and how the government tried to stop them.
Alphonse Gabriel Capone was the most notorious bootlegger in American History. He was born on January 17, 1899 and died of a heart attack on January 25, 1947. Capone grew up in Brooklyn and became a member of the Five Points Gang. During a street fight he had received a scar on his face that gave him the nickname “Scarface”. Capone quickly moves up the ranks in the mafia world, often noticed for his toughness, in 1919 he grabbed the attention of mobster John Torrio of Chicago. Capone was promoted to bodyguard of the mob boss James Colosimo. When Capone moved to Chicago, bootlegging was just starting to blow up. These bootleggers pounced on the opportunity to completely control the business of making, importing, and distributing alcohol and all alcohol products. Alcohol wasn't the only flourishing industry for the the mob, they also did trade in
People are often remembered for being overly successful, extremely talented, or insanely wealthy; but there are exceptions to every rule. Being a fearless outlaw is not the ideal way to gain fame, but John Dillinger managed to do so. Dillinger’s fearless charisma, led him to go above and beyond to provoke law enforcement. Not many criminals have succeeded in the way John Dillinger did during the 1920s and 30s. He managed to put society in awe due to his obstreperous acts of rebellion. Being one of the most infamous criminals from his time, Dillinger had a huge influence on crime, and has greatly impacted gangsters all over the country.
Al Capone Thesis: From racketeering, bootlegging, and brotheling, Alphonse Capone is one of the most well known and influential gangsters in history. Al Capone, born to Gabriele and Teresina Capone, was born in Brooklyn, New York. At age 5 he starrted school at Public School no.7 on Adams street. Al’s school had outbreaks of violence. Male Students engaged in fist fights with female teachers.
...s. Was Capone fully to blame for the violence that plagued his life? Or was he adapting to the times in which he lived? Maybe he was a man who believed in self-defense in a cruel time where he was just as likely to be killed by an opposing bootlegger. In several interviews, he spoke of peace. He asked for peace from other men that challenged him. Some might even call him generous. Whatever Al Capone was, there was one type of person that he believed to be truely evil. In the words of Capone, "There's one thing worse than a crook, I think...and that's a crooked man in a big political job. A man who pretends he is enforcing the law and is really making dough by breaking it. Even a self-respecting hoodlum hasn't any use for that kind of fella..he buys them like he'd buy any other article necessary to his trade. But he hates them in his heart," (Blumenthal 102).
He came up from almost nothing in a poor immigrant home of Italian decent. His mother and father were working class citizens. Capone began using the Italian heritage at a young age with a slight twist of dastardly aggressiveness. Being kicked out of school at an early age from assault of a teacher then joining a gang was the future for Capone. Torrio left all his work in the hands of Capone, and Al did not disappoint. He was successful in making money. Prohibition alcohol, gambling, prostitution, speakeasy’s, and hits were just a few tactics of his reign in Chicago during the roaring twenties. With his attitude and ability to practically decide who will win elections made him so fearful, and if you ever crossed him you were due to payment for ticking him off. Valentine’s Day and the small-thug are just two examples of the raw decisions of Capone to commit murder. There is no possible answer to the amount of killings Capone is responsible for. Al Capone was finally caught after all the chaos and killing in 1931 where he would serve in Alcatraz and in Baltimore until returning to Miami where he would dance with the devil one last time. The notorious Al Capone never died in Chicago as the Chiraq still ran wild. Al Capone is one of Americas most famous gangsters from the prohibition era and will rest knowing that he is a symbol for modern destruction of law and order
Al Capone, America’s most prominent Mafia figure in the 1920’s, also known as “Scarface” for a scar running down his left cheek. Capone didn’t hide in the shadows like most figures in such a shady occupation. He didn’t shy away from the camera, more like he welcomed it, and aimed to be seen by the public as a respectable businessman and a pillar of the community. Surprisingly, Capone wasn’t from a distinctly poor community, his father earned a living as a barber. Capone was introduced to the gang life by a friend and from there it all went downhill and into the life of a gangster.
Al Capone owned all sorts of businesses that gave oppurtinties to control his criminal activities with bootlegging and etc. Al's huge production and demand for alcohol pushed for alcohols legalization in what we have today where its commercialized and legal everywhere. These businesses of Al's helped fund the activities and the crime sprees that involved his crime organization. With the power and wealth Al had, he was able to further improve the crimes and organizations. These techniques of power and wealth are also used in gangs today and have been a reliable way for the gangs to control and commit crimes undetected. With the techniques used by Al to keep his criminal organization surviving, it also brought the ability for gangs to survive today also. His effects go all the way with legalization of marijauna, the same exact thing that happened with alcohol is happening with marijauna and possibly more drugs in the future. Big time Kingpins now requonize the importance of supply and demand with the abuse of money and power Al gained from it. Al effected the future of organized crime organizations and abundance of illegal drugs into the United States
In the roaring twenties, the life of organized crimes was at its peak. What was the greatest mob hit ever pulled off in history? Well I'll tell you. It all happened on Valentines Day, the morning of February 14th, 1929. This incident was call, "The St. Valentines Day Massacre". The man behind this infamous crime was none other than, the infamous Al "Scarface" Capone. Al Capone was the all time greatest mobster of all time. The idea of organized crime fascinates me in so many ways. Capone was the only person to have pulled off such a crime. Al Capone was top gangster in Chicago and was one of the greatest members of the Italian Mafia and George "Bugs" Moran was the leader of the Irish/German mafia and he was the main target behind this hit. He targeted Capone because Al Capones had a bounty on his head, $60,000,000, and found George Moran as a threat. George was Capone's biggest threat of all. He needed to take him out quickly. (Al Capone, True Crime Story). Writing this paper will let me learn a lot more about this massacre. There is one question I would like answered, "Why hadn't Moran's crew made an attempt to fight back?" (Al Capone, True Crime Story). Moran's men had a long history of being violent with others. This is one question that we will never know. My most used source on this essay will be internet information and a book. I feel these sources will give me the most amount of information. Using a magazine will too but it was very hard to find a 20's magazine article.
