Argumentative Essay - Survival of the Fittest INTRODUCTION The topic of the prompt is about what is a survivor. It’s also about how it means to be one in difficult circumstances. For example the story “Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Carroll is an island where humans are hunted like animals. In the short story there are many examples of a survivor or someone who is to be gallant, lucky, and selfish. FIRST REASON FROM THESIS Being gallant is the first characteristic of being a survivor. For an example of gallant is on page 73. It says “I wish to leave this island at once….” “we will hunt- you and I.”. My explanation for my quoted evidence is that it shows how brave he is. He takes general zaroff challenge, even though he is taking a risk of his own life. The reason being is he cannot leave the island because General Zaroff thinks he will tell the secret of the way he hunts. So if he wants to leave, Rainsford and general Zaroff must go against each other. A second point to this is when Rainsford says, “ And if I win-” “began Rainsford huskily. This in fact, shows that Rainsford is brave because he sounds ready to take the challenge and beat him at his own game. SECOND REASON FROM THESIS …show more content…
What I mean by this is that the story confirms that on page 75 it says , “Then he turned his back on the tree and walked carelessly away, back along the trail he had come.”. This surely shows that Rainsford got lucky because even though they are to hunt each other, General Zaroff seen Rainsford in the tree and he did not tend to end his life with the pistol that he had in his hands, he just walked away. Another statement from the story is towards the end and it states, “I am still a beast at bay.” this shows that he is lucky to still be standing alive and not dead because towards the last paragraph of the story he kills his enemy and Rainsford gets the bed for
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as crazy, Fearless, and Playful. General Zaroff is shown to be crazy in the story when he traps people on his island and then hunt them. “No animal had a chance with me anymore”(. This quote shows that Rainsford is crazy because during this part, he is hunting real living humans. During the story, General Zaroff is also Fearless. He shows that he is when he is hunting Rainsford and he knows he is in the tree but doesn't kill him because he wants a better fight. “His eyes stopped before they got to the limb where Rainsford laid and he smiled”. General Zaroff shows that he is fearless during this scene because he could get killed if he lets him live for a better fight but
John, the gambler, is an extremely courageous person. He has proven this by a number of actions in this story. First of all he shows tons of courage by not getting scared when the travelers and him get snowed in. If it where me I probably would have run off like Uncle Billy did. Another example of when Mr. Oakhurst showed courage was when he kicked Uncle Billy to stop him from laughing. Most people would have just told him to stop laughing. But not Mr. Oakhurst, he just gave him a swift kick in the stomach. That to me shows the utmost courage in the world.
After falling off his ship and forced to swim to a mysterious island, Rainsford is faced with a challenge. General Zaroff traps him in a “game” that requires Rainsford to use his skills to survive. He is hunted for three days; where he was chased, tracked down, and shot at. General Zaroff led the hunt to try to kill Rainsford. General was equipped with more firepower and help from his henchman and dogs. But even with his much greater opponent, he was able to survive. Rainsford used his many skills to defeat and kill his enemy. He used quick wit to make traps that would slow Zaroff and kill his dogs and henchman. Then he used his intelligence to escape Zaroff by swimming away, but sneaking back into his own mansion.
In Orson Scott Cards Ender’s game, the main character Ender does not have a normal childhood compared to other children. He is destined for a hard life ahead of him from the moment he was born. Through Ender and the characters around him Card draws us a picture about the world around us. One’s past does not shape their future or the kind of person they will be. A different choice can be made at any time.
Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. These books are very similar in the way that bravery is displayed through the characters in an uncommon way. Firstly, an example of bravery
He was resourceful when creating a trap for his hunter out of the nature around him. Rainsford could think on his feet when he made the quick decision to jump off the cliff and into the ocean. Finally, he used his good eye to tell what happened in the forest when he first arrived on Ship Trap Island. When Rainsford went into survival mode he was able to use these traits and many more to stay alive. This shows that when put into a life or death situation the body will use it survival skills to keep itself
Courageousness may seem to be measured by the people look on the outside. They look brave, heroic, and have some luck. Now, if someone looked on the inside of that person what would they see. Would they see a mentally strong person with high values in what they believe. On the opposition, the person might find out how scared, mean, and vulnerable they are. Courageousness is how little a person's values are affected when opposition and suffering happen in life. Also, doing things that they fear doing to boost their confidence and defeat their fears, this is courage. In A Separate Peace, The character Finny, who is bright and looking like he is brave all the time might seem to be the obvious candidate for being more courageous than Gene. Gene, who has little bravery an is weak. Gene though is actually the more courageous one because of his willingness to fight for his values and stand up in the face of opposition.
Rainsford was forced to choose between life and death by Zaroff. Zaroff tells Rainsford that he hunts people as a type of wild game and takes them hunting first then gives them a few survival things and have to survive for three days in order to win.
As their journeys progress, each man is forced to overcome certain obstacles and hardships. At the end
Facing hardships, problems, or obstacles shouldn’t discourage one from completing their task or job. Many of authors usually put their characters through tough complications to show the reader that no matter what happens; anyone could pull through. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, the main character Mr. Rainsford gets stranded on an eerie island with a bad reputation. He meets General Zaroff and gets thrown into a huge hunting game, where his life is on the line. In the end, he wins the game and will continue to hunt animals, but not people, as the general once did. He will continue to hunt because one, hunting means everything to him. Two, he will not continue the general’s crazy ways, and resort back to the legal and non-dangerous to other humans sport. Third, he feels powerful when he becomes the hunter and not the hunted. Giving up hunting would be like giving up his life, so just because of a minor block he had to overcome, he will not give up hunting.
In conclusion Rainsford was only protecting himself and the people around him. So yes, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. The quote "character is what you are in the dark" relates to Rainsford because if he hadn’t gotten hunted he never would have felt the fear nor anger to Kill General Zaroff, which needed to be
Survival is a necessity that individual needs to know and it needs to be done daily to ensure that humans are able to live on. There are many people in the world that are living well off, yet many people suffer from deadly diseases, food, and the impact from the war. In the following literature, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, The Kite Runner by Khald Hosseini, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant all show that survival is a key element. Survival is significant for us as human beings; it would is shown differently in the four literatures.

Rainsford woke up and stretched his arms. He sat up on the bed, swung his feet over the bedside, and stood up. He looked around trying to comprehend where he was and then realized he was in Zaroff's room. Rainsford walked around a little and then heard a loud noise come from the house. It sounded like someone was screaming in terror and then he heard a loud bang and glass shattering to the floor. Rainford was frightened by the sounds but decided he needed to take a look anyway, bringing his knife along with him in case he needed it.
