“Man is a moral being, only because he lives in society. Let all social life disappear and morality will disappear with it” – Emile Durkheim The statement that has been put forward by Emile Durkheim is valid in many ways, and I do believe it is agreeable. A person’s character or the guidelines that lead him through life are impacted by society. Not only are we put on a certain path by society, but we are set out to achieve the perception of what is truly right. Also 'right' can be objectified in many ways, yet that which separates moral from immoral is society itself. Without it we will never know how to deal with life’s encounters. At a very young age we decide to follow a set of rules that have been put forward by the people around us, whether it is our parents, teachers or even a complete stranger. If we are to co-exist with each and every other person that we come across we will have to maintain our morals. Some may say that without society that our life might not be so different, as we become who we want to be besides the fact that we are not surrounded by anyone to guide us. As humans, we require a specific form of conduct or at least that is what is expected of us. We crave towards social acceptance. The minute we do something in disregard to what we are meant to do, we will surely be labelled as an outcast. Society keeps us from being isolated also it builds up our character. It may not always be right, but whether we like it or not society does make us or break us. Several social changes have impacted our society as well; some of the more elaborate changes that have taken place include media, religion, education, social relationships, parenting styles and economic instability. Social relationships and parental styles have... ... middle of paper ... ...more self- aware of situations; also they fight for what they believe in. There are now more educated people, and more students especially women have started pursuing careers that were not available to them before. Surely, these changes have impacted our moral value system. It is hard to say whether if there have been more positive outcomes than negative. Yet these changes have changed the society’s beliefs on what is right and wrong even with the existence of formally created values. References Aronson E., Wilson T. D. & Akert R. M. (2007). Initially, The book “The Moral Arch” by Michael Shermer talks about as technology advances that we all become more moral to each other. I agree that as we become more technological, we become more moral in majority life, especially when it comes to capital punishment, violent crimes, religion, freedom, and democracy. We can see it through our history during the industrial revolution era, and through our generation today. Science will continue to make us more moral about our daily activities.
In Western society and culture, religion and morality have often intertwined and they have reflected their values onto each other. Today it is sometimes impossible to make a distinction between the two, since their influence has transcended generations. In modern Western culture, religion and society preach conformity. In order to be a “good” person, one must conform to the values imposed by the church1 and state.
With all that said, agreeing with William Golding is most logical. Humans possess evil in them but society, rules, laws, orders, and morals aids individuals to avoid corruption. Without the law, it is most likely that individuals will do selfish things and become corrupt rather than transform into an ideal person with the need of only to survive. Golding’s Lord of the Flies is an extreme but great representation of the human nature.
Participants were not under any explicit demand to conform, as they received no physical or verbal coercion to do so. The specific hypothesis centered on the idea, “if group pressure can play influence and effect individuals perception, decision and attitudes”. The independent variable will be “Procedure”, and the dependent variable is the “level of conformity did change”.

shared the same beliefs as everyone else, but they had to perform the dirty work
When one thinks about morals, he or she often find himself in difficulty. It is a fact that morals are mostly passed from one generation to another. However, we all face challenges when trying to understand whether they are all accurate or not. To start with, Morals are those values that normally protect life and always respectful of the dual life value of individual and others. Therefore, Morals are those rules that normally govern actions that re wrong or right. We know that morals may be for all people in the society or individual beliefs in the society. Some of the great morals include freedom, charity, truth, honesty and patience and all of them have a common goal. It is a fact that when they function well in the society, they end up protecting and enhancing life. These morals need to be examined always to make sure that they are performing their mission of protecting life. As a matter of fact, morals are derived from the government and society, self and religion. When morals are derived from the government and society, they tend to change as the morals and laws of the society changes. An example of the changes is seen in the cases of marriage versus individuals living together. It is true that in the past generation, it was quite rare to see any couple living together without having any legal matrimonial ceremony. However, this
Albert Camus' quote reaches me in a meaningful way. I am going to analyze this quote by the sentence because each one carries significance in the way I interpret them. The first sentence, " Society proceeds sovereignly to eliminate the evil ones from her midst as if she were virtue itself." This seems to me

... is impossible for one to accommodate for all the desires of others throughout one's life. Asking from a person to give his all to everyone would be degrading to his or her moral identity. Yet, there should always be certain limit of consideration to the people we share our lives with, or even those we interact with on regular basis. Being settled in communities and societies creates a moral obligation on each person towards others. I believe that almost all moral theories fail at some point. Henceforth I think that one should rely on common sense morality, and evaluate each situation according to the limits and conditions governing it. In some situations egoism might be the most rational and moral doctrine to follow, yet in others one should be completely altruistic, so the matter becomes dependent on the moral agent for the evaluation of each situation separately.

The thought of society today can really boggle ones mind. There is a strict set of rules put in place that everyone has to follow, as well as authority that people look up to. Depending on the society, rules can dictate the morality of the people.
