Moral courage is something not everyone acts on, due to the consequence that may result on the decesion to do what is morally right. Edmund Burke states, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” In Art Spiegelman’s man graphic novel, Maus II, The Red Cross attend and those in need. In this case, they are providing a snack, coffee and piece of bread to the traveling prisoners. Without them, the chance of survival would have been even lower since Vladek and everyone else on the train with him had little no food. They were starving, dehydrated and on the verge of death. Vladek stated that, ‘“We didn’t remember even how bread looks, we were very happy”’ (Spiegelman 88). Even though Jews were being persecuted
Riva was forever grateful of all the magnificent friends she had and the unique treatment she received at Mittlesteine. While Riva was at Mittelsteine she got blood poisoning, and the doctor at the camp negotiated for Riva to be sent to a trained hospital where she was treated of her contamination. Riva was too fragile to work, so she instead worked at the first aid station for German soldiers rolling gauze pads into bundles. Riva also got additional helpings of food (mashed potatoes and vegetables) that was sneaked in for her by a nurse, and the nurse let her have a hot bath for the first time since she left her home. Riva also had many friends in the Łódź Ghetto that looked out for her well being such as Mr. and Mrs. Berkenwald, who acted as Riva and her brother’s parents. They would save their servings of food, wood, and water for the kids because they knew they were vital for their daily life.
The Killer Angel The Battle of Gettysburg fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania from July 1 to July 3, 1863, is considered the bloodiest battle in American history. It’s also considered the most important battle that took place during the American Civil war, because after the Battle of Gettysburg the south never really recovers, resulting in them to never won another major battle the rest of the war. Well behind every great battle there is a great leader, whether it’s one that brings utter chaos or one that sincerely wants a change. In the novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, a historical fictional story of the battle of Gettysburg
Elie’s father sacrificed his bread ration as a result of giving it to Elie. Elie’s father recognized his son’s hunger and desperation for food, and choose to put aside his own to ease his son’s. “I was dreadfully hungry and swallowed my ration on the spot… and seeing… that there was nothing left of my ration, he did not even begin his own. “Personally, I’m not hungry,” he said” (Wiesel 29). Elie’s father also exhibited empathy to a Jew named Meir Katz, during the ride to Buchenwald. Meir Katz had pried an unknown attacker off of Elie during the night, and the next day seemed to give up hope. “ “Chlomo, I’m getting weak. I’m losing my strength . i can’t hold on…”(Wiesel 68). Nevertheless, Elie’s father tried to revitalize Meir Katz’s dying hope. “ “Don’t let yourself go under… You must resist. Don’t lose faith in yourself.” ” (Wiesel 68). Elie’s father demonstrated kindness in attempting to motivate Meir Katz, and proffering his bread ration to
Though beaten down, the prisoners had creative ways of coping with their confinement and of sustaining themselves, such as giving gifts to one another, and by praying. For instance, the narrator states, “My father had a present for me: a half ration of bread, bartered for something he had found at the depot, a piece of rubber that could be used to repair a shoe” (Wiesel 114 - 117). To put in other words, Wiesel’s father provided him a gift of bread and a piece of rubber that could be used to repair a shoe. This is significant, as the quote illustrates a creative way that prisoners cope with their confinement and of sustaining themselves by allowing themselves and others to enjoy giving and receiving gifts. In addition, another example would
These were the actions taken before Rose of Sharon helps the starving stranger in the barn by feeding him her breast milk. Even though the Joads have never met this man, they know what it is like to be hungry and to suffer. Therefore, Rose of Sharon makes a huge sacrifice to help someone in need.
I chose this passage because it amazes me that after all they had suffered, after all the unnecessary hardships the Nazis made them suffer, no one had a though of revenge.
When Elie learns that the dentist has been murdered and his gold crown is safe for another day, his thoughts immediately turn to the possibility that he can trade the gold for food. "The bread, the soup - those were my whole life. I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even less: a famished stomach. The stomach alone was measuring time." (Wiesel, 52). As the conditions Elie was subjected to start to take a toll on his body, he becomes less human and more animal. Without basic necessities it was impossible for him to be concerned with maintaining a positive mindset, all that mattered was having a surviving body, not necessarily a surviving soul. When German enemies bombed a nearby area, the concentration camp went on lock down. Two cauldrons of hot soup were left unattended, easily in view of all the prisoners. Elie recounts the event, saying “poor hero committing suicide for a ration or two or more of soup…” (Wiesel, 59). Although everyone knew that the man would be shot for leaving his block, hunger and primal instincts led him to abandon all rational. First and foremost, humans are animals, and animals want to survive. When most freedoms are taken away the focus shifts back to these animalist rationales and we abandon the part of us that makes us human. Once the camp has been liberated, Elie
“Whosoever saves a single life, saves an entire universe,” is the quote that is engraved on every heroic medal handed out by an organization called the Yad Vashem. But this is not just any ordinary medal; it is called The Medal of the Righteous. The Medal of the Righteous is a medal handed out by Yad Vashem in Israel to the courageous people who put their lives on the line to save a Jewish person or at least help them, during the Holocaust. There have been a total of 25,271 medals awarded. But why were these rescuers jeopardize their own safety? All of these Righteous helped the Jewish for a number of reasons: they became aware of the dangerous situation for the Jews, they loved and/or respected the Jews, or they were called by their profession

Who would imagine, George C. Wallace an American hero. Strong, courageous, noble and thoughtful are a few words used to describe a hero. Merriam-Webster (2014) dictionary defines a hero as a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities. Among several historical and controversial leaders, George Wallace and Gilgamesh are considered great heroes. However through their individual journeys they both learned how to humble themselves for the greater good of their society.
The reason he gave him the spoon and knife is that he thought he wouldn’t make it through the selection. It was because his ad was not as strong as he was before. He thought he couldn’t do it anymore. But his son told him he could make it through the selection and come out and be with him. His father that he insisted that he take the spoon and knife. His father came back and passed the selection so his son gave him all of his stuff back. The reason it was such a good inheritance was because if your first spoon and knife got stolen you would have another back up pair. His father also wanted to give him his bowl. His father really thought he wouldn’t make it out of the selection so he gave his son his bowl also. It was such a good gift at Auschwitz
I find the book A Lesson Before Dying paired with the theme heroism to be very conflicting because while there are aspects of that in the book I do not find it to be the main theme. Becoming a man does not mean that you are becoming a hero or even helping someone come to that point does not make you a hero. That makes you a decent human being and a friend. The Reverend states, “ When you act educated, I’ll call you Grant. I’ll even call you Grant, when you act like a man,” (pg.216). The Reverend even goes on telling Grant that he knows nothing about his own people. The Reverend is seen as a hero by his community and he sees them as his people, his friends, or maybe even family. This is a trait that I see a lot of “heroes” have. The people
One can easily be caught up in high action movies, such as Batman, Avatar, or Iron Man. Many children want to be like the heroes in these movies. They dress up to look like them on Halloween. Some even sleep in their favorite hero’s outfit. Unfortunately, today's society has lost the actual meaning of heroism. In an essay titled Hollywood’s Hero Deficit, by James Bowman, the author laments over the loss of genuine heroism. Bowman states that: “Heroism can continue to exist only on a plane far removed from the daily lives of the audience.” True heroes are not violent warriors. They try to do what is right. Heroes, like Odysseus, have a noble quest: to get home. Heroes are clever, not contentious. Today’s view of ‘Heroism’ can only exist in fairy tales, for todays heroes only show bravery through violence. Even worse, these acts of bravery bring happiness to the hero. The pure heroism that comes from moral victories has been missing in today's society for several decades, and has impoverished our society..
2 years later they found themselves in Auschwitz, the most famous nazi death camp. You can see how he was wrong. When he was first transferred there, he learned how hungry you can get. Soup, bread, and margarine was all they had to eat every day. None of it was very good or filling at all. He asked himself, what would he not do for food.
When you think about a hero do you think of a superhero or a real life person? There are
