The cracking of the ice beneath his paws was thunderous, a rolling brontide shifting the very fabric of the world below and abruptly tearing apart the sanctity of peaceful disposition he'd once had. At once, MoonKit's reality changed. What began as a delightful outing across the sun tickled snow dissolved into the sickening lump of terror now burning its way through his stomach... the gentleness of snowfall and the coolness of ice against his pink pads now a hungry demon, reaching up to sink its chilled teeth into his legs. He turned, with reddish eyes flashing bright and pupils shrunken to pinpoints, and he called out sharply to the rest of the patrol he'd been shadowing throughout the morning. "BACK!" The water seemed thicker somehow, harder and harder for him to struggle against and MoonKit was...sinking. Slipping away from the glittering temptation of sunlight beyond his head.. Then, something sharp drove into the back of his neck, though he hadn't even the energy to flinch as it hooked in deep and hauled him upwards. The two warriors dragged him bodily from the hole he'd fallen through, soaked down to his marrow and violent coughs shaking through his tiny and chilled body. He could not remember later how they got home.. whether he was dragged there or managed to stumble between his two fellow cats somehow.. but he did remember afterwards. He remember the gentle and authoritative touch of the Medicine Cat. He remembered being warmed slowly, given herbs to chew, feeling the embers of life fanned within his chest. He remembered the attentive care of the cat's deliberate paws, relighting the flames of life back into the kit's chest an fanning its heat throughout his hungry soul. It seemed a miracle, and every time he opened his eyes it was to glimpse the Medicine cat haloed by starlight. MoonKit remembered thinking- If this is what a Medicine Cat can be, I want to
