At the same time: Snap-Whoosh-Growl-Snap-Whoosh-Growl! All the tragedies started happening the same day I asked Eddie bout workin’ as a stenographer. I couldn’t understand why Eddie didn’t want me to go to work. It was a great opportunity; I was chosen from the whole class. That must have meant that I was da best student, I couldn’t have passed out that offer. It meant
Ponyboy believes that Darry could easily be a Soc because Darry has values that was similar to ones of a Soc. Darrel is his real name, Darry being a nickname. One of the values was being intelligent, it said on text 141: “he was proud of being smart too.” Not to mention, he is the oldest of the Curtis brothers, being 20 years old, he takes care of the household chores, such as cooking, cleaning, and this is shown to be true because he is the parental figure for the younger brothers.
When Ponyboy fell asleep in the parking lot, Darry was up all night waiting for him to come back home (pg 49). “Darry was in the armchair under the lamp, reading the newspaper.” “Well, it’s two in the morning, kiddo”
He thought this because Darry always either yelled at him or ignored him. “It was my house as much as Darry’s, and if he wanted to pretend I wasn’t alive, that was just fine with me” (Ch. 3 Pg. 52). This shows that Ponyboy thought Darry only loved Sodapop. Furthermore, this also illustrated that Pony misunderstood Darry’s thinking, when in reality he only yelled at him because he cared about him. Pony also thinks that Darry doesn’t care for him and thinks that he is annoying. “He’s as hard as a rock and about as human… he thinks i’m a pain in the neck. He likes Soda-everybody likes Soda- but he can’t stand me”(Ch. 3, Pg. 42). This shows that Pony thinks he is unloved, but he is loved more than he could ever imagine. Moreover, this shows that Sodapop might be Darry’s favorite, but Darry gets more concerned about Pony, and worries about him more and feels that he must reprimand Pony to keep him safe. Ponyboy always misunderstood Darry’s way of keeping him safe and out of
Ponyboy loves his hair because it took him a long time to grow it out, it is an important part of his identity, and it is the only thing he truly has. First Ponyboy snaps at Johnny and says “It took me a long time to get that hair just the way I wanted it.” (73). This means that it will take a long time for his hair to grow back and for the bleach to grow out; Ponyboy knows this and is saddened by his loss. Next Ponyboy thinks “Our hair labeled us greasers, too- it was our trademark. The one thing we were proud of.” (71). This quote tells us many things about Ponyboy and Johnny, for example “The one thing we were proud of.”; tells us quite literally that he's proud of his hair. Another fragment of this quote, “Our hair labeled us greasers,
Randy brings Ponyboy over to his car and asks him to just chat with him for a few seconds.Randy asked Ponyboy why he saved those children and that he would never do that but he would also never expect a greaser to save the kids too.Ponyboy then explained to him that it wasn’t a Greaser or Soc issue it was the decision was on the dependent individual. Randy then told Ponyboy he didn’t and wasn’t going to fight in the rumble that night it wouldn’t solve anything, and no one would really win. As Ponyboy gets out of the car Randy says “Thanks Greaser” pauses and then says “Look I didn't mean that,I meant, thanks kid.” Ponyboy then replies with “My name's Ponyboy...nice talkin’ to you Randy”. Ponyboy realized that , "Socs are just guys after all. Things are rough all over, but it was better that way. That way you could tell the other guy was human too."
Ponyboy became a better person as the book went on especially because in the beginning he was always accused of having no common sense and being different from the other greasers. Ponyboy had rough times throughout the book, but the way he overcame them made him the accepting, selfless and gold person he becomes by the end.
We’re headed down to Texas with the sole purpose of seeing an armadillo. It was the final thing my dad asked me to be do before he died and when we found out the news, we packed everything into boxes and stuffed it in the car. We quit our jobs and sold the house to the greedy business who has been trying to put a mall where it is for months. The next stop was the bank, where everything was emptied from our account and put into our wallets and then tupperware from the car when we ran out of room. And, now, we’re headed down to Texas in a 1983 Chevy Camaro with everything we owned sitting in the trunk and no thoughts of consequences about leaving.
A year ago I left ______I started going to an amazing school and met a whole plethora of wonderful, cute people. I made new, lovely friends that are some of the best people I’ve ever met. One person stood out from the rest, though. This ginger boy with the disposition of a golden retriever and a smile that I swear could make flowers grow. Of course I didn’t realize it at the time, but he’s the boy I would come to fall in love with. Now this boy—he is the biggest goofball I have ever met, but he’s the goofball that stole my heart, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
