Monogamy is unnatural and people who aren’t monogamous are being labeled as an outcast in society. Monogamy is not a biologically appropriate sexual system for humans. As a result, this central principle of monogamy has led to the alarmingly high divorce rates and cases of adultery. To emphasize this further, people shouldn’t think of polygamy as taboo in society. Polygamy should be legalized because it is natural and would allow for individual rights and freedoms. Even people who are serial monogamous would probably agree that everyone should have the right to marriage. With the Supreme Court case of Griswold v. Connecticut, the overall legal issue was establishing the basis for the right to privacy with respect to intimate practices. If the …show more content…
It is important to realize that monogamy is unnatural and not a biologically appropriate sexual system for humans. As a result, this central principle of monogamy has led to the alarmingly high divorce rates and cases of adultery. About 90% of birds were thought to be monogamous. Analysis of avian DNA indicates that many nestlings’ fathers aren't their biological fathers. Only 3% to 5% of all mammal species on Earth practice any form of monogamy. This information proves that monogamy is rare amongst animals species. No mammal was proven to be truly monogamous, so it’s an unethical expectation of humans. 3% to 4% of currently married people in the United States have a sexual partner besides their spouse in a given year. About 15% to 18% of ever-married people have had a sexual partner other than their spouse while married. People are inclined to cheat even though it is perceived as morally wrong. The question is always asked “why be in a relationship if you are going to cheat on the one you love?” It's because it's in human nature. The problem is that people who choose to be polygamous are outcasted as much as people who choose to be monogamous and cheat. The reason why there's high divorce rates and cheating is because it's not in human nature to be with one person forever. Polygamy should be legalized because it’s natural and it promotes individual freedoms. People should have the right to marry who ever they want and to how many people they want. Marriage is a factitious concept and not practice within nature. So, it shouldn't be forced into human civilization and be regulated by the
Throughout the second half of this semester, dual relationships have been emphasized as one of the most frequently encountered ethical dilemmas faced by behavior analysts in the field today. According to the class lectures, assigned text, and other articles that we have read, this is due to the fact that we interact with our clients and those caring for them in their natural settings. As a result, those we provide services to, and interact with, are in the places in which they feel the most comfortable, their homes or regular classrooms. This is in stark contrast to a formal office setting, which projects an atmosphere with both expected standards of acceptable behavior, and clear boundaries between client and the service provider. In an effort
Polygamy is not something many Americans are accustomed to. Western culture teaches that monogamy, as opposed to polygamy, is the proper, accepted form of marriage. Western culture places that morality into it's people, often from youth.
The article Breaking the Cycle Mother, Daughter Find It Can Be Difficult to Leave Polygamy behind Polygamy: It 's Tough to Break the Cycle by Joan O 'Brien is about a mother’s experience leaving a polygamous marriage. This mother, Betsy Barlow of Salt Lake City also inspired her daughter, Ellen to do the same thing. It is explained that Mrs. Barlow felt that being a part of a polygamous marriage was defeating for women and herself. O’Brien states, “Barlow believes that in practice, polygamy ``suppresses ' ' women”. Most women would drop out of High school to raise children for the one husband and Mrs. Barlow was taught that this was the only way to reach the celestial kingdom. Her parents taught her this and she openly admits to teaching her
...jective as a theoretical matter. Furthermore, there are current issues with the classification of sexual orientation, as it presently exists, mostly with efforts to essentialize the class. These issues could be enhanced, at least to some degree, by introducing the classification to other kinds of sexual preferences, thus extending the attention and possibly reducing the theoretical load that attraction to one sex or the other or both is projected to bring. The significant bias that polyamorists face along with other nonmonogamists are both loaded by an establishing value of discrimination which encourage the move to enlarge the description of polyamory being as part of sexual orientation. “It is the hope that everyone will take this opportunity to question monogamy ‘as a preference’ or ‘choice’… and to do the intellectual and emotional work that follows.” (Emens 82)
In view of these facts, it is clear that divorce and polygamy both belong to the category of situations that deviate from the ideal marriage. With that in mind, Christians should not be quick to judge polygamy, especially while ignoring divorce. Evidently, it takes more courage, consumes more energy, and involves more responsibility to be in a polygamous relationship than to divorce and remarry.

Infidelity is depicted as an extremely negative thing in the United States, and is often blamed for trust issues, psychologically damaging the spouse and their children, tearing apart marriages and families and more. People who commit adultery are often shamed and told how wrong what they did is and what a terrible person they are for doing it. According to the Journal of Martial and Family by the Associated Press, however, 41% of “marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional.” Clearly, while infidelity is generally viewed negative by society, many people either decide that it is not as negative as it is portrayed, or do not care and do it anyway. “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “The Storm” both go against the typical view of adultery being a negative thing in a relationship by showing that it can actually have a beneficial outcome and leave some, if not all people happier.
Despite these notable numbers, polyamory remains misunderstood and much maligned. Largely due to our unwarranted and yet seemingly unwavering faith in the sanctity of monogamy, polygamists often feel tremendous pressure to hide their private lives, for fear of losing the respect of friends and family. By creating a stigma around having multiple partners, we as a society are committing nothing less than discrimination. Despite all of the arguments that its opponents have hurled against the lifestyle, p...
There was a time when more smart-conscious decisions were made relating to sexual relationships. In particular, sexual relationships within a marriage. However, times have changed. The pillars that hold up our individual sexual values have started to crumble. It is estimated that two out of three marriages fail due to infidelity. This is a scary statistic considering that people believe a marriage can survive infidelity. This brings us to our first myth: Everyone has affairs.
Polygamy is becoming a part of the question, Is this is an alternative lifestyle that should be allowed? There are television shows and criminal cases about polygamy ( Kiesbye). Some common tv shows about polygamy are Sister Wives and Big Love. Since this is a new upcoming type of marriage the tv shows are showing all the good parts about polygamy ,or “fluffing” it up, rather than show any negatives aspects about it. There are multiple things associated with polygamy not just the side where all the family members are happy. There is a darker side to polygamy that the media has not been showng. Polygamy is deleterious to marriage and society because women are treated horribly unequally and horribly during marriage, children are abused, and
In the United States, marriage is a commitment two people make for the rest of their lives. The average American marriage lasts seven years. Well over half of all marriages end in divorce (Francouer, 72). Statistics in the infidelity have rose fifty percent since the 1970s and is rising all the time. The divorce count in this country is now up to one out of every three-marriage end in divorce. Serial polygamy is a common lifestyle for those who are divorced and then become remarried. The relationship between a husband and wife should be sacred and trustworthy. Without the trust and honesty there is no marriage. Monogamy is the loving, sharing, and devoting one's self to another person for the rest of their life. Monogamy should be the most important aspect in a marriage.
So it seems that it is not simply being married that offers benefits and marital stability, but it is what people do in marriage that offers benefits and maintains the marriage (actively doing behaviors to maintain the marriage–being committed beyond being satisfied). Marital satisfaction being a catalyst for marital stability is beneficial to the extent that marital satisfaction does not decline, but this is problematic considering marital satisfaction is inconsistent throughout marriage. It is vital then to examine commitment and marriage, as commitment seems to be a more reliable factor that buffers against divorce and supports marital stability according to the literature.
Throughout the history of the world, polygamy has played an integral part of the religious practices of various societies. For example, anciently, Jews, Muslims, Christians, and other religions have practiced polygamy. Today in America many people from many different cultures and spiritual backgrounds co-exist, including some who feel that God would have them marry more than one person at a time, all guaranteed, by the Constitution, the right to believe and worship as they see fit. Considering the diverse religious climate in America, polygamy, as a religious practice, must be protected under the first amendment to the Constitution.
Equality is meant to be used for religious view, every person on this earth, and everything created. Let people be who they are and be with who they love, whether it is just one or multiple people. It would not affect society and children negatively if people did not act negatively towards it. After this quick overview on the polygamist practice and viewing the different sides opposing and for the religion, it is hoped that there are better or more educated opinions on the subject. If people still think negatively towards the religion then that is fine, because the main purpose to this essay was to help better educate and form better justifications on the subject. Maybe this could be an eye-opener for most and possibly help people be more accepting of others who do not believe the same as they do.
Throughout most of my life I have gained friendships and relationships with others that have turned into long term, but others which only lasted a short while. The friendship that has greatly impacted my life significantly over the last eight years is someone who means so much to me. This meaningful friendship all started back when I was in middle school, which has grown stronger over the years. I met Brooke in middle school because we had some of the same classes and were in homeroom together. Our friendship developed quickly and lasted throughout our high school years. We became really close our Junior and Senior year of high school. But, maintaining our friendship hasn’t always been so easy. Today, we text and call each other on our free time, but I know I can count and rely on her when I need someone to talk too. I call her my second sister and vice versa. And when we go home on breaks we see one another as much as we can. The best part of our relationship is that if one is in need of advice or in need of a shoulder to cry on, we are always there for one another. Keeping in contact is very important in our relationship and communication has played a key role in our relationship.
